How to distribute mobile Internet from an Android phone via Wi-Fi. Enable and configure Wi-Fi distribution from an Android device

In this short instruction I will show you how you can share the Internet via Wi-Fi from a Samsung phone. I had the opportunity to write instructions using a smartphone as an example. Samsung Galaxy J5, with the new Android 7.0 Nougat already installed. The same as on Samsung Galaxy S8 and other models. I think this article will be relevant for a long time and will be useful to many. In fact, setting up the Hotspot and tethering feature on Android 7.0 is very simple, just like on other versions and devices. But many users still have questions about this function.

We will distribute Mobile Internet via Wi-Fi network to other devices. It will be possible to connect other smartphones, laptops, TVs and other devices. We will have a Samsung phone as a router. In the “Access point and modem” settings you can also distribute the Internet via Bluetooth and even via a USB cable. Via Bluetooth is not very relevant now, but via cable it might come in handy. For example, if you need Internet on a desktop computer that does not have . You can use your phone as a wired modem to access the Internet through your mobile operator.

Note! Since we will be distributing mobile Internet, I advise you to clarify the terms of your tariff plan. What is your megabyte limit and what is the fee over the limit. Devices connected to the hotspot may siphon all traffic and additional charges may apply.

Some operators block the distribution of the Internet to other devices. Therefore, there is an option that it may not be possible to share the Internet.

Let's start setting up the access point.

Internet distribution via Wi-Fi from a Samsung phone

Open the top curtain. If your mobile Internet is disabled, then turn on "Mobile data" and go to settings. In settings, open the "Connections" section.

Next, open the “Access point and modem” section. We turn on Wi-Fi distribution with the switch opposite the “Mobile access point” item. The status "Enabled" should appear. If you have Wi-Fi turned on, the phone will prompt you to turn it off.

If you noticed, there is an option to activate Bluetooth modem and USB modem.

Our Samsung is already giving away Wi-Fi network, to which we can connect our devices. By default, the smartphone itself sets the network name (AndroidAP) and password. To view and change them, as well as view the list of connected devices, just click on the “Mobile access point” item itself.

The network name and password can be changed if desired. Just click on them and change. The password must be at least 8 characters long and the network name must be in English letters.

I connected my Windows 10 laptop to the Wi-Fi network provided by the Samsung Galaxy J5. The device immediately appeared in the list of connected devices. If you click on it, you can see some information, or change the device name.

In my case, the Internet on the laptop is via samsung smartphone It worked immediately and without problems. In the screenshots above, you probably noticed that I only get 2G (EDGE). Of course, using such Internet on a computer is not very pleasant. But now there is very good 3G/4G coverage, and everything flies there. Even if you distribute the Internet to several devices at the same time.

If you plan to use the mobile hotspot function somewhere outdoors, then I advise you to take a power bank with you, since mobile Internet paired with an access point will very quickly drain the battery of your smartphone. I also advise you to disable this function when you do not need it. Well, keep an eye on your traffic consumption and the terms of your tariff plan. So as not to receive a “terrible” bill for mobile Internet later.

Leave all questions and suggestions in the comments. Best wishes!

If your phone is connected to the Internet, you can connect other devices to the network. This is an instruction about how to share Wi-Fi from an Android phone. You can access the Internet from a laptop, desktop computer, tablet or any other Wi-Fi-enabled device using a smartphone, turning it into a mobile hotspot. A few clicks in “Settings” and your phone will broadcast the Internet signal to other devices.

Before distribute Wi-Fi from your phone, it is worth considering some nuances:

  • You will be using your SIM card's mobile data. Budget tariff plans offer limited access to the Internet - from several tens to several hundred MB. You should not download large files, watch movies in high quality, stream video and transfer large amounts of data with this connection.
  • Some cellular operators block such a function as Internet distribution from a smartphone. If problems arise, contact the operator and clarify this issue.
  • Wi-Fi distribution with Andorid The battery drains a lot. Make sure you have a charger handy.

I will be using my smartphone based on Android 5.1.1. In other versions the actions are almost the same.

In Settings, in the first section “Connections”, you need to go to “Data Usage” and check the box next to “Mobile Data”. The same checkbox can be found in “Other networks” -> “Mobile networks”. Make sure you have available MB in your account.

We return to the settings menu and go to “Modem and access point”. There are 3 items in the menu that opens:

  • Mobile Hotspot
  • USB modem
  • Bluetooth modem.

The “USB modem” function allows distribute internet via USB cable. You can connect your phone to a laptop or computer without a Wi-Fi chip to gain access to the Internet. The “Bluetooth modem” works using a Bluetooth module; this is the slowest wireless connection. And for Wi-Fi distribution from phone click on the first item.

At the top, turn on the mobile hotspot by moving the slider to the right. Ready! All that remains is to configure this mini-router.

By clicking on the network name, you can restrict access by specifying only allowed devices. In the top right menu you can create a list of allowed devices, configure the point and timeout settings.

In the access point settings, you can change the SSID - the name that other devices see, or hide the device. Security settings allow you to set a password for the Wi-Fi network. Select WPA2 PSK security type, and enter a password of at least 8 characters. If you do not enter your password, it will be generated automatically. In the additional parameters you can change the signal broadcast channel, but it is better to leave everything as it is – Auto.

Timeout settings are designed to save phone resources. If no one connects to the created Wi-Fi network for the selected time, the hotspot automatically turns off.

On the main mobile hotspot settings screen, you will see if any device connects to the network. Fortunately, Android has a very friendly interface that is easy to understand. Minimum settings and maximum functionality.

Heading:

A modern telephone can perform a lot of different functions, thereby replacing a large number of other devices. For example, the telephone can replace the dot Wi-Fi access. To do this, you just need to set up Wi-Fi distribution from your phone to other devices.

How to share Wi-Fi from an Android phone

In order for you to open Android settings. This can be done by launching the Settings app from the list of all installed applications. You can also open settings using the top curtain or desktop icon.

After opening the settings, you need to go to the “Other networks” section. It should be noted that in your phone this section may have a slightly different name. If you cannot find this section, look through all the settings sections that are located next to Wi-Fi settings and Bluetooth.

Next, open the subsection called “Modem and access point.” Again, the name of this section may be slightly different on your device. It may be called “Modem”, “Modem Mode”, “Access Point Connection” or simply “Access Point”.

After this, you must activate the Portable Hotspot feature. To do this, move the switch to the “On” position.

Once your portable hotspot is activated, you will see a pop-up warning you to turn off Wi-Fi. In this window, click on the “Yes” button.

At this point, the setup is complete, now your phone distributes Wi-Fi. All you have to do is look at the password to access the Wi-Fi network created by your phone. To do this, open the “Portable Access Point” section.

After this, a window with information about the access point will open in front of you. Here you can view and change the access point name and password.

How to distribute Wi-Fi from an iOS phone

If you have an iPhone, then in order to set up Wi-Fi distribution you need to go into the settings and open the “Modem Mode” section. If this section is missing, this may mean that mobile Internet is not turned on or not configured on your phone.

In this section, you need to activate the “Modem Mode” function. To do this, move the switch to the on position.

In the same settings section, you can see the password that you need to use to connect to Wi-Fi.

This completes the iPhone setup. Now you can connect to the created Wi-Fi network.

How to distribute Wi-Fi from a phone on Windows Phone 8

If you have a phone based on the Windows Phone operating system, then in order to distribute Wi-Fi you need to open the “Settings” application.

After this, you need to open the “Internet Sharing” section.

This completes the Windows Phone setup. The Wi-Fi network is working and you can connect to it.

Android phones have an excellent ability to switch to modem mode and become an Internet source for other electronic devices. But you need to be able to do it.

Where to start distributing the Internet via phone?

First you need to set up the Internet on the phone itself, which we will later use as an Internet donor for other devices. Your mobile operator should provide you with the necessary settings.

To give your phone, which has Internet access, the right to share this opportunity with other devices, you need to go to the “settings” menu and activate “modem mode”.

You will also have to go through the “access point setup” stage. Here you will need to specify the network name, security type and password. The protection can be left as specified by default. The password must be 8 characters long. It is better that it includes numbers, letters and signs. After this, you will be offered 3 options to distribute the Internet.

Internet distribution via USB connection

Most likely, the necessary drivers are already in the phone itself or on the disk that you should have purchased along with the device. If the drivers are on the phone, then through the settings you need to select the mode for connecting the phone as a USB device.

After this, you can install the drivers on your computer. When the installation is complete, turn off USB mode and return to USB modem mode.

Internet distribution via Wi-Fi

In this way, both a computer and a telephone can be equipped with the Internet. But for this it is necessary that the receiving device be able to receive a Wi-Fi signal using a special receiver.

At this stage, a small incident may occur. The fact is that Android developers specified a standard access point name AndroidAP and a standard password 00000000. Not all subscribers change these parameters to their personal ones. Because of this, you can periodically connect to someone else’s access point.

Internet distribution via Bluetooth

This data transfer option can work with more modest amounts of information and over a shorter distance than Wi-Fi. The Internet that such a phone can distribute comes from its mobile operator.

In this way, the Internet is transferred only to a telephone device also equipped with Bluetooth. To do this, on the receiving device you need to activate the item in the settings called “Internet access”.

Internet distribution from the phone can be carried out different ways. It all depends on the capabilities of electronic devices that are the source and receiver of Internet communications.
