Lag of quartz watch. Why is the new wall clock always lagging behind? The clock is rushing - an anomaly, warning or banal malfunction

I’ll make a reservation right away: perform the actions described below at your own peril and risk, however, if you have normal hands and the absence of bad ideas, everything will definitely work out. If your watch is under warranty, or you just don't know where the adjustment screw trimmer is in your model, don't do it! Also, I do not recommend doing this on watches, the error of which is small, and does not go beyond the manufacturer's declared. Why is it necessary? There are instances of watches in which the course is faster than the declared one (less often slower). I have two of them: DW 290 T - more than 40 seconds per month. And DW 6600 more than 25 sec/s. As if a little annoying when the clock squeaks not at the same time, but with a difference of a couple of seconds. For a long time I did not know how to deal with this, and in the watch shops of my city they shrugged their shoulders (they generally have nothing to do with electronics).
There are two options: to exchange a watch with a noted rate error higher than declared by the manufacturer (most often 15-20 seconds per month) for a new one (not the fact that it is not the same) or to correct the accuracy yourself. This experiment took me almost a month, since there are a couple of hours, and I can scoff at some of them, in view of their “deservedness”.
Good luck to everyone who decides!

Necessary materials:

Then I tried only a synchronized smartphone. Synchronized over the Internet, or GPS. As a result, I stopped only on GPS. How I determined: at the time of resetting seconds on GPS, I reset seconds on my watch, waited a day, checked with GPS, noticed how many seconds had gone forward or backward, later how synchronously the numbers changed, that is, they changed almost the same, only on GPS, for example a little earlier on the clock a little later (milliseconds are already sooooo cool, why I will explain later).

You can also use the exact definition of error:

  • Step 1 - Set the clock relative to atomic time.
  • Step 2 - Check with the atomic time.
  • You have to check exactly how much your clock is ahead or behind the atomic ones. If you followed step 1 exactly, then you will see that the time on the atomic ones is exactly the same as on your “experimental” ones. You can just try to look at your clock and atomic at the same time.
There is an easier way to do this.

No matter how exactly you count in the table, in any case, the result of the calculation will depend on your reaction speed, and will differ on how quickly you press the stopwatch button.

So, in the process of observations, in fact, we determined that the course of your clock is accelerated by .... seconds a month, the synchronization function does not smell, which means hope for oneself, a darling. We will need: screwdriver(s), possibly a screwback key (twisted back cover).

Remove the clock cover. We unscrew the bolts, immediately hide them in a zip bag or in a box, in the bag there are rubber gaskets, you can also cover. It remains to remove (if removed) the spring:

Be careful with it, don't lose it!

The adjustment process itself: we insert a screwdriver of the required size into the adjustment screw shaft, feel for the screw, and VERY carefully turn the screw counterclockwise, literally half a millimeter, if I may say so. 1/32 turn in one direction, as written in the manual. They argue that it is not known in which direction the rotation can speed up or slow down, in mine, as I wrote above, clockwise speeds up, counterclockwise speeds up. It so happened that at first I turned dashingly back (I picked up a screwdriver 🙂 then I returned very slowly.

Now repeat the whole process, and repeat until you are satisfied with the accuracy. Watching the indicators, you should do less and less to adjust the screw every day. This is quite difficult to determine by the microscopic movement (turn) of the adjustment screw. If you spin too much in one direction, it's okay, the next day you can just make a small adjustment to the setting to turn back the excess. You may find that after a while you need two or three days to understand the difference between an atomic clock and yours. If you think this is a good indicator, stop the experiment! With patience and experience, you can eventually set your watch to perfection.
Well, purely American in the end:

Who needs atomic time? (Who needs atomic time?)

Result

Full measurement option:

  1. Look at your watch, and turn on the stopwatch (external) when the seconds on your watch are 00.
  2. Look at your watch, and stop the stopwatch when the seconds of your watch reach 05.
  • If you set the clock very accurately with atomic time, the stopwatch will look exactly 05 seconds. So if there is any difference from 05 seconds, it's noticeable and look in which direction the offset is from the time axis. To get offset targets, you just need to subtract 5 from the stopwatch. So: Offset = Stopwatch reading - 5. For example, if the stopwatch reading is 00:05:20 (i.e. 5 seconds and 20/100ms), then you consider: 5.20 - 5 = 0.2. We see that your clock is running with a delay of 0.2 seconds. Or, if the stopwatch is 00:04:70 (i.e. 4 seconds and 70/100ms), then we consider: 4.70-5 = -0.3. So your clock is 0.3 seconds faster. In a notebook, write down the current date and error. (Don't forget the + or - sign)

Definition of error

  1. Wait one day.
    Repeat step 2.
We look at how your clock is currently running, since you are not synchronized with the atomic ones, observe the offset error and calculate how fast or slow the clock is running.
In your notebook, now something like Table 1.1.
    Table 1.1: Accuracy chart

Step 4 - Pay Attention to the Target Accuracy Clock
Write down the date, time, and how much your watch has gained or lost. Your notepad will look like this:
Table 1.2: Accuracy chart

Now subtract the first number from the second. For example, -0.5 - -0.1 = -0.5 + 0.1 = -0.4. In this case, the number is negative and the clock advances by 0.4 seconds.

For people who are accustomed to being there at the agreed time, it is very important that the clock is running. right on national time. To avoid being late for business meetings, to get to work or institute on time, you should watch the clock and treat it with care.

The clock is behind

Causes and remedies for lagging mechanical watches

Mechanical watches are classics, precision and style. In addition, mechanical watches are the most accurate movement in the world and are the least likely to fall behind compared to other models.

However, everyone should know what to do if a mechanical watch is lagging behind in order to fix the problem in time.

The main factors affecting the operation of the clock:

  1. Temperature fluctuations. Mechanical watches are very sensitive to cold temperatures and extreme heat. Therefore, it is not recommended to keep them in direct sunlight, and also not to leave them in the cold. The thing is that mechanical watches consist of metal elements, and in a cold environment they freeze, and in hot weather they soften. This breaks the chronometer, and they will no longer show the exact time.
  2. Factory mechanism. Irregular or incorrect winding of the watch contributes to the movement error. To avoid this, chronometers should be wound at the same time of day or in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
  3. Changing the angle for self-winding watches. Such models require a constant change of angle. Therefore, with occasional use, they may begin to show inaccurate time. Besides, such chronometers do not need frequent winding. Such use results in a constant tension of the spring, which leads to rapid wear.
  4. Mechanism clogging. Only a professional technician can fix this problem.

Timely winding mechanism

Also the reasons why the watch on the wrist lags behind may arise due to mechanical damage caused by a blow or a fall. If you use the watch and follow the instruction manual, the mechanism will last a long time and will never let you down.

How to protect the watch from breakage and incorrect movement?

A mechanical watch will work accurately if compliance with the following rules:

  1. It is necessary to wind the spring regularly with smooth movements.
  2. The translation of the hands is carried out in the usual course of the movement of the clock.
  3. Once a year, take the watch to the workshop for maintenance. The master will carefully lubricate the mechanism, remove unwanted dust and accurately set the time.

It should be remembered that in case of inaccurate work of the watch or its breakdown, do not carry out repairs yourself. This is a very fragile mechanism that is best left to a professional.

Quartz watch lagging - how to fix the problem?

Many people wonder why quartz watches lag behind and how to deal with it. The point is that quartz vibrates at a constant frequency, which is affected by temperature fluctuations.

If the watch is worn frequently, the risk of the movement lagging is greatly reduced, as the temperature is more or less constant. If they are stored in other places, then they will begin to lag behind or begin to rush.

Possible reasons why the clock began to lag:

  1. Prevention. Irregular maintenance leads to wear and tear of the watch and even a complete stop.
  2. Battery. This is the main reason for inaccurate time. It may oxidize or discharge.
  3. Moisture or dust ingress. This happens when the case is leaky.

Basically, in such models, independent battery replacement is not provided. Therefore, you should contact the workshop, where they know what to do, they will accurately determine and eliminate the cause.

Battery replacement at the master

Electronic clock lag

The reasons why electronic watches lag behind can be caused by the same problems as quartz ones. This is a battery discharge or mechanical damage.

In addition, the electronic mechanism of this chronometer is very susceptible to magnetic fields that are present in modern household appliances.

Therefore, it is very important to avoid all contact with household appliances.

How to conduct an electronic clock factory?

As a rule, the time on an electronic watch is set using special buttons. One button, when pressed, displays the hours, minutes and seconds on the display. With the help of the second time indicators change.

When using the electronic watch, time to replace the battery and make sure it is not exposed to moisture.

Setting the time on the electronic clock

If the wall clock on batteries is lagging behind, then it should be replaced. However, this may not always help fix the problem. Possible mechanical failure that requires repair or preventive measures.

Should know that the inaccurate movement of electronic clocks is a common problem. Especially if these are inexpensive models. The most accurate and practical watches are mechanical models, which can be repaired in the event of a breakdown. But electronic watches often have to be replaced.

When buying, you need to pay attention to the manufacturer and the quality of the materials. If the mechanism will be exposed to moisture, then it is necessary to select models with a sealed case.

It is worth remembering that regardless of the choice of mechanism, watches require regular maintenance and repair by the master. To make them last as long as possible, you should not open the case yourself or troubleshoot.

In this short essay with photos, I will show the general public how to treat a fairly common "sore" digital electronic clock - an inaccurate move. The clock can lag or rush, and most often we do not pay attention to small errors in the course, but when the clock is 5 (five) minutes behind a day, it starts to annoy.
Ready? Go!

Intro

I bought this watch in order to nostalgic for the old Soviet times, when the sun was greener and the grass brighter ... or vice versa? .. it doesn't matter! The main thing is that the joy did not work out - the clock was vilely lagging behind. More than 5 minutes a day. I need to heal, I thought.

Looking ahead, I note that I did not open a dispute, a hundred rubles is not the same money. The problem is not the seller who sent a poor-quality product. The problem is in the product, which the seller cannot check in any way - won't a Chinese / Chinese woman sit and detect the accuracy of the move?

To treat the clock, we need:

Necessarily
+ soldering iron. preferably not very powerful, 25-40 watts is enough. 60 would be too much.
+ replacement quartz resonator. Sold either in China or in any radio shop. is inexpensive, called "watch quartz".
+ thin Phillips screwdriver or thin flathead screwdriver. cross is preferred.

Desirable
+ tweezers with sharp jaws - pick up screws (dada, the case is plastic, the frame is also plastic. screws everywhere)
+ good lighting and a stationary magnifying glass or jeweler's/watchmaker's glasses to get a good look at Little Red Riding Hood's watch.

Parsing the watch

We unscrew the four screws holding the back cover. Carefully remove the cover, remove the piezoelectric resonator (tweeter). We do not paw the squeaker with our fingers, we hold it by the side edges and by the metal base.

We note that there is no protective gasket in the watch, therefore water and sweat will get inside the watch. We understand that the Chinese save on everything for the sake of cheapness, which means that the glass most likely sits on double-sided tape and buttons without rubber seals. This means that the watch will have to be removed in bad weather and during physical work.

Take the watch out of the case.

We remove the case, back cover, screws of the back cover and the squeaker to the side.

We unscrew four screws - three hold the 2016 lithium battery, one holds the spring foot to signal the buzzer.

Let's put it all aside. We are considering fees. More screws are not visible, so it's good.

Carefully remove the board from the plastic clip with tweezers.

Inside the clip, we see a conductive rubber band that transmits a signal to the LCD and the LCD itself itself.
We don’t touch the rubber band with our fingers, because it’s not good. A mote or dirt will get in, some segment on the indicator will fall off and disassemble again ... what for ...
In the blue heat shrink is a coil that gives sound. You don't have to touch it either. damage is easy, the wiring there is thinner than a hair.
But the metal cylinder on the legs is our quartz resonator, which needs to be changed.

To replace the quartz, I decided to use donor quartz from an old motherboard that died ten years ago and I'm slowly taking it apart into a small kit.

The quartz here is slightly larger than in the clock.
Here, for comparison, already soldered quartz from the motherboard and the clock board.

We apply quartz to the board. Fits. we put quartz in a holder, it also fits! Great! We change!

To replace, simply solder one quartz and solder another.
There is no polarity, no special features. The procedure is simple and does not require special qualifications.

Voila! quartz has been replaced. Align the quartz case so that it is just below the board and does not touch the battery.

Reassembly

We assemble the mechanism in the reverse order - we put the board on the clip, there are guide pins. We put the battery on the board, minus down.

We put a contact block on top of the battery. In this watch, he simultaneously holds the battery and is the contact group for the buttons. Fasten with three screws. Then a separate contact on the tweeter. We also screw.

We turn the block over and look - the clock should start. If this does not happen, then either the battery is turned upside down or the quartz is not soldered, or it is inoperative or the board was killed by static :)
Well, if everything worked, carefully put the board in the watch case, center it so that the numbers are parallel to the edge, then install the buzzer back, screw the cover ...

OK it's all over Now!
We have overcome a big problem

During the day, the clock did not go forward or backward, it runs smoothly and accurately. I'll keep an eye on it and report back on the accuracy.

I must say that the procedure for replacing quartz is the same for all quartz watches - digital, analogue. But, we must remember that most Chinese quartz watches are assembled on plastic rivets that are melted by "mushrooms", i.e. in fact, having disassembled the watch, it is very problematic to assemble it.
Well, the size of the quartz also matters - if the quartz from the motherboard did not fit in size, then you would have to look for another, smaller size.

Outside of this "murzilka" there was a film that the Chinese did not remove from the LCD when they put it in a clip. I removed this film and the contrast of the screen increased slightly. The film is almost invisible, but it was on my watch.

UPD .
Over the past four days, since the replacement of the quartz, the watch has run forward by two seconds. 15 seconds per month.
For penny watches and free quartz, I consider the result satisfactory. Personally, it satisfies me quite well.
You can, of course, look for quartz watches at flea markets for a penny, kick a bunch of quartz from there and experiment with accuracy ... but we'll leave that to perfectionists and stoned freaks)))

The comments give a recipe for finer tuning of accuracy by soldering miniature ceramic capacitors. As an alternative to replacing quartz, it is quite viable and healthy. The main thing is that there is a place where these capacitors should be placed. Well, the presence of these ...

And in general, friends, the main thing is not a review, the main thing is comments)))
Thank you all for the valuable ideas and various discussions)))
