Although more and more people use electronic media to read books, interest in the truly printed word does not fade at all. Every city, even the smallest one, has its own library serving several thousand readers. Librarians manage extensive intellectual book depository institutions.

From the outside it may seem that all the work of a library employee consists of issuing forms and filling out registration forms. In fact, this is far from the case. A librarian is a qualified specialist who must have an excellent understanding of the range of books, be a philologist and a bit of a historian.

Librarian Responsibilities

The librarian is directly involved in the formation of the book fund, orders new copies of books, analyzes and monitors the emergence of new literary talents. At the same time, his responsibilities also include repairing old books (which can sometimes be antique and even have historical significance), and writing off those that are completely unusable. After receiving new ones, the librarian sorts them and catalogs them.

The specialist must know the standards for storing books and, if possible, provide the necessary conditions for long-term use. Some antique items require special conditions of increased caution.

Without a doubt, the main requirement for a bibliologist is an excellent knowledge of literature in all its diversity and enormous quantity.

Moreover, the librarian should be aware of not only the books of the direction that interests him, but also all the others that readers may ask about. A specialist will often have to suggest works to people based on their preferences, wishes and level of intellectual development.

The ability to work with a computer is mandatory for a modern library worker. In most institutions, all reader forms and catalogs have long been computerized, so it will be difficult for a person who is far from understanding the simplest programs to adapt to this process.

Is it difficult to work as a librarian?

The librarian profession is specific and requires a person to have a certain character. If he fanatically loves books, is erudite, neat and attentive, then such a specialist will truly be “in his place.”

However, there are also some negative aspects in the work of a bibliologist that can develop into difficulties: an abundance of clerical work, which is tiring and requires a high level of concentration, as well as constant communication with people. Of course, visitors are different, and some of them can make you nervous.

Do not miss:

Pros and cons of being a librarian

Advantages:

  • The profession of bibliologist is by no means boring. A specialist can simultaneously engage in scientific activities, study historical works, participate in organizing exhibitions and excursions;
  • communication mainly with interesting, educated people;
  • A suitable job for those who love to read.

Flaws:

  • low salary;
  • In the modern world, the relevance of paper books is gradually decreasing. The future prospects of the profession are unclear.

The librarian profession can hardly be called a careerist one, but still there are certain steps of the ladder here. The pinnacle of a career is the head of a library; if the institution is large enough, then the head of a department is one of the intermediate options. In addition, there are many other development options: head of a media library, thematic publication, organizer of an educational project.

There is one dangerous moment in the librarian profession - a stop in professional development. Routine work can make the most diligent person bored. It’s worth remembering this and not stopping there.

Seemingly simple and quiet work.
Far from pompous honor
Librarians live.
But their quiet domain
There is no promise of a quiet life.
The reader's inquisitive gaze

You need a special string.

And quickness of mind is needed.
Then we need a detailed conversation,
Then as a sign of agreement - a nod.
Then you are a modest adviser to people,
And he is a serious teacher.
The essence of knowledge is hidden in books.
Read it - the pages will come to life.

Is it easy to be a LIBRARY?

“The library is something like a magic cabinet. The best souls of humanity are enchanted there, but they are waiting for our word to emerge from their silence. We must open the book, and then they will wake up.”

Jorge Luis Borges

There are a great many books in the world. And you probably have a lot of different fairy tales, stories, and collections of poems at home. But there is a place where there are many more books and magazines. These repositories are called libraries. In this story I will tell you about the profession of a librarian.

Libraries are entire book cities, in which there are rows and labyrinths of bookcases and shelves, very similar to streets. Each book and magazine has its own address - a code consisting of letters and numbers, by which you can find the desired copy. It is quite difficult to understand such diversity on your own. This is where a librarian comes to the rescue. He, like no one else, knows his way around the “sea of books” perfectly.

Previously, the librarian was helped in finding the right book by catalog boxes with the names and codes of all books. Now all the data is entered into a computer, into an electronic catalog. The librarian will look at the catalogue, go to the storage room and bring you the book you need. Read for health and become smarter!

It seems that the librarian just sits at the table, fills out forms, writes down, enters data into the computer: who took what book to read or returned. In fact, his responsibilities are much broader. The librarian takes part in the creation of the library fund and places orders for the purchase of new publications, because there are more and more books in the world every day, and many of them are needed by the reader. He also maintains order in the book depository. Strengthens old books, since many of the materials from which they are made (glue, paper, fabrics) age and wear out over time. He also knows very well the conditions in which books, especially ancient copies, should be stored.

Unfortunately, many people nowadays believe that it is not necessary to go to the library to get the information they need, because you can buy almost any book or find the necessary information on the Internet. But reading a good book is like meeting a good person, after which you are left with a lot of positive emotions. Who better than a librarian can advise you exactly the book you want to read. Therefore, no computer program can replace a specialist in this field.

The work of a librarian is not as easy as it might seem at first glance. And not everyone can become the owner of this unique profession! You have to love the book yourself and be able to give practical advice to the reader. People of this profession are very competent, cultured, tactful and know how to control themselves in any situation. They have to communicate a lot with people, which requires knowledge of psychology. Therefore, you are unlikely to be able to hear the librarian raise his voice to someone.

And in order to become a librarian, it is very important to know the history of culture, Russian and foreign literature, and be able to interest the reader in a book. You must have a large amount of knowledge to help anyone understand the ocean of information.

Nowadays, there is an active introduction of electronic technologies into libraries. For example, such as Wi-Fi and radio frequency tags in books, which facilitate their accounting and tracking, computers with access to databases and digitization of rare publications. Therefore, a librarian simply needs to keep up with the times and constantly develop.

They study to become a librarian at a library technical school or at the library department of a cultural institute.

This is interesting:

Very ancient, more than four and a half thousand years old! The first librarians were scribes, and only men. In the 19th century, to get a job in the main library of Russia - the Imperial Public Library - a higher education was not enough. Knowledge of French, German, Latin, and Greek was required. Even junior library staff were required to speak three foreign languages.
