What prayers to read during Lent. Orthodox prayer for well-being

Lent is the longest and strictest of all. This period is aimed not only at physical, but also at spiritual cleansing. To prevent religious tradition from turning into a regular diet, pray daily to the Lord and the saints.

Lent is a preparation for Easter. During this period, believers can achieve unity with God and cleanse their souls of sins. Many people mistakenly think that during fasting they simply need to give up prohibited foods. However, without prayer requests and performing godly deeds, fasting is a common diet. Don't forget to attend church and try to devote more time to prayer than usual.

The meaning of Lent

The main meaning of Lent is not to give up meat and dairy products, but to cleanse the soul. That is why the church recommends abstaining not only from certain foods, but also from usual entertainment.

During fasting, it is recommended to spend less time in front of the TV or on the Internet. Entertainment programs and meaningless information only clog our lives. Free hours are best spent in church, where you can pray and repent of your sins.

During this period, you can rethink your life and think about your purpose. During fasting, you will be able to look into your heart and understand what you really want from life.

Take care not only of cleansing your body, but also your soul. Get rid of negative thoughts and try to let go of old grievances. Imagine that every day you have the opportunity to start your life with clean slate, but for this it is necessary to say goodbye to the past.

Morning prayer during Lent

Orthodox believers know that it is necessary to begin every morning with prayer, especially during fasting. With its help, you can create a positive attitude and protect yourself from any troubles.

“Lord God, be merciful to me, a sinner. Cleanse my soul from sins, deliver me from evil thoughts. Protect me from enemies and their atrocities. I believe in Your generosity and kindness that You give to us. Glory to You, God. Amen!"

Evening prayer during Lent

“Lord God, creator of all life on earth and the King of Heaven, forgive me for the sins I have committed during the day in word or deed. Even in a dream, I, God’s servant, do not lose faith in You. I believe that You will save me from sins and cleanse my soul. Every day I hope for Your protection. Hear my prayer, answer my requests. Amen".

Before going to bed, do not forget to pray to your Guardian Angel:

“Guardian Angel, protector of my soul and my body. If I have sinned this day, deliver me from my sins. Don't let the Lord God be angry with me. Pray for me, God’s servant (name), before the Lord God, ask him for the forgiveness of my sins and protect me from committing evil. Amen".

Prayer for forgiveness of sins

During Lent, every believer must repent for their sins - this is an important part of spiritual cleansing. Don't forget to say your prayer every day.

“I, servant of God (name), turn to You, Lord, and with all my heart I ask You to forgive my sins. Have mercy on me, Heavenly King, deliver me from mental torment and self-torture. I will turn to You, Son of God. You died for our sins and You rose again to live forever. I hope for Your help and ask you to bless me. Forever You are my Savior. Amen!"

Main prayer for Lent

Short prayer of Ephraim the Syrian - main prayer for the period of Lent. It is said on weekdays, at the end of each Lenten service. With its help, you can repent, rid your soul of sins, and also protect yourself and your loved ones from illnesses and committing evil.

“Lord God, Lord of my days. Do not allow the spirit of inaction, sadness, self-love to come to me. Grant the spirit of sanity and humility, love and patience to me, Your servant (name). Lord God, punish me for my sins, but do not punish my neighbor for them. Amen!"

In everything related to prayer and pious life, the Lord Jesus Christ, the apostles and saints can serve as an example for us. The Gospel says that Christ prayed in solitude for several hours and even throughout the whole night. The Apostle Paul called for prayer without ceasing, that is, all the time. Are there any restrictions on the duration of prayer?

You can pray to God almost everywhere:

  • in the temple
  • where they eat
  • At work
  • and even on the way

At home they read home prayers (morning, evening, before or after eating food). With the blessing of the priest, morning prayers can be read on the way to work. In the office, you can pray before and after the work day.

During services in the temple, believers together perform public (otherwise known as church) prayer.

To pray in church alone, you need to come outside the service, purchase and light candles. It is not necessary to light them: the ministers will light them before the start of the service. Then you need to venerate the icon of the day or holiday - it lies on the lectern (a special inclined table) in the middle of the temple - as well as to the shrines that may be in the temple: revered icons, relics of saints. After this, you can find a place to read silently (whisper) any prayer that you know by heart, or pray in your own words.

How many times a day should Orthodox Christians pray?

Prayer is time dedicated to God. There should be such a time every day.

  • in the morning,
  • In the evening,
  • before and after meals,
  • before starting and after completing something (for example, work or study)
  • in order to first ask God for blessings, and in the end to thank Him.

In addition, it is important in the temple for performing church prayer and receiving. If necessary, in case of special needs or life circumstances, you can pray privately (at home in front of icons or in church between services) to the saints or heavenly powers, so that they will intercede for the person praying before the Lord.

Time for reading Orthodox prayers in church and at home

In ancient monasteries, nine long services were performed per day, and between them the monks alone read psalms or said. Night was considered a particularly fertile time for solitary prayer.

Modern laity do this in the morning at home, and in the evening upon returning home. If a person is weak or has little time, then instead of the morning and evening rules, he can read St. Seraphim of Sarov during the day.

It is advisable to discuss the duration of morning and evening prayers with the priest to whom the parishioner regularly confesses.

On Saturday evenings and on the eve of church holidays, one should attend the all-night vigil in the church, and on Sunday mornings and holidays - the Liturgy.

During They go to church to pray more often: in the first four days they try not to miss evening services- Great Compline with the Canon of St. Andrew of Crete is celebrated on them. You should also try to attend as many services as possible during Holy Week, which precedes Easter. During Bright Week, the Liturgy is celebrated daily., and believers strive to visit it in order to partake of the Holy Mysteries of Christ not only on Sunday, but also on weekdays.

Morning prayer time

Morning prayers are read at home, immediately upon waking. Having woken up, you need to stand in front of the icons and begin to read prayers by heart or according to the prayer book.

Evening prayer time

Evening prayers are read at home at the end of the day or before bed. The evening rule is not recommended to be postponed until later, because the later, the stronger the fatigue and the more difficult it is to concentrate.

Just before going to sleep, already lying in bed, they say: “In Your hands, Lord my God, I commend my spirit, You save me, You have mercy on me and grant me eternal life.”

Prayer all day long

The Orthodox Church does not set strict times for prayers. We must strive to pray constantly. This, first of all, means constantly remembering God and from time to time, if possible, turning to Him during the day with short prayers (for example, the Jesus prayer “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner” or a short prayer of gratitude “Glory To Thee, our God, glory to Thee!”).

Continuous Prayer

You can read short prayers continuously throughout the day, repeating the same prayer many times in a row and counting the number of repetitions using the rosary. This is how the Jesus Prayer is usually read. However, for such a prayer you must take the priest's blessing, And the number of repetitions is strictly regulated.

There are many restrictions on continuous prayer; it cannot be read uncontrolled.

The Monk Ambrose of Optina ordered his spiritual children to read the Jesus Prayer only out loud, because reading to oneself can cause strong emotional sensations and lead to falling into delusion. Prelest means self-deception, even to the point of mental insanity.

How long should prayer be?

Durationprayers are not regulated by rules.

  • What is most important is the focus on prayer, not the duration or number of prayers.
  • You need to pray slowly, thinking about every word.
  • The number of prayers should correspond to the time we can devote to them.

The Lord said, “I want mercy, not sacrifice” (Matthew 9:13), therefore, if you lack time or are very tired, it is permissible to shorten the prayer rule in order to read it with concentration.

Prayer for quick help that will protect you from trouble,
will help in misfortune and show the way to a better life

INTRODUCTION

Our world is like an ocean in a terrible storm, especially in these times of crisis. We are small chips in it, endlessly tossing waves across the water.

Failures and lack of money, uncertainty about the future and our strengths, fears for our children and loved ones - this ninth wave covers us almost constantly. And no, no, yes, we will feel how despair and hopelessness are squeezing our heart with icy tentacles. And at this moment we want to ask for help, and we look around, but everywhere we see the same people, wounded and beaten by life, who themselves do not know what to do.

And then, as if on a whim, we raise our gaze upward to Heaven. And we begin to talk about our affairs, about our lives, asking you to help us. Because, no matter who we are, no matter who we believe in words, we know in the depths of our souls that there is a God who never forgets us, and there is the Mother of God who loves us, and the saints who work for us. us before the face of the Lord.

That’s why we turn to them in the most difficult moments of our lives, ask them for protection and help, ask them to guide us on the right path and give us strength to survive difficult times.

And we express all our requests in prayer - sincere and fervent. And if we do not know the words of prayer, then we speak on our own, in our own words, all the same, the Lord and His helpers will hear us.

But there are prayers whose power is increased by time. Millions of people before us addressed and after us will address these words to Heaven. They are like medicine that needs to be used for acute pain. The request for help that is inherent in them goes straight to God, and we receive an answer immediately.

This book contains very necessary and very effective prayers that will help you in any difficult moments of your life.

Prayer to Saint John the Merciful, Patriarch of Alexandria

Saint John of God, merciful protector of the orphans and those in misfortune! We resort to you and pray to you, Thy servants (names), as the quick patron of all who seek consolation from God in troubles and sorrows. Don’t stop praying to the Lord for everyone who flows to you with faith! You, having been filled with Christ’s love and goodness, appeared like a wonderful palace of the virtue of mercy and acquired for yourself the name “Merciful.” You were like a river, constantly flowing with generous mercies and abundantly watering all who thirst. We believe that after you moved from earth to heaven, the gift of sowing grace increased in you and that you became an inexhaustible vessel of all goodness. By your intercession and intercession before God, create “all kinds of joy,” so that everyone who comes running to you will find peace and tranquility: grant them comfort in temporary sorrows and help in everyday needs, instill in them the hope of eternal rest in the Kingdom of Heaven. In your life on earth, you were a refuge for everyone in every trouble and need, for the offended and ailing; not a single one of those who came to you and asked you for mercy was deprived of your grace. Likewise now, reigning with Christ in heaven, show all those who worship before your honest icon and pray for help and intercession. Not only did you yourself show mercy to the helpless, but you also raised the hearts of others to the consolation of the weak and to the charity of the poor. Move even now the hearts of the faithful to intercede for the orphans, comfort the mourners and reassure the needy. May the gifts of mercy not become scarce in them, and, moreover, may there be peace and joy in them (and in this house that looks after the suffering) in the Holy Spirit - to the glory of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer of the Persecuted by People (Compiled by Saint Ignatius Brianchaninov)

I thank You, Lord and my God, for everything that has happened to me! I thank You for all the sorrows and temptations that You sent me to cleanse those defiled by sins, to heal my soul and body, ulcerated by sins! Have mercy and save those instruments that You used to heal me: those people who insulted me. Bless them in this age and the next! Credit to them as virtue what they did for me! Give them abundant rewards from your eternal treasures.

What did I bring to You? What are acceptable sacrifices? I brought only sins, only violations of Your most Divine commandments. Forgive me, Lord, forgive the guilty one before You and before people! Forgive the unrequited! Grant me to be convinced and sincerely admit that I am a sinner! Grant me to reject crafty excuses! Grant me repentance! Grant me contrition of heart! To you alone belongs the glory! My only asset is the shame of my face and the silence of my lips. Standing before Thy Last Judgment in my wretched prayer, I do not find in myself a single good deed, not a single dignity, and I stand, only enveloped from everywhere by the countless multitude of my sins, as if by a thick cloud and mist, with only one consolation in my soul: with hope in the unlimited Your mercy and goodness. Prayer to the Prophet Elijah

You can pray to the Holy Glorious Prophet Elijah during times of rainlessness, drought, in the rain, for changes in the weather, as well as for successful trading, from hunger and in cases when you want to receive a prophecy, prophetic dreams.

The great and glorious prophet of God, Elijah, for the sake of your zeal for the glory of the Lord God Almighty, not patient to see the idolatry and wickedness of the sons of Israel, the lawless king Aha-av, who denounced the lawbreaking king Aha-ab and, as punishment for those, a three-year famine on the land of Israel, through your prayer from the Lord, having asked the widow of Zarephat in the famine wonderfully nourished and her son died through your prayer, resurrected, after the passage of the time of famine, the people of Israel were gathered on Mount Carmel for apostasy and wickedness, reproaching the same fire for your sacrifice from heaven, and by this miracle Israel turned to the Lord, the cold prophets of Baal were put to shame and died, and yet with prayer he again resolved the sky and asked for abundant rain on the earth, and the people of Israel rejoiced! To you, wonderful servant of God, we zealously resort to sin and humility, in the absence of rain and in the heat of tomia: we confess that we are unworthy of the mercy and blessings of God, but we are worthy more than the fierce punishments of His wrath: for we do not walk in the fear of God and in the ways of the commandments Him, but in the lusts of our depraved hearts, and without shame we have created every form of sin: for our iniquities have surpassed our head, and we are not worthy to appear before the face of God and to behold heaven: we also humbly confess that for this reason heaven was closed and like brass was created, First of all, our hearts were closed with mercy and true love: for this reason, the earth hardened and became barren, because the fruits of good deeds were not brought to our Lord: for this reason, there was no rain, lower dew, like tears of tenderness and the life-giving dew of the thought of God were not imams: for this Because of this, every grain and grass has withered away, as if every good feeling had dried up in us: for this reason the air has been darkened, as if our mind has been darkened with cold thoughts and our heart has been defiled with lawless lusts. We confess that we are unworthy of you, the prophet of God, to beg: you, having been servile to us as a man, became like an angel in your life, and like an incorporeal being, you were caught up in heaven, while we, with our cold thoughts and deeds, became like dumb cattle, and created our soul like flesh: you surprised angels and men with fasting and vigil, but we, indulging in intemperance and lust, are likened to senseless cattle: you were constantly burning with the utmost zeal for the glory of God, but we are about our glory It is an evil shame to confess the Creator and Lord negligently, to confess His venerable name: you have eradicated wickedness and evil customs, but we have served the spirit of this age, observing the customs of the world more than the commandments of God and the statutes of the church. What sin and untruth have we not created, and so our iniquities have exhausted God’s patience! Moreover, the just Lord was righteously angry with us, and in His anger punished us. Moreover, knowing your great boldness before the Lord, and trusting in your love for the human race, we dare to pray to you, most praiseworthy prophet: be merciful to us, unworthy and indecent, beg the great-gifted and all-generous God, so that he will not be completely angry with us and May it not destroy us with our iniquities, but may abundant and peaceful rain fall on the thirsty and parched earth, may it give it fruitfulness and the goodness of the air: bow with your effective intercession to the mercy of the Heavenly King, not for us for the sake of the sinful and nasty, but for the sake of His chosen servants , who did not bow their knees to the Baal of this world, for the sake of gentle babies, for the sake of dumb cattle and birds of the air, who suffer for our iniquity and are melted away by hunger, heat and thirst. Ask us with your favorable prayers from the Lord for the spirit of repentance and heartfelt tenderness, meekness and self-control, the spirit of love and patience, the spirit of the fear of God and piety, so that, having returned from the path of wickedness to the right path of virtue, we walk in the light of God’s commandments and achieve the good things promised to us , by the good will of the beginningless Father, by the love of His only begotten Son and by the grace of the All-Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.

Prayer for the sanctification of every thing

You should sprinkle things with holy water three times and read:

To the Creator and Creator of the human race, the Giver of spiritual grace, the Giver of eternal salvation, You, Lord Himself, ate Your Holy Spirit with the highest blessing on this thing, as if armed with the power of heavenly intercession, those who want to use it will be helpful for bodily salvation and intercession and help, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Prayer in a situation when things and business are going badly

Lord, do not reprove me with Your wrath; do not punish me with Your wrath. As Thy arrows have struck me, and Thou hast strengthened Thy hand upon me. There is no healing in my flesh from the face of Your wrath, there is no peace in my bones from the face of my sin. For my iniquities have exceeded my head, for a heavy burden weighs upon me. My wounds have grown stale and rotten because of my madness. I suffered and sloshed to the end, walking around complaining all day. For my body is filled with reproach and there is no healing in my flesh. I would become embittered and humbled to death, roaring from the sighing of my heart. Lord, before You all my desire and my sighing are not hidden from You. My heart is confused, leave me my strength, and the light of my eyes, and that one will not be with me. My friends and my sincere ones are right near me and stasha, and my neighbors are far away from me, stasha and in need, seeking my soul, and seeking evil for me, vain verbs and teaching to flatterers all day long. As if I were deaf and did not hear, and because I was dumb and did not open my mouth. And as a man he would not hear, nor would he have reproach in his mouth. For in You, O Lord, I have trusted; You will hear, O Lord my God. As if he said: “Let my enemies never make me happy; and never can my feet move, but you speak against me.” As if I am ready for wounds, and my illness is before me. For I will proclaim my iniquity and take care of my sin. My enemies live and have become stronger than me, and have multiplied, hating me without truth. Those who repay me evil with a cart of good have slandered me, driving away goodness. Do not forsake me, O Lord my God, do not depart from me. Here come to my help, Lord of my salvation.

Appendix ABOUT PRAYER

What is prayer?

Modern man, even the most religious, the most “churched,” quite often gets confused in matters of prayer. Some of us are sure that only canonical (i.e., taken from the Prayer Book) prayers help achieve the desired result. Others think that only fervent prayer, a request addressed to God in their own words, will help get rid of illnesses and any misfortunes. Still others do not consider it necessary to bother themselves with prayers at all: they say, the Lord already knows everything, sees everything, and will give each of us the necessary help.

So what is prayer?

Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh said this:

…it is very important to remember that prayer is a meeting, it is a relationship, and a deep relationship into which neither we nor God can be forced. And the fact that God can make His presence obvious to us or leave us with a feeling of His absence is already part of this living, real relationship...

Prayer is like a meeting. A meeting with the Mother of God, with the saints to whom we pray, a meeting with God. But we just have to admit to ourselves: do we want this meeting? Probably, almost each of us, asking ourselves a similar question, will answer it in the affirmative. Yes, we want! Our life is sometimes so complex, difficult, and confusing that we cannot cope with the problems ourselves. We need help from above. And even children understand this.

How should you pray?

You can pray in your own words; you can pray with a short prayer formula; You can use what are called “ready-made prayers.” What's better? What is healthier for our soul? How to make the right choice?

Let's talk a little about each type of prayer in more detail.

Canonical prayers

You can easily find canonical prayers, or so-called “ready-made prayers” for all occasions, in any Prayer Book. The canonical collections of prayers are arranged very conveniently: they contain Morning and Evening prayers, prayers to the Lord, prayers to the Mother of God and prayers to the saints. Some expanded Prayer Books also contain akathists, troparia, kontakia and magnifications for the Feasts of the Lord, the feasts of the Mother of God, saints and icons of the Mother of God. Which Prayer Book to choose depends only on you. At first, it is best to opt for the simplest, small Prayer Book.

How to use the Prayer Book? Of course, you can simply find this or that prayer in the table of contents: as a rule, it is immediately clear from the headings for what occasion the prayer is intended (“for the living,” “for the dead,” “for illnesses,” “for fear,” etc.). d.).

But this is probably not the most important thing. If we summarize the entire centuries-old experience of the Orthodox Church, in essence, it will immediately become obvious that you can pray to any saint, in front of any icon, as long as your prayer comes from the heart!

In the book “Learn to Pray!” Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh wrote:

We have a rich selection of prayers that were suffered by ascetics of the faith and born in them by the Holy Spirit... It is important to find and know a sufficient number of them in order to find the appropriate prayers at the right time. It's about about learning by heart a sufficient number of significant passages from the psalms or from the prayers of the saints; Each of us is more sensitive to one passage or another. Mark for yourself those passages that touch you deeply, that are meaningful to you, that express something - about sin, or about bliss in God, or about struggle - that you already know from experience. Memorize these passages, because some day when you are so discouraged, so deep in despair that you cannot summon anything personal, no personal words, into your soul, you will find these passages floating to the surface and appearing before you, as a gift from God, as a gift to the Church, as a gift of holiness, replenishing the decline of our strength. Then we really need the prayers that we have memorized so that they have become part of us...

Unfortunately, too often we poorly grasp the meaning of the canonical prayers. An inexperienced person, picking up a Prayer Book, as a rule, does not understand many of the words in it. Well, what, for example, does the word “create” mean? Or the word "imam"? If you have an innate verbal sense, then “translating” incomprehensible words will not be so difficult for you. The word “create” is clearly derived from the word “creation”, that is, creation, creation; “create” means “create, create.” And “imam” is an old version of the word “I have,” and they have the same root. Only after you understand the meaning of the prayer texts can you begin to pray directly, otherwise your appeal to higher powers will be just a set of incomprehensible words for you. And, unfortunately, one cannot expect any effect from such a request.

Prayer in your own words

Quite often you can hear the following question: is it possible to pray in your own words? Of course you can! After all, we are all very different. It is easier for some to read “ready-made prayers,” while others are simply not currently able to fully understand the meaning of the canonical prayers, and therefore cannot use them.

This is what representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church say about prayers in their own words.

Every person has the right to pray in his own words, and there are many examples of this. We see this in church families when small children, imitating praying adults, raise their hands up, cross themselves, perhaps clumsily, take some books, babble some words. Metropolitan Nestor of Kamchatka in his book “My Kamchatka” recalls how he prayed as a child: “Lord, save me, my dad, my mom and my dog Landyshka.”

We know that priests pray for their children and their flock at home and in their cells. I know an example when a priest in the evening, after working day puts on clean clothes and simply, in his everyday words, grieves before the Lord for his flock, saying that some of them are in need, some are sick, others have been offended: “Lord, help them.”

Archimandrite Alexy (Polikarpov), abbot of the Moscow St. Danilov Monastery

Sometimes it’s good to say a few words in prayer, breathing with ardent faith and love for the Lord. Yes, not everyone can talk with God in other people’s words, not everyone can be children in faith and hope, but one must show one’s mind and say one’s good word from the heart; We somehow get used to other people’s words and grow cold...

...When the prayer words are convincing for you, then they will be convincing for God...

Saint righteous John Kronstadt

Sometimes, in order to address your fervent request to God, there is no need to resort to words. Prayer can be silent. Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh gives such an example in his sermons. One peasant sat in the church for a long time and silently looked at the icons. He did not have a rosary, his lips did not move. But when the priest asked him what he was doing, the peasant replied: “I look at Him, and He looks at me, and we both feel good.”

These are the prayers people say when they are desperate and sincerely believe in Heavenly help:

What to do, such mental melancholy, horror, I don’t want to live, there is no work, there is nothing, there is no meaning in life, a dead end in life. Help me, Lord!

Tatyana, Rostov-on-Don

In the name of the Lord our God, Jesus Christ, I ask you to pray for me and my family!!! I just can’t find a job, it’s not working out... God bless you!!!

Irina, St. Petersburg

Brief Prayer Invocation

You can also pray briefly throughout the day. prayer calls. First of all, this is the Jesus Prayer: “ Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner" This prayer in Orthodoxy is called the “prayer of stability.” Where did this name come from? The fact is that in the Jesus Prayer a person surrenders completely to the mercy of God, under His protection and intercession. According to the majority of Orthodox devotees, the Jesus Prayer sums up in a few words all the wisdom of the Gospels.

Prayer-appeals for help and protection to the saint whose name you bear are quite effective. It is best to contact your patron saints several times a day. There is also a short prayer for this.

Prayer addressed to the saint whose name you bear

Pray to God for me, holy servant of God (name), as I diligently resort to you, a quick helper and prayer book for my soul.

We turn to the Mother of God for protection in the following prayer:

Virgin Mary, Rejoice, Blessed Mary, the Lord is with Thee: blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, for thou hast given birth to the Savior of our souls.

If it’s difficult to remember the prayer right away, you can simply repeat to yourself from time to time:

Most Holy Theotokos, save us!

About time and attention in prayer

For a long time, it was recommended to read the prayer slowly, evenly, in order to “contain attention in the words.” Only when the prayer you want to offer to God is meaningful enough and means a lot to you, will you be able to “reach out” to the Lord. If you are inattentive to the words you say, if your own heart does not respond to the words of prayer, your requests will not reach God.

Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh said that when his father began to pray, he hung a sign on the door: “I’m home. But don’t try to knock, I won’t open it.” Bishop Anthony himself advised his parishioners, before starting prayer, to think about how much time they have, set an alarm clock and pray quietly until it rings. “It doesn’t matter,” he wrote, “how many prayers you manage to read during this time; It is important that you read them without being distracted or thinking about time.”

Prayer and feelings

But you should never confuse the words of a sincere prayer with a prayer that looks more like hysteria. Unfortunately, there is often an opinion among believers that only prayer with tears, in a raised voice, will achieve its goal. There is no need to shout to God about your problems and troubles, bursting into tears and shedding tears: He sees and hears everything perfectly. Falling into a hysterical state, a person no longer truly prays, but only uncontrollably splashes out emotions (often, by the way, devoid of objectivity and even negative).

Answered Prayer

Very often you can hear the following complaint: “I prayed and prayed, but all my prayers remained unanswered!”

For some reason, we are sure: all we have to do is start praying, and God is obliged to appear before us, pay attention to us, let us feel His presence, let us understand that He is listening to us attentively. Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh, recognized as the most outstanding theologian, wrote:

If it were possible to call God... mechanically, so to speak, force Him to a meeting just because we have appointed this very moment to meet with Him, then there would be neither a meeting nor a relationship. Relationships should begin and develop in mutual freedom. … We complain that He does not make His presence evident in the few minutes we devote to Him throughout the day; but what can we say about the remaining twenty-three and a half hours, when God can knock on our door as much as He wants, and we answer: “Sorry, I’m busy,” or we don’t answer at all, because we don’t even hear Him knocking on our door? heart, our mind, our consciousness or conscience, our life. So: we have no right to complain about the absence of God, because we ourselves are absent much more!

There is one amazing story in the book of Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh:

About twenty-five years ago, shortly after I became a priest, I was sent to serve in a nursing home before Christmas. There was an old woman there who later died at the age of one hundred and two. She came up to me after the first service and said: “Father Anthony, I would like to get advice about prayer.” ...I then asked her: “What is your problem?” And my old lady answered: “For fourteen years now I have been repeating the Jesus Prayer almost continuously and I have never felt God’s presence.” And then I really, out of simplicity, told her what I was thinking: “If you talk all the time, when will God insert a word?” She asked: “What should I do?” And I said: “After morning breakfast, go to your room, tidy it up, make the chair more comfortable, so that behind its back there are all the dark corners that an elderly woman always has in her room and where things are hidden from prying eyes. Light the lamp in front of the icon and then look around your room. Just sit, look around, and try to see where you live, because I'm sure if you've been praying for the last fourteen years, you haven't noticed your room for a long time. And then take your knitting and knit for fifteen minutes before the face of God; but I forbid you to say even one word of prayer. Just knit and try to enjoy the silence of your room.”

She thought that this was not very pious advice, but decided to try it. After some time, she came to me and said: “You know, it’s working out!” I asked: “What happens?” – because I was very curious how my advice worked. And she says: “I did as you said: I got up, washed, cleaned my room, had breakfast, came back, made sure that there was nothing around that would irritate me... I remembered that I had to knit in the face of God, and then I took knitting, and felt the silence more and more... It did not consist of absence, there was the presence of something in it. The surrounding silence began to fill me and merge with the silence within me.” And at the end she said something very beautiful, which I later came across in the French writer Georges Bernanos; she said: “I suddenly noticed that this silence is a presence; and at the core of this silence was the One who is Silence itself, Peace itself, Harmony itself.”

Very often this could happen to us, if instead of fussing and “doing” something, we could simply say: “I am in God’s presence. What a joy! Let me keep quiet..."

It often happens that in prayer we do not always ask for what we really need, we ask as if “in reserve.” Sometimes we ask for the wrong thing and end up getting nothing.

But even when we ask God for what we cannot live without, we lack patience and consistency. We believe that having asked once and not received what we wanted, we should give up the prayer: well, God doesn’t give what we ask for, what can you do! One of the Fathers of the Church says that prayer is like an arrow, but this arrow will fly and reach its target only if the shooter has enough shooting skills, skill, patience and willpower.

Unfortunately, we often don’t even notice that our prayer has already been answered. Yes, the answer is not always pleasant, but it is given to us as medicine, and medicines are rarely sweet.

Therefore, experienced people advise beginners on the prayer path: “Be careful in your prayers, because one day they may come true.”

Why does God send diseases to us?

The question “Why did God send me illness?” - perhaps the most common among those who have recently come to faith. Probably, people see the Lord as a kind of judge in a robe, who from morning to evening weighs the extent of everyone’s guilt and determines punishments. Did you act badly? Here's a disease for you! Did you act very badly? Your illness will be long and severe! Next time, think before you do something bad...

If God made everything so simple, life would be much easier for us here on Earth! It would be enough not to do bad things, and each of us would always be healthy and prosperous. But you’ve probably noticed yourself: very often kind, good, smart people live difficult lives, get seriously ill, overcome adversity throughout their lives, while people who are not very decent live luxuriously and don’t give a damn. They have everything - health, money, and luck in business... Why does this happen? Yes, because the Lord, truly being the Supreme Judge, does not actually judge us during our lifetime. And he doesn't punish. There are, of course, exceptions, but for this you need to do something completely terrible. In other cases, the Lord gives us freedom of choice: to do this or that, to take this or that road. We build our own lives. And you will have to answer for HOW it was built much later - when this process has already been completed. Believe me, the Lord is not at all concerned with punishing us with illness for each of our sins. Moreover, very often illness is not a punishment for a person; it is sent to him, oddly enough, for his own good. It's hard to believe, but it's true. This is how Father Georgy Simakov, rector of the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in the village of Troitskoye, Tver province, answers this question.

– Many people are sure that illness is God’s punishment for sins. Is it so?

- Of course not. In general, the Lord is merciful; He rarely punishes people. And our illnesses are not a punishment at all, as for some reason people tend to think. Sometimes illnesses are presented to a person as admonition so that he stops sinning. Do you feel the difference? Not as a punishment, but as an admonition. A person himself cannot stop on the wrong path in life, and the Lord helps him. Often illness can serve as a protection against evil that has not yet been committed. It can be sent to a righteous person to test his faith. Illnesses can be sent to us so that, having been healed, a person himself realizes and conveys to others through his healing the greatness of God. There is another type of illness; they are sent so that a person atones for those sins that he committed out of ignorance or that he forgot about. As you can see, there can be many causes of the disease. Every sick person should think carefully about what his illness means and why it was sent to him. Only after understanding this can you turn in prayer to the Lord, to the Mother of God, to the saints with a request for healing.

– We often hear: “God is merciful and just!” Why does He allow people - often very good people! – were you sick and suffering? Where is mercy and justice here?

– The Holy Fathers say: illness is not just suffering, it is a time when God visits a person. This happens invisibly and not always perceptibly, but immutably. The Lord brings physical illness to man as a bitter medicine for mental and spiritual illness. Saint Tikhon of Zadonsk taught this: “The health of the body opens a person’s doors to many whims and sins, but closes the infirmity of the body. During illness, we feel that human life is like a flower that immediately dries up as soon as it blooms.”

And Saint Theophan the Recluse wrote: “God sends other things as punishment, like penance, and others as discipline, so that a person will come to his senses; otherwise, to save you from the trouble that a person would get into if he were healthy; another thing is for a person to show patience and thereby deserve a greater reward; other, to cleanse from some passion, and for many other reasons. There are diseases, the cure of which is prohibited by the Lord, when he sees that illness is more necessary for salvation than health... Sometimes the Lord takes away strength in order to at least calm a person down. He no longer knows how to fix it differently.” On my own behalf, I can only add that there is no disease that cannot be cured through our prayers.

After all, there is no human sin that would exceed God’s mercy...

– Why does the same suffering benefit some people and harm others?

– And you will remember the thieves crucified near the Lord on two crosses. One, suffering, thanked the Lord and asked Him to help him and bring him into His Kingdom, and the other blasphemed God. This is how all people relate to the cross of illness sent to them: some ask God, while others blaspheme Him. The prudent thief inherited heaven, and the evil thief inherited hell, although both were at the cross of the Lord.

– What should you do if you get sick?

– If a serious illness begins, you must first resort to prayer, as St. Neil of Sinai taught: “And before any medicine or doctor, resort to prayer.” Then it is good to ask the Lord to send a doctor who would understand your illness and help you heal.

During illness, each person must resort to holy things: eat holy prosphora, anoint himself with holy oil, take it inside and sprinkle it with holy water, read prayers in front of the icons of the Mother of God, the holy saints of God who help in illness, especially the holy great martyr Panteleimon.

– Often, when Orthodox people fall ill, they do not go to the doctor, they say: “Everything is God’s will!” How does the Church feel about this issue?

– The Lord created doctors so that they could heal sick people. Therefore, when we treat ourselves or do not treat ourselves at all, we commit a sin against our health. You definitely need to get treatment! But we shouldn’t forget about prayer, because prayer is our best helper and faithful healer in illness. It is very useful to drink Epiphany (Epiphany) water during illness, which has enormous healing power. There are many cases where just a few drops poured into the mouth of an unconscious patient brought him to his senses and changed the course of the disease.

Water of minor consecration (it can be taken at any temple on any day) is drunk as needed, saying the same prayer. In addition, they smear holy water, moisten sore spots, sprinkle themselves and sprinkle their belongings, room and hospital bed, and food. For headaches or other pains, a compress with Epiphany water helps.

Holy oil also eases the suffering of a sick person. For the patient, oil is important, which is consecrated during the unction, litia. They are anointed with it and added to food. Oil from lamps from holy places, from the relics of saints, has great power, miraculous icons. The holy myrrh has even greater miraculous power. You can only anoint yourself with myrrh, and do it crosswise on your forehead and sore spots.

Sincere prayer pronounced with faith, holy water, anointing with oil from the relics of God's saints or from miraculous icons contribute to a speedy recovery from any, even the most serious, illness.

– What to do if neither medicine nor doctors help, and the person suffers?

– We must try to bear the illness complacently, endure the suffering that comes, and remember that the Lord will not lay on a person a cross that he cannot bear. Therefore, one should endure and ask the Lord to strengthen the soul to endure the illness. And, of course, continue to pray!

– How should we pray for our neighbors when they are sick?

– There are several very simple prayers that need to be read every day. These are the prayers:

First prayer for the healing of the sick

Master, Almighty, Holy King, punish and do not correct, strengthen those who fall and raise up the overthrown, correct the sorrows of bodily people, we pray to You, our God, visit Your weak servant (name) with Your mercy, forgive him every sin, voluntary and involuntary. Hey, Lord, send down Your healing power from heaven, touch the body, extinguish the fire, tame passion and all lurking weakness, be the Physician of Your servant (name), raise him from the sick bed and from the bed of bitterness, whole and all-perfect, grant him to Your Church, pleasing and doing Your will. For it is Yours to have mercy and save us, O our God, and to You we ascribe glory, to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Second prayer for the healing of the sick

O Most Merciful God, Father, Son and Holy Soul, worshiped and glorified in the Undivided Trinity, look with compassion on your servant (name), who is overcome by illness; forgive him all his sins; grant him healing from his illness; restore his health and bodily strength; Give him a long and prosperous life, Your peaceful and premium blessings, so that together with us he brings grateful prayers to You, the All-Bountiful God and my Creator.

Most Holy Theotokos, through Your omnipotent intercession, help me to beg Your Son, my God, for the healing of God’s servant (name).

All saints and angels of the Lord, pray to God for His sick servant (name). Amen.

– How do you feel about herbal medicine – herbal treatment, homeopathy, reflexology, acupuncture?

– I have a positive attitude towards professional herbal treatment. Homeopathy was widely used by priests before the revolution. Saint John of Kronstadt, Saint Theophan the Recluse, Saint Ignatius Brianchaninov, Reverend Ambrose Optinsky and other fathers spoke with approval about this science and blessed the use of its methods. If acupuncture is carried out by acupuncturists who are not both bioenergeticists or psychics, based on knowledge of the meridians and the amplitude of the potentials of each biologically active point, this in no way contradicts the Orthodox doctrinal truth.

In principle, many treatment methods can be combined with each other. And, of course, we must not forget to pray during illness. And when recovery comes, you should definitely thank the Lord for healing! I always advise my parishioners to read the following prayer:

Prayer of thanksgiving, St. John of Kronstadt, read after healing from illness

Glory to Thee, Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of the Father Without Beginning, who alone heals every ailment and every illness among people, for You have had mercy on me, a sinner, and delivered me from my illness, not allowing it to develop and kill me according to my sins. Grant me from now on, Master, the strength to firmly do Your will for the salvation of my damned soul and for Your glory with Your Originless Father and Your Consubstantial Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Why do we pray to saints?

Why pray to saints if there is Christ? Sooner or later, every Orthodox person asks himself (and then not only himself) this question. What does this mean? Doesn't God Himself hear us? Do we necessarily need intermediaries to communicate with Him? And it turns out that the host of saints is something like the “reference service” of the Lord, through which all our requests for help, our prayers pass?

No, that's not how it works! As proof, I would like to give you the story of priest Dionisy Svechnikov, who in practice often has to deal with people who wonder why we pray to the saints.

Once I had to talk with one young man who, having come to the temple, was very outraged by the presence of a large number of icons in the church. It was clear that the young man was well versed in the knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, had an understanding of some Christian dogmas, although somewhat distorted, but at the same time he was an absolutely non-church person...

...He supported his arguments with the words of Holy Scripture: “It is said, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him only’” (Matthew 4:10). So why is it like this in Orthodox churches? a large number of icons of saints, when there should be nothing except images of Christ? And when you enter the church, all you hear is pray to the Mother of God, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Panteleimon the Healer and someone else. Where has God gone? Or have you already replaced Him with other gods?”

I felt that the conversation would be difficult and, apparently, long. I will not retell it in its entirety, but I will try to highlight only the essence, because in our difficult times, many people ask similar questions...

To begin with, I invited the young man to understand the definitions, following simple logic... So, who are the saints and why should we pray to them? Are these really some lower-order gods? After all, the Church calls to honor them and offer prayers to them. Let's start with the fact that the veneration of saints is an ancient Christian tradition, preserved since apostolic times. A martyr who suffered for Christ immediately after his death became an object of reverent veneration among believers. On the tombs of the first Christian saints they performed Divine Liturgy, prayers were offered to them. It is clear that the saint was given special veneration, but not at all as a separate god. These were people who gave their lives for God. And, first of all, they themselves would be against exalting them to the rank of deity. After all, we, for example, honor the memory of people who laid down their lives for the Fatherland on the battlefields. And we even erect monuments to them so that future generations will know and honor these people. So why can’t Christians honor the memory of people who especially pleased God with their lives or martyrdom, while calling them saints? I have asked young man answer this question. There was an affirmative answer. The first bastion of sectarian thinking collapsed...

...Thus, Orthodox Christians do not worship saints at all, but venerate them. They are revered as senior mentors, as people who have reached spiritual heights, as people living in God and for God. People who have reached the Kingdom of Heaven. And the basis for honoring mentors was given by St. Paul: “Remember your teachers... and considering the end of their lives, imitate their faith” (Heb. 13:7). And the faith of the saints is the Orthodox faith and it has called for the veneration of saints since apostolic times. And one of the greatest saints, John of Damascus, spoke about this veneration: “The saints are venerable - not by nature, we worship them because God glorified them and made them terrible for enemies and benefactors for those who come to them with faith. We worship them not as gods and benefactors by nature, but as servants and co-servants of God, who have boldness towards God out of their love for Him. We worship them because the King Himself honors Himself when He sees that the person He loves is revered not as a King, but as an obedient servant and a friend well-disposed towards Him.”

Our conversation with the young man moved into a calmer direction, and now he listened more than he spoke. But to be more convincing, it was necessary to give a couple more compelling arguments that I was right, and I hastened to do so.

The saints are our prayer books and patrons in heaven and therefore living and active members of the militant, earthly Church. Their grace-filled presence in the Church, externally manifested in their icons and relics, surrounds us as if with a prayer cloud of the glory of God. It does not separate us from Christ, but brings us closer to Him, unites us with Him. These are not intermediaries between God and people who would set aside the One Mediator Christ, as Protestants think, but our prayer partners, friends and helpers in our service to Christ and our communication with Him.

Now I could calmly move on to the question of prayer to the holy saints. As I have already shown above, the saints are our companions in prayer and friends on the path of serving God. But can we not ask to intercede for us before the throne of the Almighty? Isn't the same thing happening in ours? Everyday life, when we ask our loved ones and acquaintances to put in a good word for us in front of our superiors? But our Heavenly Father is much higher than any earthly authority. And everything is truly possible for Him, which cannot be said about simple earthly people. But when praying to the saints, we must not forget about praying to the Lord. For He alone is the Giver of all blessings.

And this is a very important point, because many Orthodox Christians, in prayer to the saints, forget about the One to whom, in the end, the prayer request will be sent, even through the intercession of one of the saints. A Christian should not forget about the Lord his God. After all, the saints also served Him. By this I showed the young man how important it is not to go too far even in such a seemingly simple matter as prayer. It was clear that the guy was in some confusion, but having collected his thoughts, he asked the last question: “Tell me, why is it necessary to pray to different saints on a specific issue?” I was expecting this question and the answer was already ready. Saints can help us not because of the abundance of their merits, but because of the spiritual freedom they acquire in love, which is achieved by their feat. It gives them the power to come before God in prayer, as well as in active love to people. God gives the saints, along with the angels of God, to accomplish His will in the lives of people with active, although usually invisible, help. They are the hands of God with which God does His works. Therefore, it is given to saints even beyond death to do works of love not as a feat for their own salvation, which has already been accomplished, but, indeed, to help in the salvation of other brothers. And this help is given by the Lord Himself in all our everyday needs and experiences through the prayers of the saints. Hence the saints - patrons of certain professions or intercessors before God in everyday needs. Pious church tradition, based on the lives of the saints, attributes to them effective assistance to their earthly brothers in various needs. For example, St. George the Victorious, who was a warrior during his lifetime, is revered as the patron of the Orthodox army. They pray to the Great Martyr Panteleimon, who was a doctor during his lifetime, for deliverance from bodily ailments. Nicholas the Wonderworker is greatly revered by sailors, and girls pray to him for successful marriage, based on the facts of his life. People who live off fishing pray to the apostles Peter and Andrew, who before their high calling were simple fishermen, for a successful catch. And, of course, one cannot help but say about the highest angel and archangel of all, the Most Holy Theotokos, who stands at the head of the host of saints. She is the patroness of motherhood.

Our conversation was coming to a logical end. I really hoped that the arguments I presented would leave a mark on the soul of this young man. And I was not mistaken. Finally, he said a phrase for which one could talk for a very long time: “Thank you! I realized that I was wrong in many ways. Apparently, my knowledge of Christianity is still not enough, but now I know where to look for the truth. In Orthodoxy. Again Thanks a lot" With these words my interlocutor left. Left alone with my joy, I hurried to the temple to offer a prayer of gratitude to the Lord and all the saints who helped me that day in my pastoral service. But that's a completely different story...

Why do we venerate holy relics?

What are holy relics? Why did the Orthodox Church establish their veneration? Where does the confidence of believers come from that through prayers at the holy relics they will certainly receive the help and intercession of the saints?

“The word “relics” literally means “remains” in Greek. The word “relics” was always used in the same sense in the Church Slavonic language. However, it would be more accurate to say that it is customary to call relics the bones of a deceased person, something that remains for a long time after his departure to another world.

One chronicle of 1472 tells the following about the opening of the coffins of the Moscow metropolitans resting in the Assumption Cathedral: “Jonah found his whole being, but Photey’s whole being was found, not all of his being, the only “relics”” (Collected Russian Chronicles. Vol. VI. P. 195).

In 1667, Metropolitan Pitirim of Novgorod was informed about the discovery of the relics of St. Neil Stolbensky: “The coffin and his holy body were given over to the earth, and all his holy relics are intact” (Acts collected in libraries and archives Russian Empire archaeographic expedition of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. St. Petersburg T. IV. P. 156). In general, “in the language of ancient church literature, incorruptible relics are not incorruptible bodies, but preserved and undecayed bones” (Golubinsky E.E. Canonization of Saints. pp. 297–298).

Church history says that relics have always been the name given to the preserved remains of holy martyrs and great ascetics. Relics are venerated, even if they are preserved only in the form of ashes or dust.

In 156, the holy martyr Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, was killed with a sword and burned, but the bones that survived the fire and the ashes were for Christians “more honorable than valuable stones and more valuable than gold.”

Saint John Chrysostom writes about the relics of the Antiochian martyr Babyla: “Many years passed after his burial, only bones and ashes remained in his tomb, which were transferred with great honor to the tomb in the suburb of Daphne.”

The Most Holy Lucian talks about the relics of the holy Archdeacon Stephen that he found: “Very small particles remained from his bones, and his whole body turned to dust... With psalms and songs they carried these relics (remains) of Blessed Stephen to the holy church of Zion...” Blessed Jerome says , that the highly revered relics of the prophet Samuel existed in the form of dust, and the relics of the apostles Peter and Paul - in the form of bones (Golubinsky E.E. Decree. Op. P. 35, note).

At the present time, during the discovery of the relics of St. Seraphim of Sarov (1903), St. Pitirim of Tambov and Hieromartyr Hermogenes, Patriarch of Moscow (1914), only the bones of saints were found, which serve as an object of reverent veneration for all believers.

Why did the Orthodox Church establish the veneration of holy relics?

Explanation of this Orthodox tradition can be found in the works of the holy fathers.

John Chrysostom says: “The sight of the tomb of a saint, penetrating the soul, amazes it, and excites it, and brings it into such a state, as if the one lying in the tomb praying together, stands before us, and we see him, and thus the person experiencing this is filled with great jealousy and leaves here, having become a different person... Truly, it is as if a light breeze blows from everywhere on those present at the tomb of the martyr, a breeze that is not sensual and strengthens the body, but can penetrate into the soul itself, improving it in all respects and overthrowing She has every earthly burden."

One of the teachers ancient Church Origen says: “In prayer meetings there is a twofold society: one consisting of people, the other of celestial beings...” This means that when we pray at the relics of saints, we seem to pray together with them, with a single prayer.

Towards the end of the 7th century, the Frankish Council decided that the throne could only be consecrated in a church that contained the relics of saints, and the VII Ecumenical Council (787) determined that “for the future, any bishop who consecrated a church without relics must be deposed” ( Rule 7). Since then, every church has had antimensions, into which particles of holy relics are necessarily placed, and without which it is impossible to celebrate the Sacrament of the Eucharist. This means that in any church there are necessarily the relics of saints, which, according to our faith, serve as a guarantee of the presence of saints during divine services, their participation in our prayers, their intercession for us before the Lord.

The third basis for the veneration of holy relics is the teaching of the Orthodox Church about relics as carriers of grace-filled powers. “Your relics are like a full vessel of grace, overflowing upon all who flow to them,” we read in prayer to St. Sergius of Radonezh.

The grace of God is taught to humanity through the mediation of certain holy people who performed miracles during their lifetime, and after death imparted this miraculous power to their remains.

The forces of grace that act through the bodies of saints during their lives continue to act in them after death. This is precisely what the veneration of holy relics as bearers of grace is based on. The relics of saints, says the prophet Ephraim the Syrian, heal the sick, cast out demons, for the grace of the Holy Spirit is always found in holy remains...

Based on materials from the article “Veneration of Holy Relics”, Journal of the Moscow Patriarchate, No. 1, 1997.

So, prayer for an Orthodox Christian is a conversation, communication with God. Turning to the Lord in prayer is a need of the soul of a believer; it is not for nothing that the holy fathers called prayer breath of the soul.

When following your daily prayer rule, you need to remember two things.

First . That's why it's called daily prayer rule, which is mandatory. Every Orthodox Christian prays in the morning And before bedtime; he prays and before eating, A after meal thanks God. Christians pray before starting any business(work, study, etc.) and upon completion. Before starting work, read the prayer “To the Heavenly King...” or special prayers for the beginning of any task. At the end of the task, the prayer to the Mother of God “It is worthy to eat” is usually read. All these prayers are contained in Orthodox Prayer Book.

So, in the prayer life there should be regularity and discipline. You cannot skip the daily prayer rule and pray only when you feel like it and when you are in the mood. A Christian is a warrior of Christ; in baptism he takes an oath of allegiance to the Lord. The life of every warrior, soldier is called service. It is built according to a special schedule and charter. And an Orthodox person also performs his service by performing the prayer rule. This service to God takes place according to the statutes of the Church.

Second , what should be remembered when following the rule: you cannot transform daily prayer into the formal reading of the prescribed prayers. It happens that during confession a priest hears: “I began to read the morning prayers and only halfway through I realized that I was reading the evening rule.” This means that the reading was purely formal, mechanical. It does not produce spiritual fruit. To prevent the implementation of the rule from turning into a formal proofreading, you need to read it slowly, preferably out loud or in a low voice, pondering the meaning of the prayer, standing reverently - after all, we are standing before God Himself and talking with Him. When going to pray, you need to collect yourself, calm down, and drive away all worldly thoughts and worries. If, while reading prayers, inattention and extraneous thoughts came and we stopped paying attention to what we were reading, we need to stop and start reading the prayer again, this time with due attention.

It can be difficult for a new Christian to immediately read the complete prayer rule. Then with blessings spiritual father or the parish priest, he can choose at least a few morning and evening prayers from the Prayer Book. For example, three or four, and pray according to this abbreviated rule, gradually adding one prayer at a time from the Prayer Book - as if ascending “from strength to strength.”

Of course, it is not easy for a person taking his first steps in spiritual life to follow the complete rule. There is still a lot he doesn't understand. The Church Slavonic text is still difficult for him to understand. You should purchase a small dictionary of Church Slavonic words in order to better understand the meaning of the texts you read. Understanding and skill in prayer will definitely come with time if a person sincerely wants to understand what he read and does not stand still in his prayer life.

In their morning prayers, Christians ask God for a blessing for the coming day and thank Him for the night that has passed. Evening prayers prepare us for bed, and are also a confession of the sins of the past day. In addition to the morning and evening rule, an Orthodox person must preserve the memory of God throughout the day and mentally turn to Him. Without Me you cannot do anything, says the Lord (John 15:5). Any business, even the simplest, must begin with at least short prayer about God's help in our labors.

Many mothers of infants complain that they have no time left for their daily routine. Indeed, when a child grows and needs to be taken care of day and night, it is very difficult to fulfill the complete prayer rule. Here we can advise you to constantly perform internal prayer throughout the day and ask God for help in all matters and concerns. This applies not only to the mother of small children, but also to any Orthodox Christian. So our life will pass with constant memory of God and we will not forget Him in the vanity of the world.

Prayers are conventionally divided into petitionary, repentant, grateful And doxological. Of course, we must not only turn to the Lord with requests, but we must constantly thank Him for His countless benefits. And, most importantly, they must be able to see the gifts of God in their lives and appreciate them. You need to make it a rule: at the end of the day, remember all the good things that were sent from God on the previous day, and read prayers of gratitude. They are in any complete Prayer Book.

In addition to the mandatory prayer rule, every Orthodox person can take upon himself a strict rule. For example, read canons and akathists throughout the day. The peculiarity of the construction of the akathist is the word “rejoice” repeated many times. Therefore, he has a special joyful mood. In ancient times, the daily reading of psalms occupied a special place in the spiritual life of a Christian.

Reading canons, akathists, psalms helps in mournful or difficult periods of life. For example, the canon of prayer for the Mother of God (it is in the Prayer Book) is read in every mental affliction and situation, as stated in its very name. If a Christian wants to take upon himself a special prayer rule (read the canons or, for example, say the Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner,” according to the rosary), he must take the blessing of his spiritual father or parish priest for this.

In addition to the constant prayer rule, a Christian should regularly read Holy Bible New Testament.

You can hear the following opinion: why turn to God so often with your requests and prayers? The Lord already knows what we need. They say that you need to turn to God only in special cases when it is really necessary.

This opinion is just an excuse for one’s own laziness. God is our Heavenly Father, and like any Father, He wants His children to communicate with Him and turn to Him. Both God's grace and mercy towards us can never become scarce, no matter how much we turn to God.

This parable comes to mind:

In the houses of rich people they stopped praying before meals. One day a priest came to visit them. The table was exquisite and the best dishes were served. We sat at the table. Everyone looked at the priest and thought that now he would pray before eating. But the priest said: “The owner must pray at the table, he is the first prayer book in the family.”

There was an awkward silence: no one in this family prayed. The father cleared his throat and said: “You know, dear father, we don’t pray, because in prayer before meals the same thing is always repeated. Why do the same thing every day, every year? No, we don’t pray.” The priest looked at everyone in surprise, but then the seven-year-old girl said: “Dad, don’t I really need to come to you every morning and say “good morning” anymore?”

Confession and Communion are the most important sacraments in the life of an Orthodox Christian. But not every parishioner knows how to properly prepare for them. Prayers before confession and communion are an important stage in careful preparation for the purification of the soul and the reception of the Holy Mysteries of Christ.

How to prepare for the Sacraments

This is cleansing human soul from her sinful state and preparation for the Sacrament of Communion, in which the Christian is reunited with Christ, he tastes Divine grace, strength of spirit and the power of faith.

Sacrament of Confession

Before communion, it is necessary to fast for 3-4 days: refuse to eat food of animal origin, entertainment, or watch TV programs. During the preparation period, you should read the Bible, attend divine services, and pray fervently in church and at home.

Preparing for Communion requires mandatory reading:

  • prayer canon to the Most Holy Theotokos;
  • canon to the guardian angel;

The canons can be read on any day, and the following can be read in the morning of the day on which the Sacrament will be performed. In most churches it is customary to make confession during the evening service, but in some parishes it is held in the morning on the eve of the Liturgy.

Important! Infants under 7 years old can receive communion without confession, and they are not even forbidden to have a light breakfast. It is forbidden for ladies to receive communion during critical days. Young mothers can receive communion only after 40 days after giving birth, and the cleric must read over them special prayer.

What prayers should you read?

Prayer of Simeon the New Theologian (before confession)

God and Lord of all, who has the power of every breath and soul, is the only one who can heal me! Hear the prayer of me, the accursed one, and the serpent nesting within me, consume the influx of the All-Holy and Life-Giving Spirit. And grant me, poor and naked, all virtues, to fall at the feet of my holy (spiritual) father with tears, and draw his holy soul to mercy, to have mercy on me.

And grant, Lord, in my heart humility and good thoughts, befitting a sinner who has agreed to repent to You; and may not completely abandon the one soul that united with You and confessed You, and instead of the world chose and preferred You. Be aware, Lord, that I want to be saved, even if my evil custom is an obstacle: but what is possible for You, O Lord, is all that is possible; what is impossible is from man. Amen.

Prayer of St. John of Damascus (before communion)

Master Lord Jesus Christ, Our God, merciful and humane, who alone has the power to forgive the sins of people, despise (forget), forgive all my sins, conscious and unconscious, and grant me, without condemnation, to partake of Your divine, glorious, most pure and life-giving Mysteries not in punishment, not for the multiplication of sins, but for cleansing, sanctification, as a pledge of future life and kingdom, as a strong stronghold, for protection, and the defeat of enemies, for the destruction of many of my sins. For YOU are the God of mercy and generosity, and love for mankind, and we glorify You with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Oh, woe to me, a sinner! I am the most damned man of all; there is no repentance in me; Give me, Lord, tears, so that I may weep bitterly for my deeds.

Foolish, wretched man, you waste time in laziness; think about your life, and turn to the Lord God, and weep bitterly about your deeds.

Master Christ God, who healed my passions with His passions and healed my ulcers with His wounds, grant me, who have sinned much to You, tears of tenderness; dissolve my body from the smell of Your Life-Giving Body, and delight my soul with Your Honest Blood from sorrow, with which the enemy gave me a drink; lift up my mind to You, which has fallen down, and lift me from the abyss of destruction: for I am not the imam of repentance, I am not the imam of tenderness, I am not the imam of consoling tears, leading children to their inheritance. But, Master Lord Jesus Christ, treasure of the good, grant me complete repentance and a laborious heart to seek Thy, grant me Thy grace and renew in me the images of Thy image. Leave Thee, do not leave me; go forth to seek me, lead me to Thy pasture and number me among the sheep of Thy chosen flock, educate me with them from the grain of Thy Divine Sacraments, through the prayers of Thy Most Pure Mother and all Thy saints. Amen.

Canon of prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos

Sung in every spiritual sorrow and situation.

The creation of Theostiriktus the monk.

Troparion to the Mother of God, tone 4

Let us now diligently approach the Mother of God, sinners and humility, and let us fall down in repentance calling from the depths of our souls: Lady, help us, having had mercy on us, struggling, we are perishing from many sins, do not turn away your slaves, for you are the only hope of the imams. (Twice )

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. And now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Let us never be silent, O Mother of God, in speaking Your strength to unworthiness: if You had not stood before us begging, who would have delivered us from so many troubles, who would have kept us free until now? We will not retreat, O Lady, from You: for Your servants always save you from all evil ones.

Psalm 50

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy, and according to the multitude of Your mercies, cleanse my iniquity. Above all, wash me from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin; for I know my iniquity, and I will take away my sin before me. You alone have I sinned and done evil before You; for you may be justified in all of Your words, and you will always be victorious when You judge. Behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and my mother gave birth to me in sins. Behold, you have loved the truth; You have revealed to me the unknown and secret wisdom of Yours. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. There is joy and gladness in my hearing; The bones of the humble will rejoice. Turn Your face away from my sins and cleanse all my iniquities. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb. Do not cast me away from Your presence and do not take Your Holy Spirit away from me. Reward into the world the joy of Your salvation and strengthen me with the Lord’s Spirit. I will teach the wicked Your way, and the wicked will turn to You. Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, God of my salvation; My tongue will rejoice in Your righteousness. Lord, open my mouth, and my mouth will declare Your praise. As if you had desired sacrifices, you would have given them: you do not favor burnt offerings. The sacrifice to God is a broken spirit; God will not despise a broken and humble heart. Bless Zion, O Lord, with Your favor, and may the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then favor the sacrifice of righteousness, the wave offering and the burnt offering; Then they will place the bullock on Your altar.

Tire my heart from real rebellion, and be vigilant, strengthen me in good things, my guardian, and guide me wonderfully to the silence of animals.

And now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

The Word of God dwelled in Thee, Mother of God, and man showed Thee the heavenly ladder; Because of you, the Most High has come down to us to eat.

Kontakion, tone 4

Appear to me, merciful, holy Angel of the Lord, my guardian, and do not separate from me, the foul one, but enlighten me with inviolable light and make me worthy of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Ikos

My humble soul has been tempted by many, you, holy representative, vouchsafed the ineffable glory of heaven, and a singer from the face of the disembodied powers of God, have mercy on me and preserve me, and enlighten my soul with good thoughts, so that with your glory, my Angel, I will be enriched, and overthrow the evil-minded enemies of me , and make me worthy of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Song 7

Irmos: The youths came from Judea, in Babylon, sometimes, by the faith of the Trinity, they asked the fire of the fire, singing: God of the fathers, blessed art thou.

Chorus: Holy Angel of God, my guardian, pray to God for me.

Be merciful to me and pray to God, O Lord Angel, for I have you as an intercessor in my whole life, a mentor and guardian, given to me by God forever.

Chorus: Holy Angel of God, my guardian, pray to God for me.

Do not leave my accursed soul on its journey, killed by a robber, holy Angel, who was betrayed by God without blame; but I will guide you on the path of repentance.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

I bring all my disgraced soul away from my evil thoughts and deeds: but precede, my mentor, and grant me healing with good thoughts, so that I always deviate onto the right path.

And now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Fill everyone with wisdom and Divine strength, Hypostatic Wisdom of the Most High, for the Mother of God, for the sake of those who cry out with faith: Our father, God, blessed art thou.

Song 8

Irmos: Praise and exalt the Heavenly King, Whom all the angels sing to all ages.

Chorus: Holy Angel of God, my guardian, pray to God for me.

Sent from God, strengthen the belly of my servant, your servant, most blessed Angel, and do not leave me forever.

Chorus: Holy Angel of God, my guardian, pray to God for me.

You are a good angel, my soul's mentor and guardian, most blessed, I sing for ever.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Be my protection and take away all people on the day of testing; good and evil deeds will be tempted by fire.

And now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Be a helper and silence for me, O Ever-Virgin Mother of God, Thy servant, and do not leave me deprived of Thy dominion.

Song 9

Irmos: We truly confess Thee, Theotokos, saved by Thee, Pure Virgin, with disembodied faces magnifying Thee.

To Jesus: Lord Jesus Christ my God, have mercy on me.

Have mercy on me, my only Savior, for You are merciful and merciful, and make me a partaker of righteous faces.

Chorus: Holy Angel of God, my guardian, pray to God for me.

Grant me to think and create continually, O Lord Angel, who is good and useful, as she is strong in weakness and blameless.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

As if you have boldness towards the Heavenly King, pray to Him, along with other incorporeal ones, to have mercy on me, the accursed one.

And now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Having much boldness, O Virgin, to Him Who was incarnate from You, turn me from my bonds and grant me permission and salvation through Your prayers.

Prayer to the Guardian Angel

Holy Angel of God, my guardian, pray to God for me.

Holy Angel of Christ, falling to you I pray, my holy guardian, given to me for the protection of my sinful soul and body from holy baptism, but with my laziness and my evil custom I angered your most pure lordship and drove you away from me with all the cold deeds: lies, slander , envy, condemnation, contempt, disobedience, brotherly hatred, and resentment, love of money, adultery, rage, stinginess, gluttony without satiety and drunkenness, verbosity, evil thoughts and crafty ones, proud custom and lustful indignation, driven by self-will for all carnal lust. Oh, my evil will, which even dumb animals cannot do! How can you look at me, or approach me like a stinking dog? Whose eyes, angel of Christ, look upon me, entangled in evil in vile deeds? How can I already ask for forgiveness with my bitter and evil and crafty deed, I fall into misery all day and night and at every hour? But I pray to you, falling down, my holy guardian, have mercy on me, a sinful and unworthy servant of yours (name), be me a helper and intercessor against the evil of my opponent, with your holy prayers, and make me a partaker of the Kingdom of God with all the saints, always, and now and ever and ever. Amen.

Following to Holy Communion

Through the prayers of the saints, our fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us. Amen.

Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of truth, Who is everywhere and fulfills everything, Treasure of good things and Giver of life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all filth, and save, O Good One, our souls.

Lord have mercy. (Thrice)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Lord have mercy. (12 times)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Come, let us worship our King God. (Bow)

Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King God. (Bow)

Come, let us bow and fall down to Christ Himself, the King and our God. (Bow)

Psalm 22

The Lord shepherds me and will deprive me of nothing. In a green place, there they settled me, on the calm water they raised me. Convert my soul, guide me on the paths of righteousness, for Your name’s sake. Even if I walk in the midst of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me, Your rod and Your club will comfort me. Thou hast prepared a table before me to resist those who are cold to me, Thou hast anointed my head with oil, and Thy cup makes me drunken, like a mighty one. And Thy mercy will marry me all the days of my life, and make me dwell in the house of the Lord for the length of days.

Psalm 23

The earth is the Lord's, and its fulfillment, the universe, and all who live on it. He founded food on the seas, and prepared food on the rivers. Who will ascend the mountain of the Lord? Or who will stand in His holy place? He is innocent in his hands and pure in heart, who does not take his soul in vain, and does not swear by his sincere flattery. This one will receive blessings from the Lord, and alms from God, his Savior. This is the generation of those who seek the Lord, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Lift up your gates, O princes, and lift up the everlasting gates; and the King of Glory will come in. Who is this King of Glory? The Lord is strong and strong, the Lord is strong in battle. Lift up your gates, O princes, and lift up the everlasting gates, and the King of Glory will come in. Who is this King of Glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of Glory.

Psalm 115

I believed, I said the same words, and I was greatly humbled. I died in my frenzy: every man is a lie. What shall I repay to the Lord for all that I have repaid? I will accept the cup of salvation, and I will call on the name of the Lord; I will offer my prayers to the Lord before all His people. The death of His saints is honorable before the Lord. O Lord, I am Your servant, I am Your servant and the son of Your handmaid; You have torn apart my bonds. I will devour a sacrifice of praise for you, and in the name of the Lord I will call. I will offer my prayers to the Lord before all His people, in the courts of the house of the Lord, in the midst of you, Jerusalem.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Hallelujah. (Three times with three bows)

Troparion, tone 8

Despise my iniquities, O Lord, be born of a Virgin, and cleanse my heart, creating a temple to Your most pure Body and Blood, lower me from Your face, having great mercy without number.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

In the communion of Thy holy things, how dare I [become], unworthy? Because I dare to approach You with the worthy, the robe denounces me as if it were not the evening, and I intercede for condemnation of my many-sinful soul. Cleanse, Lord, the filth of my soul, and save me, as a Lover of Mankind.

And now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

My many and many sins, Mother of God, I have come running to You, O Pure One, demanding salvation: visit my weak soul, and pray to Your Son and our God to grant me forgiveness for the evil deeds, O Blessed One.

[On Holy Pentecost:

When the glorious disciple is enlightened at the thought of the supper, then the evil Judas, sickened by the love of money, becomes darkened, and betrays Your righteous Judge to the lawless judges. See, the steward of the property, who used strangulation for these sakes: flee the unsatiated soul, such a daring Teacher. O good Lord of all, glory to Thee.]

Psalm 50

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy, and according to the multitude of Your mercies, cleanse my iniquity. Above all, wash me from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin; for I know my iniquity, and I will take away my sin before me. To You alone have I sinned and done evil before You; for you may be justified in all of Your words, and you will always triumph over Your judgment. My hearing brings joy and joy; humble bones will rejoice. Turn Your face away from my sins and cleanse all my iniquities. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb. Do not cast me away from Your presence and do not take Your Holy Spirit away from me. Reward me with the joy of Your salvation and strengthen me with the Lord’s Spirit. Then favor the sacrifice of righteousness, the offering and the burnt offering; Then they will place the bullock on Your altar.

Canon, voice 2. Song 1

Irmos: Come, people, let us sing a song to Christ God, who divided the sea, and taught the people, even from the work of Egypt, as if he was glorified.

May Thy Holy Body, O most gracious Lord, be the bread of the eternal life, and the Honest Blood, and healing of manifold ailments.

The accursed one, defiled by unplaceable deeds, am unworthy, O Christ, of Your Most Pure Body and Divine Blood, to receive communion, which you have vouchsafed to me.

Chorus: Most Holy Theotokos, save us.

Theotokos: Good Earth, blessed Bride of God, vegetating unearthed and saving the world, grant me this food to be saved.

Song 3

Irmos: Having established me on the rock of faith, you have enlarged my mouth against my enemies. For my spirit is glad, always singing: none is holy like our God, and none is righteous more than Thee, O Lord.

Chorus: Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb.

Give me tearful drops, O Christ, that cleanse the filth of my heart: for as I have been purified by a good conscience, I come by faith and fear, O Master, to partake of Thy Divine Gifts.

Chorus: Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

May Thy Most Pure Body and Divine Blood be with me for the remission of sins, the communion of the Holy Spirit, and into eternal life, Lover of mankind, and alienation from passions and sorrows.

Chorus: Most Holy Theotokos, save us.

Theotokos: The Most Holy Table of Animal Bread, from above the mercy of which came down, and gave the world a new life, and now grant me the unworthy, with fear, to taste this, and live to be.

Song 4

Irmos: You came from the Virgin, not an intercessor, nor an Angel, but the Lord Himself, incarnate, and you saved me as a whole man. Thus I call to Thee: glory to Thy power, O Lord.

Chorus: Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb.

Thou didst desire, for our sake, to be incarnated, O Omni-merciful One, to be slain like a sheep, sin for the sake of men: I also pray to Thee, and cleanse my sins.

Chorus: Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

Heal my ulcers, Lord, and sanctify everything: and grant, O Master, that I may partake of Your secret Divine Supper, the accursed one.

Chorus: Most Holy Theotokos, save us.

Theotokos: Compassionate me also from Thy womb, O Lady, and keep me undefiled and undefiled by Thy servant, even as the reception of clever beads may be sanctified.

Song 5

Irmos: Light to the Giver and Creator of ages, O Lord, instruct us in the light of Your commandments; Don’t we know any other god for You?

Chorus: Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb.

As you foretold, O Christ, that it would be done to your evil servant, and abide in me, as you promised: for behold, Your Body is Divine, and I drink Your Blood.

Chorus: Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

Word of God and God, may the coal of Your Body be for me, who is darkened, into enlightenment, and the cleansing of my defiled soul may Your Blood.

Chorus: Most Holy Theotokos, save us.

Theotokos: Mary, Mother of God, sweet-smelling village, make me a chosen vessel through Your prayers, so that I may partake of Your Son of sanctification.

Song 6

Irmos: Lying in the abyss of sin, I call upon the unfathomable abyss of Thy mercy: lift me up from aphids, O God.

Chorus: Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb.

Sanctify my mind, soul and heart, O Savior, and my body, and grant me, without condemnation, O Lord, to approach the terrible Mysteries.

Chorus: Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

May I have withdrawn from passions, and may Thy grace be applied and confirmed in life by the communion of the Saints, Christ, and Thy Mysteries.

Chorus: Most Holy Theotokos, save us.

Theotokos: God, God, Holy Word, sanctify me entirely, now coming to Thy Divine Mysteries, Thy Holy Mother with prayers.

Kontakion, voice 2

Bread, O Christ, do not despise me, take Thy Body, and now Thy Divine Blood, most pure, Master, and Thy terrible Mysteries, may the accursed partake, may it not be for me in judgment, may it be for me in the eternal and immortal life.

Song 7

Irmos: The wise children did not serve the golden body, and they themselves went into the flames, and cursed their gods, and cried out in the midst of the flames, and I sprinkled the angel: the prayer of your lips has already been heard.

Chorus: Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb.

May the source of good things, communion, Christ, of Thy immortal Mysteries now be light, and life, and dispassion, and for the advancement and increase of the most Divine virtue, intercessionfully, the only Good One, for I glorify Thee.

Chorus: Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

May I be delivered from passions, and enemies, and needs, and all sorrows, with trembling and love with reverence, O Lover of mankind, approach now Your immortal and Divine Mysteries, and vouchsafe to You to sing: Blessed art thou, O Lord, God of our fathers.

Chorus: Most Holy Theotokos, save us.

Theotokos: Who gave birth to the Savior Christ more than the mind, O God-gracious One, I pray to Thee now, Thy servant, the Pure Unclean One: who now wishes me to approach the most pure Mysteries, cleanse all from the filthiness of the flesh and spirit.

Song 8

Irmos: Who descended into the fiery furnace to the Jewish youth, and who turned God into flames into dew, sing the works of the Lord, and exalt them unto all ages.

Chorus: Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb.

Heavenly, and terrible, and Thy saints, Christ, now the Mysteries, and Thy Divine and Last Supper to be a fellow-companion and vouchsafe to me the desperate one, O God, my Savior.

Chorus: Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

Beneath Your compassion, O Good One, I call upon You with fear: abide in me, O Savior, and I, as you said, in You; Behold, daring in Thy mercy, I eat Thy Body and drink Thy Blood.

Chorus: Most Holy Trinity, our God, glory to Thee.

Trinity: I tremble, accepting fire, lest I be scorched like wax and like grass; Ole terrible sacrament! Ole of God's mercy! How do I partake of the Divine Body and Blood of clay and become incorruptible?

Song 9

Irmos: The Son, the God and the Lord, who is without beginning, became incarnate from the Virgin, appearing to us, the darkened one to enlighten, the squandered brother: with this we magnify the all-sung Mother of God.

Chorus: Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb.

Christ is, taste and see: the Lord for our sake, having been for us of old, brought Himself alone, as an offering to His Father, He is ever slain, sanctifying those who partake.

Chorus: Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

May I be sanctified in soul and body, Master, may I be enlightened, may I be saved, may Thy house be a communion of the sacred Mysteries, having You living within me with the Father and the Spirit, O Most Merciful Benefactor.

Chorus: Reward me with the joy of Your salvation and strengthen me with the Lord’s Spirit.

Let me be like fire, and like light, Your Body and Blood, my most honorable Savior, scorching the sinful substance, burning the thorns of passions, and enlightening all of me, let me worship Your Divinity.

Chorus: Most Holy Theotokos, save us.

Theotokos: God became incarnate from Your pure blood; In the same way, every race sings to Thee, the Lady, and the intelligent multitudes glorify, as through Thee they have clearly seen the Ruler of all, who existed among humanity.

It is worthy to eat as truly to bless Thee, Theotokos, Ever-Blessed and Most Immaculate and Mother of our God. We magnify You, the most honorable Cherub and the most glorious without comparison Seraphim, who gave birth to God the Word without corruption.

Our Father, who art in heaven! Hallowed be your name, yes kingdom come Thy will be done, as it is in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, just as we forgive our debtors; and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

If it is a week, the Sunday troparion according to the tone. If not, real troparia, tone 6:

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Lord, have mercy on us, for we trust in You; Do not be angry with us, remember our iniquities, but look upon us now as if you are gracious, and deliver us from our enemies. For Thou art our God, and we are Thy people; all works are done by Thy hand, and we call upon Thy name.

And now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Open the doors of mercy to us, blessed Mother of God, who trust in You, so that we may not perish, but may we be delivered from troubles by You: for You are the salvation of the Christian race.

Lord have mercy. (40 times) And bows as much as you want.

Although eat, O man, the Body of the Lord,

Approach with fear, but don’t get burned: there is fire.

I drink the Divine Blood for communion,

First of all, reconcile those who have grieved you.

Also daring, the mysterious food is delicious.

Other verses:

Before communion there is a terrible sacrifice,

Lady of the Life-Giving Body,

Hereby pray with trembling:

Prayer 1, Basil the Great

Master Lord Jesus Christ, our God, the Source of life and immortality, of all creation, visible and invisible, and the Creator, of the beginningless Father, co-eternal with the Son and co-originating, much for the sake of goodness in the last days, he clothed himself in flesh, and was crucified, and was buried for us, ungrateful and malicious, and Yours. Renewing with blood our nature, corrupted by sin, Himself, Immortal King, accept my sinful repentance, and incline Your ear to me, and hear my words. For I have sinned, O Lord, I have sinned in heaven and before You, and I am not worthy to look upon the height of Your glory: I have angered Your goodness, having transgressed Your commandments, and not listened to Your commands. But You, Lord, are kind, long-suffering and abundantly merciful, and did not give me up to perish with my iniquities, waiting for my conversion in every possible way. Thou art, O Lover of mankind, Thy prophet: for by will I do not want the death of a sinner, but the hedgehog will turn and live to be him. You do not want, Master, to destroy your creation by hand, and you are less than pleased with the destruction of mankind, but you want to save everyone and come into the mind of truth. Likewise, I, even though I am unworthy of heaven and earth, and sow temporary life, having subjected myself to sin, and enslaved myself with pleasure, and desecrated Your image; but having become Thy creation and creature, I do not despair of my salvation, the accursed one, but daring to receive Thy immeasurable compassion, I come. Accept me, O Lord, who loves mankind, as a harlot, as a thief, as a publican, and as a prodigal, and take away my heavy burden of sins, take away the sin of the world, and heal the infirmities of man, call those who labor and are burdened to Yourself and give rest to those who did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. And cleanse me from all defilement of the flesh and spirit, and teach me to perform holiness in Thy Passion: for by the pure knowledge of my conscience, having received part of Thy holy things, I may unite with Thy holy Body and Blood, and have You living and abiding in me, with the Father, and Your Holy Spirit. To her, Lord Jesus Christ, my God, may the communion of Thy most pure and life-giving Mysteries not be in judgment for me, nor may I be weak in soul and body, so that I am not worthy to receive communion, but grant me, even until my final breath, to accept without condemnation part of Thy holy things, in communion with the Holy Spirit, in the path of eternal life, and in a favorable answer at Thy Last Judgment: for I, too, with all Thy chosen ones, will be a partaker of Thy incorruptible blessings, which Thou hast prepared for those who love Thee, O Lord, in which Thou art glorified in eyelids. Amen.

Prayer 2, St. John Chrysostom

Lord my God, in knowing that I am not worthy, I am below pleased, and you have brought the temple of my soul under the roof, all empty and fallen, and there is no place in me worthy of bowing your head: but as from on high you humbled us for your sake, humble yourself and now to my humility; and as you received it in the den and in the wordless manger, reclining, take it in the wordless manger of my soul, and bring it into my defiled body. And just as you did not fail to bring in and shine a light on the sinners in the house of Simon the leper, so deign to bring into the house of my humble soul, lepers and sinners; and even though You did not reject a harlot and a sinner like me, who came and touched You, have mercy on me, a sinner, who comes and touches You; and just as you did not abhor her foul and unclean lips kissing Thee, below mine, abhor those defiled and unclean lips, below my vile and unclean lips, and my foul and unclean tongue. But may the coal of Your most holy Body, and Your honorable Blood, be for me, for the sanctification and enlightenment and health of my humble soul and body, for the relief of the burdens of many of my sins, for the protection from every devilish action, for the driving away and prohibition of my evil and evil customs, for the mortification of passions, for the supply of Thy commandments, for the application of Thy Divine grace, and the appropriation of Thy Kingdom. It is not because I come to You, O Christ our God, that I despise You, but because I dare you in Your ineffable goodness, and let me not withdraw from Your fellowship in the depths, I will be hunted down by the mental wolf. In the same way I pray to You: as the only One who is Holy, Master, sanctify my soul and body, mind and heart, womb and womb, and renew all of me, and root Your fear in my hearts, and create Your sanctification inseparably from me; and be my helper and intercessor, feeding my belly in the world, making me worthy to stand at Your right hand with Your saints, the prayers and supplications of Your Most Pure Mother, Your immaterial servants and the Most Pure Powers, and all the saints who have pleased You from the ages. Amen.

Prayer 3, Simeon Metaphrastus

One pure and incorruptible Lord, for the ineffable mercy of our love for mankind, we have received all the mixture, from pure and virgin blood, more than the nature, who gave birth to Thee, the Divine Spirit by invasion, and by the good will of the ever-present Father, Christ Jesus, the wisdom of God, and peace, and power; By your perception of the life-giving and saving suffering perceived, cross, nails, spear, death, mortify my soul-smothering bodily passions. By Your burial of the hellish kingdoms, bury my good thoughts, evil advice, and destroy the spirits of wickedness. By Thy three-day and life-giving resurrection of the fallen forefather, raise me up in the sin that crawled, offering me images of repentance. By Thy glorious ascension, the carnal perception of God, and honor this on the right hand of the Father, grant me the gift of receiving the communion of Thy holy Mysteries on the right hand of those who are being saved. By bringing forth the Comforter of Thy Spirit, Thy disciples have made honorable sacred vessels, friend and show me That coming. Although you would like to come again to judge the universe with righteousness, deign to seat You on the clouds, my Judge and Creator, with all Your saints: may I endlessly glorify and sing Your praises, with Your beginningless Father, and Your Most Holy and Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer 4, his

For in Thy Terrible One, who is unaccepting of persons, I stand before the Judgment Seat, O Christ God, and raise condemnation, and create a word about the evil things I have done; This day, before the day of my condemnation has even come, standing at Your holy Altar before You and before Your terrible and holy Angels, I bow down from my conscience, I offer my wicked and lawless deeds, reveal this and reprove. See, Lord, my humility, and forgive all my sins; see how my iniquity has multiplied more than the hair of my head. Why haven't you done evil? What sin have I not committed? What evil have I not imagined in my soul? I have already committed deeds: fornication, adultery, pride, arrogance, reproach, blasphemy, idle talk, inappropriate laughter, drunkenness, guttural rage, gluttony, hatred, envy, love of money, covetousness, covetousness, selfishness, love of glory, theft, untruth, ill-gaining, jealousy , slander, lawlessness; I have created every feeling and every evil that is defiled, corrupted, and indecent, and has become a work of the devil in every way. And I know, Lord, that my iniquities have surpassed my head; but the multitude of Thy bounties is immeasurable, and the mercy of Thy kindness is inexpressible, and there is no sin, conquering Thy love for mankind. Moreover, wonderful King, kindly Lord, surprise me, a sinner, with Thy mercy, show Thy goodness the power and show the strength of Thy gracious mercy, and when you turn, accept me, a sinner. Receive me as you received the prodigal, the robber, the harlot. Receive me, having sinned You beyond measure in word and deed, with placeless lust and wordless thought. And just as at the one and tenth hour you accepted those who came, having done nothing worthy, so also accept me, a sinner: for many have sinned and become defiled, and have grieved Thy Holy Spirit, and grieved Thy humane womb in deed, and in word, and in thought, in the night and in the days, both manifest and unmanifest, willingly and unwillingly. And we know that you have presented my sins before me as such as I have committed, and have spoken with me about those who have sinned unforgivenly in their minds. But Lord, Lord, do not reprove me with Thy righteous judgment, nor with Thy wrath, nor punish me with Thy wrath; have mercy on me, Lord, for I am not only weak, but also Your creation. For Thou, O Lord, hast Thou established Thy fear upon me, and I have done evil before Thee. For You alone have sinned, but I pray to You, do not enter into judgment with Your servant. If you see iniquity, Lord, Lord, who will stand? For I am the abyss of sin, and I am not worthy, below I am content to look up and see the heights of heaven, from the multitude of my sins, which are innumerable: every atrocity and deceit, and the cunning of Satan, and corruption, resentment, advice to sin and other countless passions are not destitute of me. Why haven't my sins been corrupted? Are Kiimi not kept evil? Every sin I have committed, every uncleanness I have put into my soul, would be undesirable for You, my God, and man. Who will raise me up, in the face of evil and a bit of fallen sin? Lord my God, I have trusted in You; If I have hope of salvation, if Thy love for mankind overcomes the multitude of my iniquities, be my savior, and according to Thy bounties and Thy mercy, weaken, forgive, forgive me all that I have sinned, for my soul is filled with many evils and is not in me. saving hope. Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy and do not reward me according to my deeds, and do not judge me according to my deeds, but convert me, intercede, and deliver my soul from the evils and cruel perceptions that co-increase with it. Save me for the sake of Thy mercy, that where sin increases, Thy grace abounds; and I will praise and glorify You always, all the days of my life. For You are the God of those who repent and the Savior of those who sin; and we send glory to You with Your Beginning Father and Your Most Holy and Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 5, St. John of Damascus

Master Lord Jesus Christ, our God, who alone have the power to forgive man’s sins, for as he is good and a lover of mankind, I have despised all sins in knowledge and not in knowledge, and grant me without condemnation to partake of Thy Divine, and glorious, and most pure, and life-giving Mysteries, not in heaviness, neither torment, nor to the addition of sins, but to cleansing, and sanctification, and the betrothal of the future Life and kingdom, to the wall and help, and to the objection of those who resist, to the destruction of many of my sins. For You are the God of mercy, and generosity, and love for mankind, and we send up glory to You, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 6, St. Basil the Great

We know, Lord, that I unworthily partake of Thy most pure Body and Thy honorable Blood, and I am guilty, and I condemn myself to pit and drink, not judging the Body and Blood of You of Christ and my God, but in Thy bounty I boldly come to You who said: You eat My flesh and drink My blood, he abides in Me, and I in him. Have mercy, O Lord, and do not expose me, a sinner, but do with me according to Your mercy; and may this saint be mine for healing, and purification, and enlightenment, and preservation, and salvation, and for the sanctification of soul and body; to drive away every dream, and evil deed, and the action of the devil, acting mentally in my lands, into boldness and love, even towards You; for the correction of life and affirmation, for the return of virtue and perfection; in fulfillment of the commandments, in communion with the Holy Spirit, in the guidance of the eternal life, in response to a favorable response at Thy Last Judgment: not in judgment or condemnation.

Prayer 7, Saint Simeon the New Theologian

From vile lips, from a vile heart, from an unclean tongue, from a soul defiled, accept this prayer, my Christ, and do not despise my words, below images, below lack of study. Grant me to boldly say what I want, my Christ, and even more so, teach me what I should do and say. Having sinned more than the harlot, even though I knew where you were, having bought myrrh, I came boldly to anoint Your nose, my God, my Lord and Christ. Just as you did not reject the one that came from your heart, abhor me below, the Word: Give yours to my nose, and hold and kiss, and boldly anoint this with streams of tears, like a valuable ointment. Wash me with my tears, cleanse me with them, O Word. Forgive my sins and grant me forgiveness. Weigh a multitude of evils, weigh my scabs, and see my ulcers, but also weigh my faith, and see my will, and hear my sighing. There is no hidden part of you, my God, my Creator, my Savior, below a drop of tears, below a drop of a certain part. Thy eyes have seen what I have not done, and in Thy book the essence of what has not yet been done is written to You. See my humility, see my great labor, and forgive me all my sins, O God of all: so that with a pure heart, a trembling thought, and a contrite soul, I may partake of Your undefiled and most holy Mysteries, by which everyone who eats poison and drinks with a pure heart is revived and adored; For you have said, my Lord: everyone who eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood, he abides in Me, and in Him I Am. The word of all my Lord and God is true: for you partake of the divine and adoring graces, for I am not alone, but with You, my Christ, the Trisunlar Light, enlightening the world. May I not be alone besides You, the Life-Giver, my breath, my life, my joy, the salvation of the world. For this reason, I come to You, as if I saw you, with tears, and with a contrite soul, I ask you to accept the deliverance of my sins, and to partake of Your life-giving and immaculate Mysteries without condemnation, so that You may remain, as You have promised, with me, the repentant one: may I not find Your grace except, the deceiver will delight me with the flatterer, and deceiving will lead away those who idolize Your words. For this reason I fall down to You, and cry out to You warmly: as You received the prodigal, and the harlot who came, so receive me, the prodigal and the defiled, Generously. With a contrite soul, now coming to You, we know, Savior, as another, like I, did not sin against You, lower than the deeds I did. But we know this again, because not the greatness of sins, nor the multitude of sins exceeds my God’s great patience and extreme love for mankind; but by the grace of compassion, warmly repentant, and purifying, and brightening, and creating light, you are partakers, associates of Your Divinity, doing unenviably, and strange things with both the Angel and human thought, conversing with them many times, as if with Your true friend. This is the bold thing they do to me, this is what they force me to do, O my Christ. And daring to show us Your rich kindness, rejoicing and trembling together, the grass partakes of the fire, and a strange miracle, we water it without burning, just as the bush of old burned without burning. Now with a grateful thought, with a grateful heart, with grateful hands, my soul and my body, I worship and magnify and glorify Thee, my God, for being blessed, now and forever.

Prayer 8, St. John Chrysostom

God, weaken, forsake, forgive me my sins, those who have sinned, whether in word, whether in deed, whether in thought, will or involuntarily, by reason or foolishness, forgive me all, as you are good and a lover of mankind, and through the prayers of Your Most Pure Mother, your intelligent servants and Holy powers, and all the saints from the ages who have pleased You, without condemnation, deign to accept Your holy and most pure Body and venerable Blood, for the healing of soul and body, and for the cleansing of my evil thoughts. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

His same, 9th

I am not pleased, Master Lord, that you may come under the roof of my soul; but since You, as a Lover of Mankind, want to live in me, I boldly approach; You command that I open the doors that You alone created, and with love for mankind, like You, you will see and enlighten my darkened thoughts. I believe that You have done this: You did not drive away the harlot who came to You with tears; You have rejected below the publican, having repented; below the thief, having come to know Your kingdom, You drove away; Thou hast left the repentant lower than the persecutor; but from repentance Thou hast brought all who have come to Thee, in the person of Thy friends Thou hast made the One blessed, always, now and unto endless ages. Amen.

His same, 10th

Lord Jesus Christ my God, weaken, forgive, cleanse and forgive my sinful, and indecent, and unworthy servant, my sins, and transgressions, and my fall from grace, from my youth, even to this day and hour, those who have sinned: if in mind and in foolishness, or in words or deeds, or thoughts and thoughts, and undertakings, and all my feelings. And through the prayers of the Most Pure and Ever-Virgin Mary, Thy Mother, who without seed gave birth to Thy one unashamed hope and intercession and salvation, grant me to uncondemnedly partake of Thy most pure, immortal, life-giving and terrible Mysteries, for the remission of sins and for eternal life: for sanctification and enlightenment, strength, healing, and health of soul and body, and in the consumption and complete destruction of my evil thoughts, and thoughts, and enterprises, and nightly dreams, dark and crafty spirits; For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, and the honor, and the worship, with the Father and Thy Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 11, St. John of Damascus

I stand before the doors of Your temple, and I do not retreat from fierce thoughts; but You, Christ God, have justified the publican, and had mercy on the Canaanites, and opened the doors of paradise to the thief, open to me the womb of Your love for mankind, and accept me, coming and touching You, like a harlot who is bleeding: and having touched the hem of Your robe, make it easy to receive healing, Thy most pure ones restrained their noses and bore the remission of sins. But I, the accursed one, dare to perceive Your whole Body, so that I will not be scorched; but accept me as you do, and enlighten my spiritual feelings, burning away my sinful guilt, with the prayers of You who gave birth without seed, and the Heavenly powers; for blessed art thou unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer of Saint John Chrysostom

I believe, Lord, and confess that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the living God, who came into the world to save sinners, from whom I am the first. I also believe that this is Your most pure Body, and this is Your most pure Blood. I pray to You: have mercy on me, and forgive me my sins, voluntary and involuntary, in word, in deed, in knowledge and ignorance, and grant me, without condemnation, to partake of Your most pure Sacraments, for the remission of sins and eternal life. Amen.

When you come to receive communion, say this prayer mentally:

O Master, Lover of Mankind, Lord Jesus Christ my God, let this Holy One not be brought into judgment against me, because I am unworthy of being: but for the purification and sanctification of soul and body, and for the betrothal of the future life and kingdom. It is good for me, if I cleave to God, to place the hope of my salvation in the Lord.

Thy secret supper this day, O Son of God, accept me as a partaker; I will not tell your enemies the secret, nor give you a kiss like Judas, but like a thief I will confess to you: remember me, O Lord, in your kingdom.

Preparation for Confession of Sins

During confession, a person is reconciled with Christ; he reveals his sins to Him in the presence of a cleric, who is a “mediator” between God and man. At the end of the confession, the cleric reads a prayer of permission over the confessor - he prays to God for the forgiveness of the sins of the penitent.

During confession, you need to talk only about your sins.

You should carefully prepare for confession, and for this you need to realize the sinfulness of your life and understand that there is sin - any action or thought that contradicts the Commandments.

  • Disbelief in God, creating idols for oneself, worshiping idols, communicating with magicians;
  • Disregard for people, condemnation of their shortcomings, fornication and depraved acts;
  • Murder;
  • Carrying out abortions, which is equivalent to murder (except for termination of pregnancy for medical reasons);
  • Theft of other people's property, lies and slander.

During the celebration of the Sacrament, it is necessary to talk only about one’s sins, there is no need to downplay them or look for justification for them. You should not look for “church” words; you should describe your sins in ordinary language. There is no need to be ashamed of the priest when describing his misdeeds: the cleric accepts a lot of confessions and is not surprised by anything for a long time, and sins do not change over the centuries, each person just describes them differently. The priest will never condemn the repentant, he can only give advice on what to do in a given situation, and will definitely pray for every sinner.

There is no need to start confession with “light” sins: breaking the fast, not attending divine services, wearing, for example, trousers (for women). God doesn't need to dig into daily minutiae. He expects from each confessor renunciation of sin, love and complete dedication of the heart, patience and forgiveness. It is important to confess possible mortal sins: murder, theft, renunciation of faith, adultery.

Important! The priest may order penance. This means a ban for some time on communion, prayer, and prostrations. This is not a punishment for sins, but a means to destroy sin and cleanse the soul.

Reminder for those preparing for Holy Communion

Communion must be performed “not for judgment or condemnation”; for this, a number of conditions must be met.

Confession

  1. A person must understand that he will not just taste the Blood and Flesh of Christ, but will soon unite with the Creator for his sanctification and cleansing of sins.
  2. The communicant must be completely free of hypocrisy and have the Fear of God, which is the beginning of human wisdom.
  3. The human soul should experience peace, it should be free from malice, enmity and hatred. Only in this state can one approach the Chalice.
  4. It is forbidden to violate church canons; it is necessary to remain within the framework of moral life. Only such people are given grace.
  5. Before performing the Sacrament, absolution of sins is required.
  6. It is necessary to observe liturgical fasting: from 24 o'clock the night before until the reception of the Holy Mysteries of Christ, it is forbidden to eat or drink anything. It is necessary to start Communion on an empty stomach. On the days of night services before great holidays, the duration of liturgical fasting should be at least 6 hours. Relaxation is given only to seriously ill people: they are allowed to take medications and wash them down with a sip of water (but before communion it is necessary to notify the priest about this).
  7. It is important to observe marital fasting for several days. But family circumstances should be taken into account so that this fast does not harm the communicant and his family. During Holy Week It is permitted not to observe bodily fasting.

In the temple, after reading the prayer “Our Father,” the communicant should go to the altar and wait for the priest to bring out the Chalice with the Gifts. After the clergy exits the royal gates, you should cross your arms over your chest ( right hand put on the left) and approach the Chalice in order of turn. The priest needs to voice his name given at baptism, and then reverently accept the Body and Blood of Christ, kiss the edge of the Chalice, and go to the table where pieces of prosphora and warmth are distributed to the communicants. But you can’t go home yet; after the sermon, the priest will bring out the Crucifix, which you need to touch with your lips.
