A. Ostrovsky is a playwright whose work contributed to the development of Russian national theater. A special layer of Ostrovsky’s dramaturgy is occupied by his observations of Moscow merchant life. Distinguished by their special realism, they acutely describe social types Russia at that time.

Plot:

What will the young beauty Agnia prefer: calculation or poor love? And what should the widow Daria Kruglova do: succumb to the temptation of wealth or give the right of choice to her daughter?

About the performance:

Music, as a “living text” of the performance, plays a special role in the decision of director Valery Persikov, helping to transport the viewer into the atmosphere of Zamoskvoretsk folk festivities. The grotesque play of the actors, which evokes laughter, is vividly combined in the production with ditties and “cruel romances” - songs “to the delight of one’s grief.”

Ostrovsky, in his characteristic manner, offers the characters of the play a serious choice between love and money. The performance is quite simple in form, but in depth and content it will compete with many other productions. Can money give true happiness? The play premiered on March 15, 2016. Over the three years of its run, the production has managed to firmly establish itself in the theater repertoire, so the play “It’s not all Shrovetide for the Cat” will continue to be actively staged in 2019.

The wealthy merchant Ermil Akhov is alternately played by Viktor Nizovoy and Dmitry Koznov, the image turned out to be powerful and colorful. The role of the clerk Ippolit went to Gleb Podgorodinsky, who was able to show the evolution of his hero that happens to him in the course of history. The wise mentor-mother Daria Kruglova is brilliantly played by Irina Zheryakova. A total of 12 actors take part in the production.

Director Vitaly Ivanov has been working at the Maly Theater since 1969. He staged many high-quality performances, including “Woe from Wit”, “Mad Money”, “Wolves and Sheep”, “Undergrown”.

The play “It’s not all Maslenitsa for cats” is considered one of the most elegant and fun works of A.N. Ostrovsky, however, the lightness of the form does not at all exclude the depth of the content, because this playwright is famous for his ability to talk jokingly about serious things.

The question of the power of money is an eternal question, and everyone answers it in their own way: the tyrant merchant, the frisky girl, the shy clerk, and the wise widow. Of course, this bright and dynamic story will not be complete without love affair, cunning plans... and ditties.

The Riga Russian Theater named after Mikhail Chekhov carefully preserves the traditions of the Russian theater school. One of the favorite authors in the RRT repertoire has always been and still remains Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky: 246 productions over 135 years. The play “It’s not all Maslenitsa for the cat,” one of the most elegant and cheerful comedies of this playwright, was first performed at RRT in 1897 and has since been staged 7 times. The current version of the play, directed by Igor Konyaev, is made and designed in the aesthetics and style of the “Ostrovsky Theater”, and the Riga audience highly appreciates this “very Russian” performance in spirit - colorful, light and full of humor. The play stars leading theater artists: Igor Chernyavsky, Galina Rossiyskaya, Alexey Korgin, as well as the oldest theater actress Lyudmila Golubeva, who first appeared on the dramatic stage in 1945, in the role of cook Malanya.

A number of his characters clearly wander from one play to another, only slightly changing characters and phrases. Oh, these sweet, simple stories from the life of Moscow in the 19th century, where everything always ends well to the great pleasure of the viewer! I love Ostrovsky with pure and unclouded love. In the wake of the great Russian writers and playwrights, ponderous and serious, he most brilliantly and masterfully wrote comedies, which have not left the Russian theater stage for 150 years.
“It’s not all Maslenitsa for the cat”, of course, is about marriage. A lonely mother and her daughter, being simpletons of an indeterminate social class, are faced with the most difficult existential choice of their entire lives - whether to give their daughter in marriage to an old but rich man or to give her to a young but poor man, who, to top off the confusion, also turn out to be his own uncle and nephew .
The play is great! Very funny and ironic. In addition, the topic does not lose relevance even today! Young girls looking for rich daddies, it turns out, is a sick trait not only of our time, the classics were also aware of the problem! Shamirov's production is also very good! With an absolute minimum of scenery (in the first act - only a sofa, in the second - a table from the underworld), the production turned out to be bright, focusing all attention exclusively on the actors, as Ostrovsky bequeathed. And here the audience is in for an unpleasant surprise. The main star of the production is Evgeny Steblov, firstly, he is 15 years older than his hero (a rich daddy), and secondly, he is already in very bad shape. Alas. His hands shake slightly, but very clearly, and in general, it is clear that the person is no longer playing, but finishing the game. I don't know, maybe he was sick, anyway good health He has a long life, but he never fits the role of a pragmatic and active merchant of 60 years old, who keeps everyone around him with a tight rein. The choice of a guy for the role of the nephew also raises some questions - one of the main roles in the film Boomer or Zhmurki would have suited him very well, but, in my opinion, such types simply did not exist in the mid-19th century. But the mother and daughter are simply brilliant! The height of charisma and drive! In those moments when they were left on stage alone or with minor characters- the performance was absolutely beautiful, and then Steblov came and destroyed everything, however, confirming the title with his appearance, so maybe this is just such a subtle directorial move?
Next season I will watch the same play in another production, with different actors, I really liked it. It is still running in Maly and Mayakovka.
