Church of the Life-Giving Trinity on Sparrow Hills. Who is Saint Tryphon and how does he help? |
The Holy Martyr Tryphon of Apamea was born in one of the regions of Asia Minor - Phrygia, not far from the city of Apamea in the village of Kampsada. WITH youth The Lord gave him the power to cast out demons and heal various diseases. Once the inhabitants of his native village were saved by him from hunger: Saint Tryphon, by the power of his prayer, forced away the harmful insects that were destroying grain crops and devastating the fields. Saint Tryphon became especially famous for expelling a demon from the daughter of the Roman Emperor Gordian (238-244). Helping all those suffering, he demanded only one payment - faith in Jesus Christ, by whose grace he healed them.
The appearance of the temple - legends and research The Trifonovsky Church is considered the oldest surviving church in Moscow outside the Kremlin. It was built as an ordinary parish church. According to legend, the falconer of the Moscow Grand Duke once hunted in these places and lost the prince’s favorite bird here. For this he was put in prison, and while in captivity, he remembered that once the holy martyr Tryphon also dealt with birds, and he began to pray earnestly to him until he fell asleep. In a dream, the martyr Tryphon appeared to him and held out a falcon in his hand. Waking up, the falconer actually saw the lost bird in front of him, after which he was freed. In gratitude, the falconer built a church in the name of the martyr Tryphon in the places where his misfortune happened. Pilgrims from all over Moscow and other cities came to the miraculous icon of St. Tryphon, popularly nicknamed “Ambulance.” This legend was depicted on one of the temple frescoes late XVI- started XVII centuries, depicting a horseman with a falcon on his outstretched arm - Saint Tryphon. Subsequently, a different version of the legend appeared, describing similar events, but in relation to Prince Trifon Patrikeev, falconer of the Terrible Tsar Ivan Vasilyevich. However, in Soviet time , during the restoration of the Trifonovskaya Church, an ancient inscription was discovered on the tombstone, which made it possible to date the temple more early date - 1492. A study of the white stone from which the church was built confirmed the dating, after which a memorial plaque “1492” was fixed on the wall of the temple. It is known that Saint Tryphon was traditionally prayed for help in various disasters in the fields and vegetable gardens, which is why the construction of the Tryphon Church in the palace village of Naprudny seems understandable. It is believed that in ancient times the church was wooden and was built as an ordinary rural parish church. According to a convincing version wooden church existed here already under Ivan Kalita, since the area Naprudnoye in his documents is called. Synodal period Under Empress Elizabeth, in the parish of the Trifonovskaya Church, at one time they were going to build the first city cemetery in Moscow outside the city, and turn the church itself into a cemetery church for performing services and memorial services and funerals for the dead. This was due to the empress’s decree prohibiting the burial of the dead in the parishes of central churches and the order to close all cemeteries on the way from the Kremlin to her Lefortovo Palace. However, this idea did not come true, since Naprudnoye with its small church was not suitable for creating a large cemetery there, and it was founded in Maryina Roshcha with the Lazarevsky Church. After the plague epidemic of 1771, when the Pyatnitskoye cemetery was opened at the neighboring Krestovskaya outpost and houses in the area were burned, the Trifonovskaya Church stood without a parish for a long time. They even planned to demolish it due to its disrepair, but still they did not touch this ancient temple. Soon a priceless shrine appeared in it - particles from the holy relics of the martyr Tryphon, which previously rested in the Montenegrin Boka Kotorska. In 1800, the Archimandrite of the Montenegrin ruler Stefan Vukovich came to Moscow, and the Mother See was preparing for his solemn welcome. Moscow silversmith Trifon Dobryakov made a silver shrine as a gift for the holy relics of his heavenly guardian and presented it to the guest of honor. In response, he received particles of holy relics from the Montenegrin Metropolitan and in 1812, at the behest of his heart, he presented the shrine to Emperor Alexander I. Seven years later, the sovereign, in turn, donated it to the Trifonov Church, where the relics were embedded in special expensive reliquaries in the temple icon of St. Tryphon. In the 19th century, the parish of the Trifonov Church increased, and the temple was significantly expanded. A southern chapel was built in it in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, and in 1861 a northern chapel of St. Philaret the Merciful was built. At the very end of the century, a tall, beautiful bell tower appeared according to the design of the architect P. P. Zykov, and in the vast refectory, built according to his own design, a chapel was consecrated in the name of St. Philip, Metropolitan of Moscow. More and more reconstructions and layers on the ancient skeleton of the temple made its appearance in pre-revolutionary Moscow almost unrecognizable in comparison with the canons of ancient Russian architecture, according to which it was originally built. However, even at this time the temple stood out among others: " Poetic white stone miniature incorporated into a modern urban landscape“- this is what a pre-revolutionary local historian wrote about the Trifonov Church. After the revolution Some time after October revolution the distant Trifonov Church was not closed. It is known that in February 1925, on the temple holiday, the Holy Hierarch Patriarch Tikhon served the Liturgy there shortly before his death. In the 1920s, work began to study and restore the appearance of the oldest Moscow temple. Famous master restorers D.P. Sukhov, who saved the Church of St. John the Evangelist in Bronnaya Sloboda, and P.D. Baranovsky took part in them. These works continued after the closure of the temple in 1930 and even during the war - they, like the date of construction of the temple, partially saved it from demolition, although in 1932 it was destroyed by three quarters, and the territory of its graveyard was occupied by a timber warehouse. However, during the war, measurements were made of the church in case of its destruction. The temple survived, and in 1947-1948 the architect L.A. David reconstructed the original appearance of the temple, re-building the drum, dome, cross and three-lobed covering. They say that after this the locals dubbed the temple a chapel. After the revolution, the revered temple icon of St. Tryphon with its relics was transferred to the Znamenskaya Church in Pereyaslavskaya Sloboda near Krestovskaya Zastava, where in the 1980s a chapel was built in the name of St. Tryphon - the side throne was consecrated. The Trifonovskaya Church was placed under state protection, and in 1993 it was assigned to Znamensky Church in Pereyaslavskaya Sloboda . Nowadays the clergy of this temple conducts Sunday services in Trifonovskaya Church. An icon with particles of the relics of the martyr Tryphon, now located in the Church of the Icon of the Sign of the Mother of God (to which the Church of Tryphon is assigned)
Miracles through prayers to the martyr Tryphon Lidia Dobrova Back in the 90s, when there were troubles at work and enemies, I literally crawled to the Donskoy Monastery to pray. And she met an elder there, Hieromonk Daniel (Sarychev). He leisurely led the service, leisurely walked around the small church of the monastery and burned incense. He prayed on his knees with tears in his eyes before the miraculous Donskaya. After the service, I took the risk of turning to the elder with a request to pray for me. She described the situation and heard the answer: “Pray to the martyr Tryphon. It protects from enemies. And Daniil of Moscow." Arriving home, I began to look in the book “All the Temples of Moscow” and discovered a church where there was an icon with particles of the relics of this saint. And I went there. Later I heard Father Daniel’s story from the pulpit. He talked about how he was looking for a job when he was young. After serving the prayer service martyr. Tryphon, he returned home. Imagine his surprise when he saw an envelope with an invitation to a vacancy on his desk. True, then he decided to go to study. Stories like this are very inspiring. Now I try to turn to this saint more often. And he is very quick to help, he hears quickly. How joyful my soul is from his miracles! In Moscow, on Trifonovskaya Street, there is a small temple, ancient, white stone, in honor of the martyr. It was once large, but after the revolution two of its side-chapels were blown up. The main one - this same old white stone - temple was defended. And here, after a long break, services resumed. Although even now they take place only on Saturdays and Sundays, the martyr Tryphon always hears those who come to him, who turn to him in prayer. The clergy of the temple say that St. Trifon helps to find a job and solve housing problems. And also - to find the lost. Moreover, many cases of such help from the saint to people have been recorded. Stories from contemporaries Natalia:
On February 14, the Church honors the memory of the holy martyr Tryphon, especially beloved in Rus' and known for his ambulance and answer to our prayers. The holy martyr Tryphon was born in one of the regions of Asia Minor - Phrygia, near the city of Apamea in the village of Kampsada. He lived in the 3rd century. His parents instilled in him the love of God early childhood. Thanks to this, while remaining a simple shepherd of geese, he very early received from God the grace to heal people and animals and cast out unclean spirits. It so happened that a furious demon possessed the daughter of Emperor Gordian. Nobody could help her. One day the demon shouted: “Only Tryphon is able to drive me out!” The emperor immediately sent to look for Tryphon everywhere. He was found while he was peacefully herding geese. The 17-year-old boy was brought to Rome. By the power of prayer, he cast out the demon and forced him to appear before the inhabitants in the form of a disgusting black dog and admit that, being an instrument of Satan, the father of all evil, neither he nor his minions have any power over those who know and believe in the One God, but they receive power only over those who do not believe in God and the Son of God and live indulging their own lusts. The grateful emperor generously gave gifts to Tryphon, and the saint, returning home, distributed gifts to the poor. There he went about his business again in peace, working miracles and glorifying God. Helping all those suffering, Tryphon called everyone to faith in Jesus Christ, by whose grace he healed them. At the beginning of the Decius persecution (250), the prefect of the East Aquilinus was informed about the saint as a dangerous spreader of Christianity. Tryphon himself surrendered himself into the hands of the soldiers sent for him and joyfully appeared before the court in Nicaea, during which he fearlessly confessed his faith. He was subjected to severe torture, tied to a pole and beaten for three hours with sticks, his body was torn with iron hooks, his wounds were burned with fire, he was tied to a horse and forced to run after him barefoot in the cold, he was driven around the city with iron nails driven into his feet. Saint Tryphon bravely endured all the tortures, without uttering a single groan, firmly preserving his faith. The saint endured all the tortures with joy, praying for his executioners and exhorting them to turn to the true God. Suddenly, during one of the tortures, a crown of flowers and precious stones descended from the sky onto his head. Then Aquilinus, helpless and disgraced, ordered Tryphon to be beheaded outside the city walls. But even before the executioner struck with the deadly sword, the holy martyr betrayed his soul to God. Nicene Christians hastened to honor his priceless remains, but the saint appeared to them and revealed that he must return to his homeland. The holy martyr Tryphon was buried in Kampsad and there he performed many miracles over the centuries. Subsequently, the relics of Saint Tryphon were transferred to Constantinople, and then to Rome. There is a legend that during the reign of Tsar Ivan the Terrible, during the royal hunt, the king’s favorite gyrfalcon flew away. The Tsar ordered falconer Trifon Patrikeev to find the bird that had flown away. Falconer Tryfon traveled around the surrounding forests, but to no avail. On the third day, tired of a long search, he stopped near Moscow, in a place now called Maryina Roshcha, and, exhausted, lay down to rest, having fervently prayed before his patron saint, the martyr Tryphon, asking him for help. In a dream, he saw a young man on a white horse holding the royal gyrfalcon, and this young man said: “Take the missing bird, ride with God to the king and do not be sad about anything.” Having woken up, the falconer actually saw a gyrfalcon nearby on a pine tree. He immediately took him to the king and told him about the miraculous help he received from the holy martyr Tryphon. After some time, on the spot where the saint’s appearance took place, the falconer Tryphon Patrikeev built a chapel, and then a church in the name of the holy martyr Tryphon. Holy Martyr TRIFON (†ca. 250) Holy Martyr Tryphon was born in one of the regions of Asia Minor - Phrygia (modern Turkey), near the city of Apamea, in the village of Kampsada. His parents were simple and pious peasants. As a child, he tended geese and received no education. But Saint Tryphon, while still a child, was granted the gift of miracles by the Lord: he cast out demons, healed illnesses, and with his prayer performed many other good deeds.Once, the inhabitants of Saint Tryphon’s native village were saved by him from hunger: by the power of his childhood prayer, the saint forced the harmful insects that were destroying the crops to leave. Based on this miracle, the Church has established a special rite of prayer to Saint Tryphon, which is performed when pests attack crops or plantings. Saint Tryphon became especially famous exorcism of a demon from the daughter of the Roman emperor Gordian (238-244) . A demon possessed the young, intelligent and beautiful Princess and tormented her severely. One day he shouted that only Tryphon could drive him out. The emperor ordered to find the miracle worker and bring him to Rome. At that time Saint Tryphon was 17 years old. When the saint approached Rome at a distance of three days' journey, the evil spirit could not bear his approach and left the daughter of Gordian. Saint Tryphon was brought before the emperor, surrounded by court nobility. He begged the saint to show the demon with his own eyes, wanting to make sure that the young man had really healed the princess. After a solitary prayer to God and strict fasting within six days, Saint Tryphon ordered the unclean spirit to appear visibly to the emperor and his entourage. In the Chetiy-Menaia of St. Demetrius of Rostov (†1709) this is narrated as follows: When Gordian's retinue with the young man was still on the way, the last convulsive seizure happened to the emperor's daughter. The devil in the girl spoke again. - I can not! - he moaned annoyingly, shaking his young body. “I can’t be here anymore,” Tryphon is coming here! On the third day he will be here... I'm leaving! And the unclean spirit, forced by the will of God for the second time to tell what he would prefer to remain silent about, came out of the emperor’s daughter. Eyewitnesses claimed that the girl instantly brightened her face and mind, and from that time on her grace and beauty returned to her. And Tryphon, as was declared the adversary, came to the palace on the third day, where he was greeted very joyfully and with honor. But the emperor remained doubtful: this whole story seemed too mysterious, it did not lend itself to his sober and practical mind. And Gordian turned to the saint with these words: “I see,” he said, “that Fortune is favorable to you, young man.” My daughter is healthy! She is as cheerful as ever, and even, to my surprise, more cheerful than before. It turns out you are a miracle worker! “It’s not me,” Tryphon humbly objected, “but my God, the Lord...” - Take your time, young man! - Gordian raised his hand in warning. “You shouldn’t interrupt your elders, and now, besides, the emperor is in front of you.” Tell me, can you fulfill one of my requests if it does not contradict your faith? - Yes, Emperor. I am listening to you. - Wonderful. - Gordian smiled, the young man aroused his sympathy. - Then show us the spirit that dared to disturb the princess’s peace by entering her womb. I want to see it with my own eyes and show it to others. - Why do you need this, Emperor? “So that no one,” Gordian looked around the assembled courtiers with an eloquent glance, “no one has any doubt that it was you who cured my daughter.” This is in our interests, young man,” he added quietly. “Be it your way,” Tryphon agreed. “I will fulfill your will, but for this I need some time.” - You will have it... After six days of solitude, spent in fasting and prayer, Tryphon, who had increased his spiritual strength, appeared before the throne of the emperor, declaring his readiness. Gordian nodded silently and smiled again, this time not as confidently as a week ago, when he decided on his request. His heart told him that the performance would not be pleasant. The next morning, as soon as the sun rose, the emperor and his entourage gathered for an unprecedented spectacle, and Tryphon did not disappoint their expectations. Filled with the Holy Spirit, he, contemplating the spirit of malice invisible to others as he was, directly ordered him to appear before those gathered in the flesh or, as they say now, to materialize, which does not entirely accurately reflect reality, for spirits are already material. “I tell you, unclean spirit, in the name of my Lord Jesus Christ, appear before us in person, revealing your essence in one of your vile images!” And then, as if out of nowhere, a creepy black dog with fiery eyes appeared in front of the quiet crowd. His heavy head with his tongue hanging out dragged along the ground and it seemed that the very air around him thickened and froze, filled with a stench. Deathly silence reigned. Now only Tryphon could speak. “Who sent you, demon, to this place,” asked the saint, “and how did you dare to enter the maiden created in the image of God, being so ugly and weak?” “I was sent by my father, Satan,” answered the devil, “the chief of all evil and his minion, who is in hell.” From him I received orders to torture the king’s daughter. “Who gave you the power to encroach on God’s creation?” Explain this to everyone in detail and clearly. Tryphon offered to look deeper, revealing to the emperor and his synclite a terrible secret, which not all people know about, and the devil, forced by the power of God, had to tell the truth: “We have no power over those who know God and believe in His Only Begotten Son, Christ.” We run away from these people in fear; and only when we are allowed to do so do we inflict temptations on them from the outside, testing the strength of their faith. It’s a different matter with those who don’t believe in God—the dog managed to raise his head and flash hot coals of his eyes into the thick of the crowd. - Obedient to their whims and passions, they do things that please us - and then we receive complete power over them. These people fall into idolatry by making an idol for themselves. They are proud of themselves, slander, envy their neighbors and engage in all kinds of sorcery. With such and similar in spirit deeds, they entangle themselves in networks of lies and thereby alienate themselves from God, their Creator. They follow our path without permission, and therefore, together with us, they accept eternal torment. The black dog fell silent and sank, petrified on the spot. His appearance was still terrifying, and his posture expressed submission. At this point, the memorable event for those present ended - Tryphon sent the devil back to hell. An involuntary revelation of the spirit of darkness, the mere contemplation of which would have made the most courageous soul tremble, led many to Christ that day, and the believers were confirmed in the truth and glorified God. Having generously gifted the saint, the emperor sent him home in peace, and Tryphon, barely leaving the gates of Gordian’s domain, made many beggars happy with royal gifts. On the way, he gave away everything and returned lightly to his fatherland, continuing to lead a pure and immaculate life there in the service of God and his neighbors. And then, having matured, he began to wander, preaching and healing the sick along the way... In 249 he ascended the royal throne Emperor Decius (249-251). With the support of the Roman Senate, Decius tried to strengthen the administrative apparatus of the Empire. In addition, he decided to tighten the state cult of veneration of the “genius” of the emperor, declaring it mandatory for all subjects of Rome. Other cults and religious communities were prohibited, and the open profession or preaching of any other religion was equated to state crimes (250 AD). This led to massive repressions against followers of various Eastern cults. Members of Christian religious communities suffered especially cruelly at this time. It is difficult to say how many Christians died during this period, but they left this life in the thousands. They were killed mercilessly, tortured endlessly. The angels did not have time to receive their souls... The governor of Decius in Asia Minor was someone Aquiline. He was informed that Saint Tryphon was boldly preaching Christianity and leading many to Baptism. The hunt for him immediately began. Hearing that the royal servants were looking for him, Saint Tryphon did not take refuge, but gave himself into the hands of the persecutors. Brought to trial before Aquilina in the city of Nicaea, he boldly confessed his faith in Christ. Aquilinus was unable to intimidate young Tryphon with any threats. Then the eparch ordered to tie the hands of the holy martyr, hang him on a tree and beat him for three hours. During the beating, the torturer did not hear a single groan from the martyr. After this, Saint Tryphon was thrown into prison. After some time, Aquilinus once again used threats and persuasion, and then, seeing the futility of his efforts, subjected the martyr to new tortures. The body of Saint Tryphon was tormented with iron hooks, the wounds were burned with fire, iron nails were driven into his feet and led around the city. And when the martyr was forced to follow the horse on which the eparch went hunting, Saint Tryphon sang the following verses from the psalms of the prophet David: “Make my steps in Thy paths, so that my steps may not move... Direct my steps, O Lord, according to Thy word, and let not all iniquity possess me.”(Ps. 16:5; 118:133). He often repeated the words of the First Martyr, Holy Archdeacon Stephen: “Lord, do not impute this sin to them”(Acts 7:60). The Lord strengthened His chosen one, and he bravely endured all the torture. During the torment, an Angel appeared before the saint with a precious crown in his hands. Seeing this, the tormentors were frightened, but Aquilinus became even more embittered. The next day he continued the torture, after which he sentenced the martyr Tryphon to be beheaded by the sword. Before his death, the saint thanked God, who strengthened him in his suffering. The Ancient Life conveys the following words of the holy martyr to God: “...Receive my soul in peace, and everyone like me, Your servant, will be remembered, and in my memory they will bring Holy Sacrifice to You, hear from the height of Your Shrine, and look down on them from Your Holy Dwelling, giving them abundant and imperishable gifts, for You are the only Good and Generous Giver forever and ever.” The saint departed to the Lord before his venerable head was cut off. Christians wanted to bury the body of the martyr in the city of Nicaea - the place of his suffering. But Saint Tryphon, in a vision, ordered his body to be transferred to his homeland, to the village of Kampsada. The will of the holy martyr was fulfilled. Subsequently the relics of Saint Tryphon were transferred to Constantinople, and then to Rome. The holy martyr Tryphon enjoys great veneration in the Russian Orthodox Church. There is a legend that under Tsar Ivan the Terrible (1533-1584) During the hunt, the king's favorite gyrfalcon flew away. The Tsar ordered falconer Trifon Patrikeev to find the flown away bird and threatened him with death for failure to comply with the order. Falconer Tryfon traveled around the surrounding forests, but to no avail. On the third day, tired of a long search, he lay down to rest, diligently asking for help from his patron, the holy martyr Tryphon. In a dream, he saw a young man on a white horse, holding the royal gyrfalcon in his hand. This young man said: “Take the missing bird, go with God to the king and don’t be sad about anything.” Waking up, the falconer saw the gyrfalcon he was looking for nearby on a pine tree. He immediately took him to the king and told him about the miraculous help he received from the holy martyr Tryphon. Soon, on the spot where the saint appeared, the falconer Tryphon Patrikeev built a chapel, and then a church in the name of the holy martyr Tryphon. Currently, the head of the holy martyr is kept in the city Kotor (Montenegro), in the chapel next to the Cathedral of St. Tryphon.
Part of the relics was brought from there to Russia in 1803. In 1819, this shrine was enclosed in three reliquaries in the icon of the holy martyr Tryphon, which was located in the church built in his honor in Naprudny. Now this icon is in the temple in honor of the Sign Holy Mother of God , near the Rizhsky railway station in Moscow, not far from the place of the appearance of St. Tryphon to the falconer. When the church was closed in 1931, the icon, along with particles of relics, was transferred to Temple of the Sign Icon Mother of God in Pereyaslavskaya Sloboda . Another icon with a particle of the relics of St. Tryphon is located in the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God " Unexpected joy» in Maryina Roshcha . Part of the relics of the martyr Tryphon is located in the Holy Trinity Kitaevsky Monastery in Kyiv. During his lifetime, Tryphon responded to the slightest requests and troubles. And now at the Throne of God he prays for us. Sometimes people say - well, this is such a trifle, such an everyday misfortune, how can one turn to God with prayer about it? But the Lord hears all our prayers and knows about them even before we ourselves begin to pray. And the martyr Tryphon helps us. Parishioners of the Church of St. martyr Tryphon can talk for hours about the miracles that are performed through prayer to the saint. By prayer with faith. After all, faith does not come from miracles, but miracles come from faith that the Lord is near, that he will help. Saint Tryphon was revered in Muscovite Rus' as healer, patron of hunters and fishermen. Troparion, tone 4:

So, when the fields in the vicinity of his native village were attacked by insects that destroyed the harvest and doomed the inhabitants to starvation, Tryphon drove them out by the power of his prayer, and as payment he called on his fellow countrymen to accept the Christian faith. The story is widely known of how 16-year-old Tryphon cast out demons from the daughter of the Roman Emperor Gordian. In response to the emperor’s request to reveal the demon, he, by order of Tryphon, appeared before Caesar in the form of a black dog with fiery eyes and spoke about his power in the bodies of people overwhelmed by sinful passions. Many of those present at this miracle believed in the power of the Savior. Soon after the next emperor, Decius Trajan, came to power, a new mass persecution of Christians began. Tryphon, who became famous for many miracles and attracted many people to True Faith, captured and tortured so that he would renounce his faith in Christ, but he remained faithful to the Savior.
