On Tuesday South Korea began dismantling loudspeakers on the border with North Korea, with the help of which Seoul had been broadcasting propaganda broadcasts to its northern neighbors for decades. Pyongyang decided to do the same.

The cessation of propaganda broadcasting symbolizes another milestone in relations between the two countries. This became possible after the summit held in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) last week.

When the DPRK and the Republic of Korea were formed in 1948, the geographic dividing line between them turned into a de facto state border.

In 1953, after a ceasefire, the demilitarized zone became an alternative option to military containment and continues to be perceived by both sides as a hostile zone to this day.

The BBC Russian service collected five interesting facts about one of the most unusual borders in the world.

1. The DMZ has a golf course that is considered one of the most dangerous in the world. Balls from it sometimes fly into a minefield.

The golf course is located at the UN headquarters Camp Boniface. It has only three holes and is surrounded on three sides by a minefield.

It was named the most dangerous golf course in the world by Sports Illustrated magazine. There is no need to play under the roar of explosions - during the whole time only one golf ball hit a mine.

2. Due to the almost complete absence of people, the DMZ has essentially become a paradise for wildlife. There is the largest concentration of wild animals and rare birds.

The area of the DMZ is 148 km long and 4 km wide. Access to its territory is strictly limited. Thanks to this, there were ideal conditions for wildlife - animals and plants, including rare ones.

Red-crowned and white-naped cranes, Himalayan bears, musk deer, and gorals are found in this area. There were reports that tigers were seen in the DMZ, which have not been found on the peninsula since the Japanese occupation.

3. Animals sometimes get blown up by mines, because the DMZ has one of the largest concentrations of all kinds of mines in the world.

Most animals are killed or injured by stepping on anti-personnel mines. Anti-tank mines, as a rule, do not cause damage to them, since they require a large mass to detonate.

Of course, no one keeps an accurate record of the animals dying in this way.

4. Tunnels were dug under the DMZ, which were supposed to be used for sabotage and delivery of contraband.

Several large tunnels are known to have been dug by the North Koreans to quickly move infantry into Southern territory in the event of war.

One of them, for example, ended 32 km from Seoul. Thus, the need to overcome minefields in the DMZ disappeared.

Pyongyang denies that the tunnels were intended for military purposes. There is no data on the use of tunnels for smuggling purposes. Now the tunnels have become a tourist attraction and one of the symbols of the frozen conflict.

5. South Korea exempts from taxes those farmers who settle in the DMZ.

On the southern side of the demilitarized zone there is actually a settlement of farmers who mainly grow rice. Getting permission to settle there is very difficult.

It is necessary to prove that before Korean War direct relatives lived in this place.

Residents pay no income tax because the territory is administered by the United Nations and young people are not conscripted into the South Korean army.
