Where does Transcendental Meditation come from? What is transcendental meditation

The Transcendental Meditation technique is based on ancient yogic wisdom. Indian sages have been practicing meditation for thousands of years - various techniques are passed on from master to disciples from generation to generation. The most effective practices were initially available only to a very small select group.

Guru Dev(right) during the visit of Indian President Rajendra Prasad

The situation changed in 1953.

Before his death, the famous meditation master in Northern India, Brahmananda Saraswati, whom his students called Guru Dev, gave one of his students the task of not only preserving and maintaining the technique, but also disseminating it throughout the globe. This student successfully completed the mission entrusted to him and became known and revered as Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

MAHARISHI MAHESH YOGI

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was born on January 12, 1917 in India. He studied physics at Allahabad University and received his master's degree in 1940. After completing his studies, he started practicing yoga and meditation with Guru Dev.

“Transcendental Meditation opens the mind to the inexhaustible source of energy and mental capacity that lies deep within each of us” -
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

Maharishi began his first Transcendental Meditation tour in the Far East and then crossed the ocean in 1958, bringing Transcendental Meditation to the United States and Europe. Ten years later, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi became (who came to study with him in Rishikesh, India, in 1968), as well as for many other Western celebrities.

In retrospect, this was a period of massive cultural shift. Meditation in the West has become as commonplace as taking vitamins or doing aerobics.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi continued to work tirelessly - he traveled around the world, wrote books, certified TM teachers (more than 40,000 people), opened Transcendental Meditation centers and academic institutions. He died on February 5, 2008, and before his death he managed to make the teachings of Transcendental Meditation available in almost every corner of the world, touching the souls of millions of people.

Why should I do Transcendental Meditation?

Nobody says you HAVE to do it. This is not a belief system or ideology, so you can calmly weigh all the arguments without fear of making the “wrong” decision. Listed below are just some of the most well-known reasons why more than 6 million people around the world - from India to Peru, from Canada to Saudi Arabia - have learned the technique of Transcendental Meditation over the past 50 years.

HEALTH BENEFITS

Over the past 30 years, more than 350 rigorous scientific studies have been conducted by the best academic institutions to study the effects of Transcendental Meditation on humans. These research projects have confirmed a number of clear health benefits of Transcendental Meditation.

This question has many different points of view. However, the main conclusion is that Transcendental Meditation brings immediate and significant relief from the “disease of the 21st century” - stress.

Research has shown that Transcendental Meditation provides deep, profound relaxation and rest to the mind and body.

As a result, our minds and bodies stop overreacting to stressful situations. The stress on the heart, blood vessels, digestive system and other important organs is eliminated. We become less depressed and less sensitive. Sleep improves, and the number of causes that cause the development of various addictions, such as smoking, drinking alcohol and drugs, and overeating, is also reduced.

STUDYING SELF-AWARENESS

However, not all people take up Transcendental Meditation for the health benefits. Many people practice TM for completely different purposes - trying to study their own consciousness.

The area of self-awareness is difficult to measure using any external units of measurement. Some efforts that have been made in this area indicate that practicing Transcendental Meditation increases brain wave coherence. (One of the results of which is improved cognitive and analytical functioning - the brain works clearly and sharply, like a laser beam. Creativity also improves.)

Yet this gives us very little information about inner experience. The path of meditation leads a person to deeper areas of consciousness, bringing him to a level of peace and serenity, which allows him to realize the true essence of existence.

So, health and consciousness.

And yet, as is often the case with any generalizations, in this case there is a danger of oversimplification - omission of rich, eloquent details. Each person is unique, and so are his or her reasons for practicing Transcendental Meditation.

Technique: How difficult is it?

After you have to break your tongue the first few times you try to say the word “transcendental,” it is quite understandable that you will associate the Transcendental Meditation technique with some kind of extremely complex mental acrobatics.

In fact, this is very far from the truth.

Transcendental Meditation is probably the simplest and most natural technique among all other meditation techniques known to man. You simply sit down every morning and evening for 20 minutes, close your eyes and begin repeating the mantra.

“20 minutes in the bank, all day at the market” -Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

There are also no prerequisites required. Transcendental Meditation can be practiced by any adult - regardless of their health, lifestyle, socio-economic level, self-confidence, ethnicity or race, medical beliefs, level of job satisfaction, economic indicators... etc. All you need is a functioning brain.

(What about children? They can start meditating at age 10. Children under 10 can learn a special walking technique called Words of Wisdom.)

Likewise, most other meditative practices, transcendental meditation, were born in India. In a country that has become known to the whole world not only due to its unique culture, but also due to a large number of different teachings. After all, the goal of the Vedic tradition of India is enlightenment, which has been passed down from generation to generation for thousands of years. Each teacher, passing on the knowledge of his ancestors, led a search for personal enlightenment.

One such practice is transcendental meditation, which has won the hearts of millions. Knowledge that came into practice relatively recently, about 50 years ago, was presented by Maharishi. He represents the Vedic tradition. The technique of transcendental meditation helps a person to comprehend the experience and knowledge of higher states of consciousness. This practice is important and necessary for the modern world, especially now, when a person is at the extreme, critical points of his development.

Concept of Transcendental Meditation™

Transcendental meditation (translated from Latin means “going beyond thought”) is a natural, simple technique using mantras. Learning this technique is easy, and the effect appears after the first lessons. Practice for fifteen to twenty minutes, about twice a day, in a comfortable sitting position, with your eyes closed.

Transcendental meditation is a current polar to the course of thinking. A thought, when it arises, turns into a clearer form. It ultimately influences what we say and do. This is the external side of consciousness. Transcendental meditation is the opposite process. Through this practice the mind is directed inward to the subtlest stages of thinking and as a result reaches the source of thought. He is transported to the point of complete awakening, which is the foundation of consciousness.

Transcendental meditation is a technique that must be practiced systematically to focus attention within oneself in order to feel and know the deeper tiers, the tranquil levels of one's personal consciousness, until the mind reaches complete peace in the simplest state of human consciousness.

What is the TM technique?

The practice of transcendental meditation is not difficult at all. You need to sit comfortably on a chair and start pronouncing the mantra. In special classes, a person is given his own mantra, which he pronounces to himself and unconsciously concentrates on the sound. Constant and continuous pronunciation tires certain parts of the brain, which entails general inhibition. As a result, the practice leads to the fact that the body comes into a relaxed state, breathing slows down, consciousness dissipates and the mind plunges into primary consciousness.

Thoughts leave, and the body seems to fall into sleep, however, you should not fall asleep. Once you have achieved this state, you should stop repeating the mantra; as soon as thoughts begin to overwhelm you again, the process of pronouncing sounds must be resumed. Being in the primary state, a person receives energy from the Cosmic Consciousness, due to which he is cleared of “mental trash”.

Learning to meditate is not difficult; this technique does not require special clothing or equipment. Anyone can do it, regardless of their physical condition. You can practice this technique yourself at home and beyond. With experience, meditators learn to “turn off” all external factors and can practice even in a noisy place.

TM effect

Speaking about transcendental meditation, it is necessary to point out that regular practice contributes to:

  • Relaxation of human physiology and nervous system, deep rest. During 20 minutes of meditation, the brain rests in the same way as during 8-10 hours of sleep.
  • Effective resistance to stress, helps to get out of depression and tension.
  • Strengthening the nervous system, developing resistance to new stressful situations.
  • Rapid restoration of physical strength, increased vital energy.
  • Improving psycho-emotional state.
  • Normalization of blood pressure (high and low).
  • Increasing resistance to various diseases and promoting health.
  • Eliminate insomnia and other sleep disorders, improve natural biorhythms.
  • Unlocking creative abilities.
  • Development of mental abilities and the ability to make the right decision in a critical situation.
  • Quitting bad habits (smoking, drugs, alcohol).
  • Increasing personal effectiveness and self-esteem.

TM technique training

You need to learn this practice constantly. Accurate adherence to the stages of training ensures the greatest effectiveness from meditation. There are seven steps to learning transcendental meditation. The usual course standard includes two lectures on the principle of transcendental meditation and its beneficial results. A short individual interview, 1-1.5 hour lesson for individual mastery. On the following days, classes last approximately 90 minutes, which consist of the training itself. After this, you can start practicing this technique yourself at home. All that is needed for this is 15-20 minutes of practice in the morning and evening.

It is recommended to check the experience gained from time to time so that the program always gives maximum results. Although the technique of transcendental meditation takes only a few days to master, those interested can attend group meetings and in-depth lectures. Having mastered transcendental meditation once, a person can use it throughout his life.

Specifics of mantra selection and its meaning

Officially it is said that for each person the mantra is selected individually, as it allows you to relax and unwind as much as possible (you can also use it). The Maharishi states that the mantras used in transcendental meditation are aimed primarily at ordinary people and should not be used for cultic or mystical purposes.

According to tradition, no one is allowed to name their personal mantra; this condition is due to the division of the worlds into internal and external. The mantras themselves are not specifically intended for transcendental meditation, but are taken from Sanskrit sources used by many Hindus. Mantras must be selected according to the list, taking into account the age of the person at the moment when he turns to transcendental meditation. Having learned his mantra, a person adapts to it for some period. Controlled by the instructor, he pronounces these sounds out loud, then more and more quietly until it begins to sound only in his mind. After which he goes to practice.

In the table below you can choose a mantra for yourself depending on your age (they are suitable for both women and men). You select the one you need and mentally read it:

Age of entry into TM Mantra Age of entry into TM Mantra
4-10 ing (ING) 24-30 shiring
10-12 im (IM) 30-35 shirim (SHIRIM)
12-14 inga (INGA) 35-40 hiring (HIRING)
14-16 imma (IMMA) 40-45 hirim (HIRIM)
16-18 aing 45-50 kiring (KIRING)
18-20 aim (AYM) 50-55 kirim (KIRIM)
20-22 ainga (AINGA) 55-60 shyam (SHYAM)
22-24 aima (AYMA) 60- shyama (SHIAMA)

Practicing transcendental meditation reduces mortality rates among people with heart disease. This amazing fact was discovered by scientists from the Medical College of Wisconsin together with representatives of Maharishi University in the US state of Iowa. They conducted the first ever and long-term experiment. African Americans took part in the number of 201 people. Both men and women participated. They were given a choice: take up transcendental meditation or try to change their lifestyle. Thus, one part was engaged in practice, and the second attended lectures, made changes in nutrition and increased physical activity.

The experiment lasted for nine whole years. According to its results, the meditating group showed a 47% reduction in mortality, strokes and heart attacks. In addition, these people’s blood pressure dropped noticeably, and some individuals also got rid of psychological stress. Now doctors advise all patients and not only heart patients, but also those who have physical and emotional problems to practice transcendental meditation.

Contraindications

Since transcendental meditation belongs to the traditions of yoga, it has a number of contraindications for practicing independently:

  • psychoclinical diagnoses;
  • fear of performing transcendental meditation, as well as giving meaning to mantras;
  • extreme states of consciousness;
  • low level of intelligence: transcendental meditation is a practice that is performed independently and the meditator must know where to direct efforts and have the skill of reflection. If a person is convinced that he is right and always goes ahead, not taking into account the growth of problems in his life, then in the near future he will leave the canonical execution of the technique and will come to a sedentary hallucination, which, with deep relaxation, leads to the manifestation of symptoms of schizophrenia.

From this article you will learn:

What are the benefits of transcendental meditation

    How to do transcendental meditation

How does transcendental meditation affect different areas of life?

Transcendental meditation, despite its complicated name, is actually simple and effective. Anyone can do it, and you can do it absolutely anywhere and at any time, even during your lunch break. This technique takes little time, but the effect is amazing.

What is transcendental meditation

The birthplace of transcendental meditation, like most similar practices, is India. This country is known not only for its unique culture, but for its wide variety of teachings. The goal of the Vedic traditions of India was enlightenment, passed down from generation to generation for thousands of years. Teachers who passed on their knowledge to students ultimately sought their own personal enlightenment.

Transcendental meditation is a practice that has won the love of many people. The knowledge that entered this practice not so long ago, some fifty years ago, was transmitted by Maharishi, a representative of the Vedic tradition. With the help of this technique, a person can gain experience and knowledge of the highest state of consciousness. This practice is becoming increasingly important in the modern world, as people increasingly find themselves at extreme, critical points in their own development.

Transcendental meditation (Latin for “going beyond thought”) is a natural, simple technique using mantras. It’s easy to learn, and the effect will be noticeable very quickly. The practice should be spent 15-20 minutes twice a day, taking a comfortable sitting position and closing your eyes.

Transcendental meditation is a current that is polar to the course of thinking. Emerging thoughts take on clearer forms. They are the basis of our words and actions; they are the external side of our consciousness. Transcendental meditation is the opposite process. This practice directs our mind inward to the beginning stages of thinking, ultimately reaching the origins of thought. In the process of practice, the mind reaches the point of primordial awakening, which is the foundation of consciousness.

This technique is a technique that should be resorted to systematically in order to be able to concentrate attention within oneself, to feel and cognize the deep tiers, those levels of one’s own consciousness where serenity reigns, until the mind manages to achieve complete peace in the ordinary state of human consciousness.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Transcendental Meditation

By regularly practicing transcendental meditation, you can:

Relax both physically and emotionally, take a deep rest. Twenty minutes of meditation allows the brain to rest as if it were an 8-10 hour sleep.

Effectively resist stressful situations, get out of depression, relieve tension.

Strengthen the nervous system, develop resistance to stressful situations.

Quickly restore physical strength and increase vital energy.

    Improve psycho-emotional state.

Normalize blood pressure (high and low).

Increase resistance to various diseases and improve health.

Eliminate insomnia and other sleep disorders, improve natural biorhythms.

    Unleash your creative abilities.

Develop mental abilities and the ability to make the right decisions in critical situations.

Give up bad habits (such as smoking, drugs, alcohol).

    Increase personal effectiveness and self-esteem.

We will pay attention to the positive aspects of transcendental meditation a little lower.

Since this practice belongs to the traditions of yoga, it has some contraindications for independent practice. You should not practice transcendental meditation if you have:

    psychoclinical diagnoses;

    fears of performing the practice, as well as giving mantras meaning;

    extreme states of consciousness;

low level of intelligence: the practice of transcendental meditation is performed independently, so it is important for the meditator to understand where efforts should be directed, and reflection skills are also important.

For a person who is convinced that he is always right, goes ahead and does not take into account the problems occurring in life, this is fraught with a departure from the canonical execution of the technique and sedentary hallucinations, which in turn can lead to the manifestation of schizophrenic symptoms.

Technique for performing transcendental meditation

Regardless of the technique of meditation practice, its essence remains the same. Transcendental meditation is no exception. Essentially, this is performing meditation on mantras, which are a specially selected sequence of sounds that, during pronunciation, affect the human body in a certain way. That is, it is a kind of sound therapy, during which the meditator concentrates on the sounds that he pronounces.

A guru teaching the practice of transcendental meditation must understand the student's characteristics and choose a personal sequence of sounds (mantra) for him, and then teach him how to use it correctly. In this case, the personal focus of the mantra, which no one else can use, is the secret of this technique. However, personal sacred texts were not effective in all cases, and sometimes they could cause harm to the meditator.

Mantras themselves are not intended for the practice of transcendental meditation, they are taken from Sanskrit sources of the Hindus. When selecting texts, it is necessary to focus on the age of the meditator. Once a person knows his mantra, he needs time to adapt to it. First, the student, under the control of the teacher, pronounces it out loud; over time, the sounds are pronounced more quietly until the student begins to pronounce them mentally. After this, you can proceed directly to practice.

The table below lists mantras suitable for both men and women, according to age. You need to select the one you need and read it mentally.

As an example of performing the practice, you can take the universal, but at the same time very effective mantra “OM”.

Preparation for performing transcendental meditation is as follows:

You need to sit down (you can use a comfortable chair or simply take a stable position, for example, sitting cross-legged). If you are in a car, a car seat is also suitable for this practice.

Although we won’t go deep into a trance, we shouldn’t forget about the rules of meditation:

    You should sit down as comfortably as possible, eliminating any irritating factors;

It is better to have a clock in front of your eyes (one with arrows would be most suitable): before you begin the “immersion”, you need to note and remember how the arrows will be positioned after 20 minutes - this is the time for meditation.

Meditation:

Slowly lower your eyelids and feel your body. Start with your spine, feel how smooth it is, how well and comfortably it supports you. Feel a wave of relaxation passing through your entire body, starting from the back of your head, moving to your forehead, eyes, cheeks, chin...

Move the wave lower to your toes. You can skip it in the opposite direction. Feel a pleasant heaviness throughout your body, it becomes like cotton wool.

Exhale and hold your breath for a couple of seconds. The exhalation must be complete so that there is no air left in the lungs. Then inhale, imagining how a flow of energy penetrates your body through the top of your head, enters your lungs, and fills them, as if you were pouring water into a bag. The air fills the lower part, gradually rising.

Concentrate the flow of incoming energy in the solar plexus area, feel how it accumulates in this place.

Exhale while pronouncing the sound “OM”. Pronounce this mantra as a sequence of sounds A-O-U-M. While chanting the mantra, move your attention from the solar plexus to the chest, then to the throat and ending with the crown. After this, exhale completely again.

Take a deep breath again, don’t strain, say the mantra.

When you first start practicing, it will be difficult for you to free yourself from various thoughts. This condition will go away on its own, do not try to get rid of it. As you shift more and more attention to chanting the mantra and concentrate on the incoming flow of energy (prana), extraneous thoughts will recede.

Try to change the thoughts that come to you at the beginning of practice to positive, pleasant, kind ones. Remember some moments from your life, envelop your consciousness with warmth and love, and then release them along with the energy that leaves your body during exhalation. Imagine how illness leaves the body. But do not forget about pronouncing the mantra “OM”.

Ultimately, your thoughts will leave you, only the mantra itself will remain.

To exit meditation:

Once you feel that you have already rested, you can leave the meditative state. Concentrate on your eyes, turn on your vision. Open your eyelids and look at your watch. If you see that 20 minutes have not yet ended (only 5-10 minutes have passed), you should continue the practice. If the meditation process lasted about 15 minutes, then you can begin to exit this state.

Concentrate on the top of your head, pass a wave of slight tension throughout your body, working from top to bottom. You shouldn’t strain your muscles, just start feeling them, as if “turning them on.” By “connecting” your hearing, you will begin to hear previously inaccessible sounds.

Before you finally turn on your vision, feel your whole body. You can move your arm or leg slightly and feel them.

After you fully feel your body, slowly open your eyes and... you will see how beautiful the world around you is.

The moment you come out of the state of transcendental meditation, the senses work at full capacity, almost reaching the limit of the super senses. The world around seems to be painted with brighter, pleasant colors, filled with many sounds and smells.

Along with other methods of practical psychology, meditation is similar to systems for the development of feelings and supersenses.

The above information is enough to begin the practice of transcendental meditation. You just have to take it and try it. Give up the desire to do everything right at once. Your standard and guideline should only be your inner state and the feelings you experience.

Effect of Transcendental Meditation on Stress and Depression

Stress

After any experience we have in life, there remains a certain impression or tension that our nervous system stores. A strong negative impression can be felt, for example, as a “sediment in the heart.” By being able to completely relax the body, you can literally relax all the stored tensions.

You can imagine this process using the example of a board. When we wake up in the morning, this board is clean, but everything that we experience during the day is applied to it as a drawing. At some point, it turns out to be completely drawn, that is, our nervous system is not able to perceive further experience. This means it's time to clean the board.

Our body is cleansed of experiences and emotions that have accumulated during the day in sleep. At this time, the body relaxes, the tensions received during the day weaken, and impressions are erased. However, the number of sensations we receive is too great, which means that during sleep they cannot all be removed.

In addition, we often do not rest deeply enough during sleep, so deep impressions also cannot be removed from our consciousness. In such cases, we feel that the next morning the tension has decreased, but has not completely disappeared. This means we didn't get enough rest during the night.

During transcendental meditation, our mind is in a state of inner silence. He enters this state along with the body. This always happens, the body follows the mind. By allowing the mind to fall into a state of complete internal harmony, we give the body the opportunity to plunge into a state of peace, and it will be much deeper than during ordinary sleep. This is confirmed by ongoing research.

Below is a graph obtained during research at Harvard Medical School. To measure resting state, the amount of oxygen consumed by the body was taken. The graph clearly shows that during transcendental meditation the body plunges faster and deeper into this state than during normal rest in sleep.

Thus, with the help of transcendental meditation, you can help the body get rid of deep stress, the most serious tensions, which is impossible even with years of sleep or appropriate therapy. By eliminating the cause itself, you can quickly get rid of its influences. As soon as the basis of tension in the body, which disrupts its normal performance, disappears, the condition of the body as a whole improves.

Depression

Depression affects millions of people around the world. However, modern medicine cannot fully explain the reasons for its occurrence, nor can it offer effective ways to combat it.

There are different points of view on the causes of its occurrence and the mechanisms that control it. However, most researchers are inclined to believe that a person's mood and depression are caused by an imbalance of the neurotransmitter, serotonin. This hormone is also called the “happiness hormone”, despite the fact that it is essentially a neurotransmitter.

The level of serotonin in the human body depends on various factors:

    The small amount produced by brain cells;

    There are no receptor sites that are capable of receiving serotonin;

    The hormone does not reach the desired receptor sites;

Insufficient amount of tryptophan, which is the raw material for the production of serotonin.

According to researchers, in the presence of at least one of the above biochemical factors, depression and other mental or emotional problems may occur, for example: increased anxiety, fears, panic, too much anger, etc. When depressive conditions occur, the brain cannot function normally, the production of serotonin decreases even more, which leads to a worsening of the picture.

Through the practice of transcendental meditation, the body's own healing power is activated, gradually restoring the normal functioning of the brain. Studies have confirmed the fact that during meditation the amount of serotonin produced increases, which persists throughout the day. People who practice transcendental meditation have noted a significant improvement in mood and a decrease in symptoms of depression.

Research shows that the experience of meditation is so powerful that it can change the genetic conditions of clinical depression.

Transcendental Meditation and Health

Despite the fact that our healthcare system takes care of those who are sick, most people turn to doctors when the disease becomes chronic. This explains many chronic health problems, although modern medicine is quite developed. Numerous studies indicate that practicing transcendental meditation has a positive effect on people's health, that is, they suggest that our body is able to heal itself.

With the help of the practice of transcendental meditation, you can bring the body to a state in which the hidden forces and resources of the body are activated.

As a result of regular practice, after a short time you can see how much your health has improved, and most importantly, prevent many problems.

Numerous studies conducted in various countries indicate that transcendental meditation has a positive effect on health in various areas of life (from education to industry).

A long-term study in the United States compared the statistics of 2,000 people who regularly practiced transcendental meditation for 5 years with 600,000 ordinary Americans who did not engage in such practice. The study found that among people practicing transcendental meditation in the age group under 40, the number of doctor visits was 50% lower than the average. In the age group over 40 years old, this figure reached 70%.

The study found that people who practice transcendental meditation had fewer visits to all categories of doctors, while at the same time, this group had more visits to medicine in connection with childbirth. Thus, 87% fewer people visited for heart disease, and 60% less for malignant neoplasms.

It is no secret that insulin resistance increases as a result of the production of the stress hormone cortisol. At the same time, the practice of transcendental meditation helps to significantly reduce its level. During meditation, a person enters a state of deepest relaxation, at which time the body’s hidden resources are activated and at the same time the level of cortisol decreases. Regular practice results in hormone levels constantly decreasing because the body begins to work in a more relaxed state.

Is it possible to completely get rid of type 2 diabetes with the help of transcendental meditation? Of course, this possibility is significantly influenced by the degree of the disease, but meditative practice helps reverse the process - from deterioration to improvement.

There are two reasons why the study of the effects of transcendental meditation on type 2 diabetes is special:

The uniqueness of the result obtained (since diabetes is an incurable disease).

The highest quality of the research conducted.

The study was conducted by the US Government's National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is considered the world's most prestigious medical research institution. More than $24 million has been spent to support ongoing NIH research.

Research has been conducted and supported by the NIH for over 20 years because it is clear that transcendental meditation works and can have a positive effect not only on diabetes, but also on cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and high cholesterol.

The Diabetes, NCD Study tracked a group of 106 people with heart disease. They were randomly divided into a group practicing transcendental meditation, and a group that received medical advice and recommendations for changing their usual lifestyle. Patients from the first group did not radically change their lifestyle, but they introduced daily meditation for 20 minutes twice a day.

The researchers were not informed about the patients' membership in one group or another. Insulin resistance and blood pressure in both groups were studied as part of metabolic syndrome, a combination of factors that cause heart disease and other health problems.

16 weeks of regular transcendental meditation showed significant improvements in both blood pressure and insulin resistance. In the second group, these indicators worsened, although their patients’ lifestyles underwent changes, including an increase in their physical activity. The study results were published in the Archives of Internal Medicine of the American Medical Association (Volume 166, June 12, 2006).

The Effect of Transcendental Meditation on Creativity and Intelligence

Perhaps it is creativity that is most dependent on the extent to which the brain is able to function coherently, as a single whole. Academia calls this “whole-brain creativity.” To determine this state, EEG coherence is measured, and transcendental meditation, like nothing else, can increase EEG coherence.

The results of numerous studies demonstrate the development of creative potential. One of the most impressive is an analysis of three different, unrelated studies that were conducted in Taiwan.

362 Taiwanese schoolchildren were randomly divided into four groups, one of which practiced transcendental meditation (TM), and three control groups. Students from the first group were allowed to sleep, the second group turned to contemplative meditation, and the third group was not given any attention. Six months to a year later, the researchers noted that the group of students practicing TM, in comparison with other groups, showed a significant increase in mental abilities, including creative ones.

The difference in the growth of these indicators was large and consistent, the value of “p” was 1 in 12.5 billion: p = 0.0000000008. For scientists, the indicator is surprising: 1 in 20 (p<0,05), при этом, чем ниже значение р, тем более впечатляющим является результат. У учащихся, выполнявших практику трансцендентальной медитации, значительно снизились и симптомы стресса.

Even more impressive is an experiment in which the practice of transcendental meditation was part of the educational process throughout school. These students have won prizes four times in the World Creative Problem Solving Competition, despite the fact that over 100,000 of the world's most creative students take part in the competition.

Modern science believes that our IQ finishes developing around the age of 18. That is, by this time our brain reaches the peak of its development, and what we received remains with us for the rest of our lives.

However, research conducted on transcendental meditation suggests that the concept is outdated. Research shows a strong correlation between IQ and the brain's ability to function as a whole, a condition that can be measured using EEG coherence. Thus, science speaks of the impossibility of increasing IQ, since there are no techniques that can increase EEG consistency. However, the practice of TM demonstrates precisely this effect.

As a result, you can see an increase in IQ, including in adults.

According to this study, the IQ of the control group of students remained at the same level, but the IQ level of the group practicing transcendental meditation increased significantly. The resulting p result was less than 0.0001, which is 500 times better than the generally accepted research standard.

Take a look into the corner of true magic!

Transcendental meditation is a very simple and natural technique for bringing mental activity into a state of complete inner calm, providing deep mental and physical rest.

It is not a religion in the usual sense of the word, since it does not depend on belief in its effectiveness. The practice of TM does not involve beliefs, dogmas or doctrines, articles of faith or religious practices. Inner peace is a universal human experience and is achieved naturally because the nervous system can function normally in a balanced state if left undisturbed.

Benefits of Transcendental Meditation

The result of calm is, firstly, the elimination of severe stress due to the acquired rest. Secondly, a person comes into contact with deeper and more creative layers of his consciousness.

This does not mean a hypnotic trance or a disconnected, empty mind. Against. During practice, the mind remains ready for any activity. Moreover, a person knows perfectly well what is happening around him, he is internally awake, but his body is in a state of deep peace and his mind is peaceful. At the deepest stage, the activity of the mind completely subsides, but the subject himself remains in clear consciousness. This is a state of inner silence, wakeful peace. It is called transcendental consciousness because ultimately it is a state of consciousness, not unconsciousness, where the more active form of thinking becomes transcendental, going outward, while the mind remains awake but silent.

The subject does not try to suppress the activity of the mind during the practice or during the day. During practice, the mind spontaneously, effortlessly descends to a calmer level of activity. There is no need to suppress anything; you need to be fully aware of what is happening inside and outside.

Independent meditation is a preparation for activity, and not a form of escape from reality; it is not a regulated anesthesia that protects you from the hardships of earthly life. Transcendental meditation refreshes, revitalizes and purifies the whole person, helping him to bring more creative effort and energy into the work in which he is engaged. So, after taking a shower in the morning, we don’t have to think about it the rest of the day to feel clean. The same thing happens with practice, we use its technique, the results of which spontaneously remain with us. They don't depend on what we think about them. They do not depend on faith in them, but depend on the natural capabilities of the nervous system, subject to a certain amount of rest, to recover and eliminate stress.

Sitting comfortably and closing your eyes, a person exercises for 15–20 minutes twice a day. The most suitable time for this is in the morning and evening before meals. Before eating - because the process of digestion and practice do not combine very well. Meditation allows the body to find peace, and digestion activates the body's metabolism and energy. During the rest of the day, we forget about the practice, continuing with our normal activities - physical, mental or spiritual.

Conditions for meditation

The effect of the TM technique occurs automatically; it does not depend on the sensory and intellectual imagination or on external circumstances. There are no special dress uniforms, clothes or food. For classes, we settle down in a fairly quiet and comfortable place and calmly go about our business. Thus, TM is clearly different from everything that is usually associated with religion and religious rituals. However, it can have a significant impact on a person's religiosity.

The technique consists of pronouncing a specific sound without effort, which is creative in its effect and, in its choice, purely individual. The word "mantra" literally means "a vehicle for the movement of thought." It is a pure sound without meaning or associations, which calms the mind while maintaining alertness and concentration. The latter is especially important because meditation is not a position in which the mind loses concentration and the will of a person is at the mercy of a fleeting mental impulse. The meditator independently controls the process and can easily stop it by opening his eyes. And also, at his own discretion, the practitioner can either get distracted and daydream, or return to the correct use of sounds.

Using mantras

A mantra is not a prayer in the usual sense of offering praise, supplication or worship. We use sound to keep our mind alert, while the sound itself gradually fades away until it disappears completely. In this deepest stage of meditation, which is transcendental consciousness, meaning is left behind. Once we have achieved our goal, we leave this situation.

In practice, we meditate not on the mantra, but with the mantra. Even the sound itself does not penetrate to the deepest stage of transcendence - it remains behind. It is curious that the use of texts in TM is not “empty repetition” or an incessant hypnotic pulsation in the head.

During classes, they do not resort to singing any texts alone or collectively, which causes a feeling of hypnotic trance, and in large crowds of people - mass hysteria. The use of sound in TM is completely simple and natural. It is only a means to an end, not the end itself. It is something we use and then leave when we reach calm.

A mantra helps the mind choose a natural image, a path of movement in the direction that best suits it. TM is not a technique of concentration or discursive meditation, nor of focusing on an image, because all this brings the mind into a state of heightened activity and prevents it from falling into silent silence. Because mantra is pure sound, devoid of meaning or connotation, no specific associations can distract the intellect and emotions of a person.

Kundalini yoga- a direction of yoga with an emphasis on breathing exercises and meditation. The lessons involve both static and dynamic work with the body, medium intensity physical activity and a lot of meditative practices. Prepare for hard work and regular practice: most kriyas and meditations need to be performed for 40 days daily. Such classes will be of interest to those who have already taken their first steps in yoga and love to meditate.

Will help you: strengthen body muscles, relax, cheer up, relieve stress, lose weight.

Suitable for you: kundalini yoga video lessons with Alexey Merkulov, kundalini yoga classes with Alexey Vladovsky.

Yoga Nidra- practice of deep relaxation, yogic sleep. It is a long meditation in the corpse pose under the guidance of an instructor. It has no medical contraindications and is suitable even for beginners.
Will help you: relax, relieve stress, discover yoga.

Bikram yoga is a set of 28 exercises that are performed by students in a room heated to 38 degrees. By constantly maintaining a high temperature, sweating increases, toxins are removed from the body faster, and the muscles become more flexible. This style of yoga focuses only on the fitness component and leaves aside spiritual practices.

Aeroyoga- Aerial yoga, or, as it is also called, “yoga on hammocks,” is one of the most modern types of yoga, which allows you to perform asanas in the air. Aerial yoga is performed in a specially equipped room in which small hammocks are suspended from the ceiling. It is in them that asanas are performed. This type of yoga makes it possible to quickly master some complex asanas, and also promises good physical activity, develops flexibility and strength.

Hatha yoga- one of the most common types of practice; many original styles of yoga are based on it. Suitable for both beginners and experienced practitioners. Hatha yoga lessons help you master basic asanas and simple meditations. Typically, classes are conducted at a leisurely pace and involve predominantly static load.

Will help you: get acquainted with yoga, lose weight, strengthen muscles, relieve stress, cheer up.

Suitable for you: hatha yoga video lessons, couples yoga classes.

Ashtanga yoga- Ashtanga, which literally means “the eight-step path to the final goal,” is one of the complex styles of yoga. This direction combines different practices and represents an endless flow in which one exercise smoothly transitions into another. Each asana should be held for several breathing cycles. Ashtanga yoga will require strength and endurance from its adherents.

Yoga Iyengar- This direction of yoga is named after its founder, who created an entire health complex designed for students of any age and level of training. It was Iyengar yoga that first allowed the use of auxiliary devices (rollers, belts) in classes, which made it easier for beginners to perform many asanas. The purpose of this style of yoga is to promote health. Much attention is paid to the correct performance of asanas, which are considered the basis for mental and physical recovery.

However, a mantra is not a meaningless phrase taken at random. It is precisely because it has no semantic meaning that it is not meaningless. Mantras produce a very specific and, when used correctly, beneficial effects. Relevant studies have shown very interesting results. From the moment a person begins to practice TM, profound physiological changes begin to occur, especially in the activity of the midbrain.

It follows that the mantras used in TM affect the “change of speed” in the nervous system. The immediate and directly measurable effect of this is that there is much greater order in the activity of the waves, at times this order is such that it is called wave coherence or synchronicity. This effect is completely absent when trials are performed with random or meaningless sounds. This area of research is of particular interest given the understanding that profound mental and emotional stress manifests itself in the form of erratic activity in the midbrain.

Therefore, anyone who thinks that any word chosen at random can be a mantra is mistaken. It is quite possible that other systems, not just TM, can help in finding rest and peace, but the impact of mantras in TM is much wider in its range, much deeper. The mantras used in TM are absolutely specific, they are used to maintain vitality and are chosen for this purpose, they are selected taking into account their individual suitability for everyone.

The right mantra used correctly is an integral part of the TM technique. This is so because it allows the mind to move effortlessly into a calmer and broader field of knowledge, while remaining sharply focused, concentrated. Only then will the results be creative, fruitful and resilient, having a positive impact on both the individual and the environment. This is also very important because, as we know, our thoughts and feelings affect the thoughts and feelings of other people.

Spiritual effect

Quite a lot of research has been conducted and published so as not to dwell now on the physical, psychological, and physiological effects of TM. It is obvious that if a person lives a creative life, and his mental and physical well-being improves all the time, then his social and personal relationships should also improve.

TM does not take a person away from the world. Against. By relieving stress and anxiety, freeing him to a large extent from his own problems and neuroses, she frees his hands to provide more help to other people. As mental and emotional clouds clear and our awareness of the world becomes clearer, we perceive the needs and wants of our fellow men more clearly and with greater understanding. And the stronger we become, freeing ourselves from fear and enriching our hearts with good qualities, the more useful our services will be. Love grows naturally as the paths through which love flows are cleared.

TM increases creativity in the broadest sense of this concept, turning the field of human activity into a channel through which goodness enters the world. TM is meditation leading to action. It has nothing to do with withdrawing from the world, quite the opposite. To live means to grow, expand and be fulfilled. TM allows a person to begin to grow again, in a variety of areas, through meditation and living a full life, rather than withdrawing into oneself. Meditation itself could be called a withdrawal, a drawing back of the mind to its source in depth and silence, so that then, like an arrow pulling back the string of a bow, this mind can, refreshed, break free and rush to activity.

Indeed, results are strengthened in action, but not in withdrawal from life. This is reminiscent of the ancient method of dyeing fabric: first, it is dipped in paint, then hung in the sun, under the rays of which it almost fades. It is again dipped in paint and hung out in the sun again, and so on many times until the fabric stops discoloring. That is, the color of the fabric would not become permanent if it were not hung in the sun. Like this, the purpose of practice is everyday life. Initially we meditate for ourselves, but the results are not limited to us.

Some believe that TM can lead one into the realm of “mystical” experiences and lead one along the path of “spiritual wanderings.” In reality, TM has nothing to do with mysticism, and no “spiritual wandering” threatens. As has already been said, we meditate not for the sake of meditation itself, nor for the sake of any special experiences or experiences in the process, but in order to influence our own mind, body and activities.

As for the personal experience we receive, it is extremely varied, because it depends on the subject, on whether we are tired or cheerful, tense or calm, hungry or well-fed. We meditate very naturally, without any initial ideas or expectations. We always have the opportunity to return to inner silence and peace, because it is the state of deepest peace of mind that is most beneficial. Everything else is secondary. Christian tradition rightly warns people against pursuing a “mystical experience,” because such a condition can be caused by various reasons, for example, increased oxygen levels in the blood, and can be a sign of both illness and health.

Christians may ask why they need TM. Some even accuse her followers of claiming that TM is “the only way,” but this accusation is baseless and false. In fact, we argue that TM is the simplest and easiest way to achieve inner peace. This is especially useful for spiritual development, because TM can be practiced virtually anywhere, at any time.

When discussing the influence of TM on the spiritual development of a person, we must indicate what is meant here by the word “spiritual”. Usually, the spiritual is understood as something that goes beyond, transcends the boundaries of the physical world, the world of matter. Thus, we can say that transcendental consciousness is a purely spiritual concept because to experience it one must go beyond the boundaries of mental, emotional and physical activity. But, as we have already said, this state is a natural human property.

What is spiritual is our innermost self, our true nature or true self. The benefit of TM is that it allows us to easily return to a calm state of mind, and when we achieve it, it helps to eliminate the stress that prevents us from being in this state.

We do not “save ourselves in our own strength.” Effort has no place in TM. We use technology effortlessly, which helps to transfer mental activity to a state of rest. It is reminiscent of diving when the correct angle is found between the body and the surface of the water. There is no need to push anything. Just as the force of gravity directs us towards water, so spiritual tranquility directs the mind towards the transcendental.

In this calm state, we are more likely to hear the “still, small voice” within ourselves. This does not mean that we have brought God closer to us. He is already with us. We contribute to the removal of obstacles that previously existed within us. We remove the barriers that we have erected between ourselves and his constant presence within us.

A very simple and natural way to achieve peace of mind and general relaxation, which does not involve contemplation or concentration. The best effect is achieved by regular practice twice a day for twenty minutes.

Long-term practice of TM can lead to a state of cosmic consciousness in which the experience of transcendence is always present in consciousness, even during active activity. A person can come to experience himself as universal and omnipresent.

Transcendental meditation has been found to be characterized by the activation of alpha brainwaves in the brain (Theta meditation), which are characteristic of a state of relaxation. Also interesting is the fact that although the goal of TM is not to develop the ability to live and be aware of the experience of the present moment (Mindfulness Meditation), those who regularly practiced TM for more than 3 months in a row also increased their ability to be aware of the “moment”.

4 important positive effects

1) Relieves stress

Of course, this effect is present as a result of the practice of most meditations. However, stress is in many cases the main cause of illness and dysfunction in the body and mind.

Transcendental meditation provides deep relaxation of the body and mind, as a result of which the functioning of the nervous system is normalized, hormonal levels and the ability to sleep healthy return to normal.

2) Improves cognitive abilities

Numerous studies involving students of different ages and levels of educational complexity (schoolchildren, undergraduates, graduate students, etc.) show that the practice of TM increases intellectual capabilities and learning ability.

3) Normalizes blood pressure

Numerous studies confirm that TM reduces blood pressure in people suffering from hypertension and heart disease, regardless of the age of the practitioner and their level of daily activity.

4) Helps to successfully overcome addiction to alcohol and cigarettes

To practice TM, you do not necessarily need to quit smoking, drinking alcohol, or taking other intoxicants.

However, research shows that giving up such addictions occurs quite naturally among practitioners.

The faster addicts achieved stress reduction through meditation, the faster they recovered from their addictions.

Technique

You will not find the transcendental meditation technique on the Internet or in a regular bookstore. You can only learn the basics from a certified teacher who has undergone special training and teaches the technique very accurately. Moreover, the teaching and practice of the technique are standardized.

Mantras

Although transcendental meditation is not mantra-based meditation in the sense that its purpose is to achieve the transcendental - to go beyond the limits of experience, it nevertheless involves the use of mantras as a tool to overcome "mind-wandering" and thoughts.

Using a mantra, the practitioner first thinks about the sound of the mantra, and during the course of practice this active thought about the mantra itself is reduced to zero, and awareness of the very source of the thought comes, and the conscious mind reaches the transcendental realm of existence.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the Indian guru who popularized the TM technique for widespread use, said:

“A mantra is a special thought that suits us, it is a sound that suits us, which we receive from a trained teacher of Transcendental Meditation.”

Thus, each practitioner will have his own mantra, specially transmitted by the teacher.

Scientific base

You can find many English-language publications devoted to research into the influence of transcendental meditation on various diseases, the general physical and psychological state of a person. Such publications substantiate that regular practice of transcendental meditation (TM) has a positive effect on health.

Here are just a few of them:

TM has significant effects on the sympathetic system and adrenal function

    Regular practitioners of this meditation have a low hormonal response to daily stress;

As a result of TM practice, blood pressure is significantly reduced

    Associated data also indicate improvements in other risk factors—cardiovascular disease and clinical outcomes resulting from heart failure;

TM strongly influences the physiological and psychological factors that lead to substance abuse

As a result of the research, compared with control conditions, it was the group that regularly practiced transcendental meditation that significantly reduced the use of alcohol, cigarettes and drugs (including addiction to hard drugs). Over time, the results of this group were maintained and even improved.

TM significantly affects the number of immune cells

Scientists measured the number of white blood cells and lymphocytes in the blood, which help fight viruses and bacteria. A control group of 16 healthy people was compared with a group of 19 people who regularly practice either Transcendental Meditation or the more advanced technique of TM-Sidhi.

The study found a significant difference in the level of immune cell production between the study groups, and the authors hypothesized that the practice of meditation in question reduces the overall level of stress in the body, which in turn has a significant effect on immune cells.
