Surgeons and other doctors are instruments in the hands of God. During the operation, the hand of each of them is guided by the Lord. Even under ideal circumstances, force majeure can occur and everything will not go according to plan.

Prayer before surgery to the Lord and holy healers relieves stress, helps to tune in to a positive result, and gives a feeling of calm. In difficult cases, when doctors do not guarantee success, you should pray. Through fervent prayers and the intercession of the saints, a miracle occurs and the disease is overcome.

    When is prayer necessary?

Already when making a diagnosis and sending the patient to prepare for surgery, you need to pray. In this case, they pray that the diagnosis gives objective results, the specialist is convinced of the need for intervention. There are cases that when cancer is suspected, after diligent prayers, the diagnosis is later not confirmed.

    Prayer is necessary:

    • Before the operation: so that everything goes well.
    • During it: about the health and well-being of doctors.
    • After surgery: about speedy recovery and recovery.

They seek God’s blessing during any intervention: before surgery on the heart, eyes, uterus, or when removing a tumor.

What to do on the eve of surgery?

The patient needs to wear pectoral cross IR, if possible, go to church and confess. For bedridden patients, you can invite a priest to the ward. After preparation, proceed to the Sacrament of Communion and ask for a blessing for the operation.

You should forgive your own offenders and mentally or personally ask for forgiveness from those you yourself have harmed. When peace comes in the soul, then the patient internally calms down and tolerates surgery better.

The church serves notes for the 40th. On the eve of the manipulation, a prayer for health is ordered, indicating in it the name of not only the patient, but also the doctors.

Who to pray to during surgery

Before the operation, you need to pray for the blessings of the surgeons and others medical workers involved in the operation. The Almighty grants wisdom to doctors and healing through their hands.

During transport to the operating room, you need to pray short prayers:

    • Jesus Christ: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
    • Mother of God: “Virgin Mother of God, Rejoice, Blessed Mary, the Lord is with You, Blessed are You among women and blessed is the fruit of Your womb, for You have given birth to the Savior of our souls.”
    • Guardian Angel: “Angel of God, my holy guardian, given to me from God from heaven for my protection! I diligently pray to you: enlighten me today, save me from all evil, guide me to good deeds, and direct me on the path of salvation. Amen".
    • Saints:“All saints and angels of the Lord, pray to God for His sick servant (name). Amen".

When moving to the operating table, you need to cross the room and yourself. If you cannot leave the cross on your neck, you can wrap it around your wrist or hair, or ask to leave it nearby where it will not interfere with the doctors.

During the administration of anesthesia, you need to repeat the Jesus Prayer or turn in your own words to your guardian angel, holy healers, Holy Virgin until consciousness turns off.

After the person has regained consciousness, one should thank the Lord and the holy intercessors for the fact that God saved life.

In Orthodoxy, you can make any request to the Lord and His saints. But some of God’s saints are more likely to help in healing, since they had such a gift during their lifetime.

They pray for health to Matrona of Moscow, Luke of Crimea, Panteleimon the Healer, and Nicholas the Wonderworker. They turn to the guardian angel and patron saint after whom the person was named.

    Lord Jesus Christ

The Almighty, out of His love for man, wishes the best for everyone. It happens that for a person’s benefit it is necessary to endure an illness as a test and purification. Illnesses humble us, make the soul more receptive to spiritual things, and open our eyes to sins.

Prayer of the sick person: “Lord God, Master of my life, You, in Your goodness, said: I do not want the death of a sinner, but that he should be converted and live. I know that this disease from which I suffer is Your punishment for my sins and iniquities; I know that for my deeds I have deserved the heaviest punishment, but, O Lover of Mankind, deal with me not according to my malice, but according to Your boundless mercy. Do not wish my death, but give me strength so that I patiently endure the disease, as a well-deserved test for me, and after healing from it I turn with all my heart, with all my soul and with all my feelings to You, the Lord God, my Creator, and live to fulfill Your holy commandments, for the peace of my family and for my well-being. Amen".

A petition for health can be read for the patient by his relatives, especially if his condition no longer allows him to pray on his own. The parents ask for the child, and their children ask for the mother and father. If it is difficult for a husband to pray for his wife, you can ask for the prayers of other caring people, relatives, and friends.

A Christian who prays to God before an operation invokes God’s mercy in the hands of the doctors, hopes for a successful outcome and completely entrusts himself into the hands of God, affirming this with the words: “Thy will be done, Lord.”

Prayer to the Lord for the sick: “O Lord Almighty, holy King, punish and do not kill, strengthen those who fall and raise those who are cast down, correct the bodily afflictions of people, we pray to Thee, our God, thy servant (name), who is infirm, visit with Thy mercy. Forgive him for every sin, voluntary and involuntary.

To her, Lord, Thy healing power was sent down from heaven, to guide the mind and hand of Thy servant, the doctor (name), and to carry out the necessary surgery safely, so that the bodily ailment of Thy servant (name) would be completely healed, and every hostile invasion would be driven far away from him. . Raise him from his sick bed, and grant him health in soul and body, pleasing and doing Your will.

It is Yours to have mercy and save us, our God, and we send up glory to You, Father and Son and Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen".

    Holy Mother of God

There are many miraculous icons Holy Mother of God, and each of them has its own characteristics. In case of serious illnesses, petitions are made to the image of the “Healer”.

Cancer patients pray to the image of the “Queen of All,” which has special grace in healing cancer. For eye diseases, people turn to the Kazan Icon. The circumstances of the appearance of this icon show its power in healing eye diseases. When women have ailments, it is customary to offer prayers to the image “ Everlasting color" This icon is considered feminine, as it helps with all women's problems.

No matter what image of the Mother of God the patient turns to before the surgical procedure, the prayer can be read the same or a specific one written to the icon is read.

Prayer to the Mother of God: “O Most Holy Virgin, Mother of the Lord Most High, Intercessor and Protection of all who resort to You! Look down from Thy holy height upon me, a sinner (name), who falls before Thy most pure image; hear my warm prayer and bring it before Your Beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ; beg Him to illuminate my gloomy soul with the light of His Divine grace, to deliver me from all need, sorrow and illness, to grant me a quiet and peaceful life, physical and mental health, to pacify my suffering heart and heal its wounds, to guide me for good deeds, may he cleanse my mind from vain thoughts, and having taught me to fulfill His commandments, may he deliver me from eternal torment and may he not deprive me of His Heavenly Kingdom. Oh, Most Holy Theotokos! You, “Joy of all who mourn,” hear me, the sorrowful one; You, called “Quenching of Sorrow,” quench my sorrow; You, "Burning Kupino", save the world and all of us from the harmful fiery arrows of the enemy; You, “Seeker of the Lost,” do not allow me to perish in the abyss of my sins. According to Bose, all my hope and hope is in Tyabo. Be a temporary Intercessor for me in life, and an Intercessor for eternal life before Your Beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Teach me to serve this with faith and love, and to reverently honor You, Most Holy Mother of God, Most Blessed Mary, until the end of my days. Amen".

    Luka Krymsky

During his lifetime, Saint Luke of Crimea was a gifted surgeon. He combined priestly ministry with medical practice. Most often, a prayer to the saint is read before the operation itself.

Prayer to the saint: “O all-blessed confessor, our holy saint Luke, great servant of Christ! With tenderness we bow the knee of our hearts, and falling to the race of your honest and multi-healing relics, like the children of our father, we pray to you with all diligence: hear us sinners and bring our prayer to the merciful and philanthropic God, to whom you now stand in the joy of the saints and with the faces of an angel. We believe that you love us with the same love, with which you loved all your neighbors while you were on earth.

Ask Christ our God: may he establish in his holy Orthodox Church the spirit of right faith and piety, may he give to her shepherds holy zeal and care for the salvation of the people entrusted to them: to observe the right of believers, to strengthen the weak and infirm in the faith, to instruct the ignorant, to reprove the contrary. Give us all a gift that is useful to everyone, and everything that is useful for temporary life and eternal salvation. Strengthening our cities, fruitful lands, deliverance from famine and destruction. Comfort for the grieving, healing for the ailing, return to the path of truth for those who have gone astray, blessing from a parent, upbringing and teaching for a child in the Passion of the Lord, help and intercession for the orphaned and needy. Grant us all your archpastoral and holy blessing, so that through you we will get rid of the wiles of the evil one and avoid all enmity and disorder, heresies and schisms.

Grant us a godly way to cross the path of temporary life, guide us on the path leading to the villages of the righteous, deliver us from airy ordeals and pray to the omnipotent God for us: yes in eternal life with you we unceasingly glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, and to Him belongs all glory, honor and power forever and ever. Amen".

    Panteleimon the Healer

The most famous Orthodox healer is Saint Panteleimon. During his lifetime, he performed many miracles of healing, and now continues to perform them. A strong prayer for healing, said by someone undergoing surgery or by people who love him, can work a miracle:

“O great servant of Christ, passion-bearer and merciful physician, Panteleimon! Have mercy on me, a sinful slave, hear my groaning and cry, propitiate the heavenly, supreme Physician of our souls and bodies, Christ our God, may He grant me healing from the illness that oppresses me. Accept the unworthy prayer of the most sinful man above all, visit me with a gracious visit, do not disdain my sinful wounds, anoint me with the oil of your mercy and heal me; Yes, healthy in soul and body, I will be able to spend the rest of my days, by the grace of God, in repentance and pleasing God and will be worthy to receive a good end to my life. Hey, servant of God! Pray to Christ God, that through your intercession he may grant me health to my body and salvation to my soul. Amen".

    Matrona of Moscow

Mother Matrona is dearly loved by mothers who have seen first-hand the Elder’s ambulance service when their child fell ill. Believing mothers ask for petitions for surgery and for an adult son or daughter.

“Oh, blessed Mother Matrono, with your soul standing in heaven before the Throne of God, but with your body resting on earth, and with the grace given to you from above, exuding various miracles. Look now with your merciful eye on us, sinners, in sorrows, illnesses and sinful temptations, our waiting days, comfort us, desperate ones, heal our fierce ailments, from God we are allowed by our sins, deliver us from many troubles and circumstances, pray to our Lord Jesus Christ forgive us all our sins, iniquities and falls, with them we have sinned from our youth even to the present day and hour, and through your prayers having received grace and great mercy, we glorify in the Trinity the One God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen".

    Nicholas the Wonderworker

Saint Nicholas loved people so much that he is considered a “universal” saint. His love extends to all areas human life. He sympathized with all the suffering, the poor, the sick and the innocently accused. They also read a prayer to the Wonderworker before surgery.

It is advisable to ask loved ones to read the akathist to the saint during the operation. The help of the Pleasant of God will invisibly support the doctors and the patient:

“Oh, all-holy Nicholas, exceedingly saintly servant of the Lord, our warm intercessor, and everywhere in sorrow a quick helper! Help me, a sinner and sad person in this present life, beg the Lord God to grant me forgiveness of all my sins, which I have sinned greatly from my youth, in all my life, in deed, word, thought and all my feelings; and at the end of my soul, help me the accursed, beg the Lord God, the Creator of all creation, to deliver me from airy ordeals and eternal torment: may I always glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, and your merciful intercession, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen".

    Guardian Angel

At baptism, a Christian receives his personal guardian and intercessor before God. He accompanies him from baptism to doomsday. They ask their heavenly patron for God’s mercy, preservation of life and a speedy recovery.

A short prayer: “O Angel of God, my holy guardian, given to me from God from heaven for my protection! I diligently pray to you: enlighten me today, save me from all evil, guide me to good deeds, and direct me on the path of salvation. Amen".

A more complete version: “Holy Angel of Christ, falling to you I pray, my holy guardian, given to me for the protection of my sinful soul and body from Holy Baptism, but with my laziness and my evil custom I angered your most pure lordship and drove you away from me with all the cold deeds: lies, slander, envy, condemnation, contempt, disobedience, brotherly hatred, and resentment, love of money, adultery, rage, stinginess, gluttony without satiety and drunkenness, verbosity, evil thoughts and crafty, proud custom and lustful indignation, having self-desire for every carnal lust. How can you look at me, or approach me like a stinking dog? Whose eyes, Angel of Christ, look upon me, entangled in evil in vile deeds? How can I already ask for forgiveness with my bitter and evil and crafty deed, I fall into misery all day and night and at every hour? But I pray to you, falling down, my holy guardian, have mercy on me, a sinful and unworthy servant of yours (name), be me a helper and intercessor against the evil of my opponent, with your holy prayers, and make me a partaker of the Kingdom of God with all the saints, always, and now and ever and ever. Amen".

    Messages of thanks

After a successful operation, the believer brings prayers of thanks and praise to the Lord. When consciousness returns, they say: “Glory to Thee, God! ", "Virgin Mother of God, rejoice! " Then they thank the saints to whom they turned for help.

Thanks be to God: “Lord Jesus Christ our God, God of all mercy and generosity, whose mercy is immeasurable and whose love for mankind is an immeasurable abyss! We, falling before Your greatness, with fear and trembling, like unworthy slaves, bring thanks to You for the mercies shown to us. As the Lord, Master and Benefactor, we glorify You, praise You, sing and magnify You and, falling down, thank You again! We humbly pray to Your unspeakable mercy: just as now You have accepted our prayers and fulfilled them, so in the future let us succeed in love for You, for our neighbors and in all virtues - and grant us to always thank and glorify You, together with Your Beginning Father and Your All-Holy, and Good, and Consubstantial Spirit. Amen".

The full prayer is read in the hospital or at home, and service is ordered in church thanksgiving prayer. At the prayer service they pray for the person who has undergone surgery, for his loved ones and his attending physicians. Some people hand out small treats after the service, asking for prayers for health.

Another form of expressing gratitude would be reading the Akathist “Glory to God for everything.” If your health allows, you can go on pilgrimages, making donations in holy places.

The occurrence of the disease. Consultation with clinic doctors. The decision to hospitalize.

When you contact the doctors at the clinic for clarification about the illness that has arisen from you a prayer to God is required, asking the Lord to make them wise to make a correct diagnosis. Indeed, the success of treatment depends entirely on a correct diagnosis. Any doctor is a person more or less experienced in the art of medicine. But there are many factors that can lead to difficulty in diagnosis: the resolution of the equipment, the reliability and accuracy of the technique, the qualifications of the doctor, his experience and level of proficiency in diagnostic and treatment methods, his attentiveness and even his mood and state. And, of course, complete trust in the doctor on the part of the patient himself.

It is clear and natural that no one is immune from mistakes. Therefore, when you surrender yourself into the hands of a doctor, you must first surrender yourself into the hands of God. After prayer, when you told the Lord: “Thy will be done,” the doctor’s decision must be accepted as God’s Providence about you and your health, and, first of all, about the salvation of your soul. If after this you are offered hospitalization, treatment or surgery, your next step is to the temple of God.

On the eve of hospitalization

An Orthodox Christian must prepare himself for subsequent treatment in a hospital: he confesses (the sacrament of repentance), partakes of the Holy Mysteries of Christ, takes a blessing from the priest for the upcoming treatment, and asks for his prayers for himself. It is very godly if (if possible) a magpie for health is ordered, if relatives by agreement pray for the sick and suffering (prayer by agreement).

However, relatives should remember that church prayer for the sick is valid if accompanied by the prayer of those who ordered the service. Saint Theophan testifies to this as follows: “If no one sighs from the soul, then the prayer service will be crackled (it will be in vain). The same proskomedia... But do you yourself attend prayer services? If not, then your faith is silent... but, having given money so that others would pray, you yourself have thrown off all worries from your shoulders... It’s another matter when you yourself are at a prayer service, or in church at the liturgy, praying during the service... Then your illness is taken up by the prayer of the Church and quickly ascends to the Throne of God. .. and the very prayer of the Church makes it sick, although the servants are not sick... do you see what the power is?! Attend prayer services yourself, and ache in your soul for the sick." Commemoration at the liturgy, especially at the proskomedia and at the special litany, expresses our strongest faith and hope that the Lord will not abandon the sick with his help.

Prayer by agreement

“Lord our God, Jesus Christ, with Your most pure lips You told us: “If two of you on earth agree to ask for anything, then whatever they ask will be done for you by My Heavenly Father.” With deep faith in the immutability of Your words and Your immeasurable mercy, we ask You to hear Your servants (name the names of those asking), who have agreed to humbly ask You for Your needy (sick, lost, etc.) servant (name) - and grant him. make a request). However, not as we want, but as You, Lord; May Your holy will be done for everything. Amen."

This prayer is practiced based on this instruction in Holy Scripture: “Truly I also say to you that if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven, for where two or three are gathered in My name, there am I in the midst of them” (Matt. 18, 19-20), when, in some difficult situation: illness, misfortune, disaster, etc., two or more Christians agree together to pray intensely for the deliverance of someone from the misfortune that has befallen them. It is recommended to read it four times a day (morning, afternoon, evening and night), which you and those with whom you agreed to pray until, by the grace of the Lord, the request in prayer is fulfilled.

If only the prayer comes from loving hearts and with firm faith that the Lord hears it and, in His wisdom, will do what is best for the one or those for whom they are praying. Depending on the zeal of those praying and the condition of the one for whom they are praying, the frequency of saying prayers during the day is determined.

Hospitalization. Hospital stay

When preparing yourself for a stay in a medical institution, in addition to personal hygiene items, it is advisable to take with you a prayer book, a folding book or an icon with the image of the Savior or Mother of God and his namesake saint (his heavenly patron). If you feel the prayerful help of a saint (for example, St. Matrona), you can take this icon to feel more confident. Take holy oil and holy water in small vials. By erroneous opinion, many, when going to the hospital, take off their pectoral cross. This should not be done (!), since the Cross of Christ protects us and protects us from all troubles, misfortunes and demonic temptations. It is not good to hide icons (regardless of size) brought to the hospital in bedside tables or under pillows, as some do. Holy images should stand openly, at the head of the bed or on the windowsill. It is your right.

Prayer in the hospital

There is no special prayer rule for the hospital. If a person has the opportunity to read the morning and evening prayers in the ward or department, he must read them. If the state of health does not allow it, then the person, due to his weakness, depending on his condition, the postoperative course of the disease, reads as many prayers as he can. There are many wonderful prayers for the sick on behalf of the sick and for the sick, and you can also read the canon about the sick. There are also no special prayers read for doctors. Address God in your own words, most importantly with faith that the prayer is heard.

Some people find it difficult to follow the morning and evening prayer rules. It is better to get up, but, in order not to irritate other patients, sit by your bed in front of the Holy Image. You can read the rule to yourself. In the end, you can go out into the corridor, or to any other place in the department: there are a lot of secluded corners, and calmly read the prayer rule.

Unfortunately, many who enter the hospital, being formally baptized people and already in adulthood, do not know a single prayer. That's why you should try to convince the patient to have and read the most important prayers , including a prayer appeal to the holy great martyr and healer Panteleimon, who for over one and a half thousand years has been the patron saint of doctors of all specialties and the patron and healer of all the sick. The Lord does not require the same prayer rule from a sick person as if he were healthy. St. Tikhon says: “What kind of prayer is there for the sick? Thanksgiving and sighing. This is what replaces every feat.” St. Theophan the Recluse: “There is no sin in praying for recovery... But we must add” if the Lord wills!” (i.e. if you want, Lord). Complete submission to the Lord, with obedient acceptance of what is sent as good from the good Lord, and gives peace to the soul... and appeases the Lord... And He will either heal you or provide you with consolation, despite the deplorability of the situation.”

On the eve of the operation

The greatest suffering for souls comes from the news of the inevitability of surgical intervention. But everything from the hand of God must be accepted with humility and gratitude. After all, without the will of God, even a hair from a human head cannot fall, as the Lord Himself says. And then there's the whole operation. How to be? First you need to pray to the Lord to bless the operation, if He pleases; if you don’t want it to be taken away or postponed until a later time, that is, for the time when the operation will serve for good, for healing, and not for evil, not for complication or destruction. Having prayed like this, everything must then be accepted without complaint, for there is no prayer that is not heard by the Lord. And if the outcome of the operation is not so good, or not what you and the doctors expected, it means that God is pleased to allow you to continue to bear the cross of illness for the further purification of your soul. In the evening, on the eve of the operation (if it is planned), you should pray for all the doctors who will take part in the operation(surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and others) so that the Lord makes them His own hands, healing your body; read evening rule and go to bed.

In the morning, read the morning rule. From the moment the gurney arrives to take you to the operating room, constant prayer is required. You should pray with short prayers: “Lord, have mercy! Lord, bless!” When you are taken to the operating room, do not be embarrassed to make the sign of the cross and cross the operating table. What to do with a pectoral cross? Many anesthesiologists (doctors who provide anesthesia) force you to remove the cross. This is explained by several reasons. The first is if the anesthesiologist is an unbeliever; the second - for purely medical reasons: in the event of an unforeseen situation and the need for resuscitation, the cross on the chain cannot be torn off and cannot be cut with scissors, which creates practical inconvenience for the implementation of medical measures; the third - an expensive cross on a gold chain - a temptation for dishonest people, and the attending physician will have to answer for its loss. That's why, It is recommended to go for surgery with simple cross on an ordinary simple thread. If you are not allowed to have a cross on your neck, then it can easily be woven into your hair or tied to your hand or one of the fingers of your right hand.

There are cases when patients, for lack of any other option, drew a cross on their chest with a ballpoint pen (or iodine) or asked anesthesiologists to leave the cross on the anesthesia machine until the end of the operation. The most important thing is to “go into anesthesia” (fall asleep) with the prayer “Lord, have mercy!” or with the Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner,” and with a prayerful petition to your guardian angel (Holy Angel of God, my holy guardian, pray to God for me, a sinner). There are known cases when persons who “fell asleep” without prayers, even priestly rank, were attacked in an anesthetized “sleep” evil spirits. There is separate evidence of charming, “coding” of patients during anesthesia sleep by some doctors who have occult knowledge that is prohibited Orthodox Church. Only preliminary prayer and the sign of the cross protect against such and other troubles of the same kind. What should be the first words or thoughts of someone who has recovered from anesthesia? Praise be to God and thank Him for preserving life and for the operation: “Glory to Thee, God! Glory to Thee, God! Glory to Thee, God!” It is very helpful if you ask someone in the church to light a candle at the approximate time of your operation. And having recovered from the operation and strengthened physically, thank God and the Mother of God yourself by lighting candles.

Prayer before surgery

Master Almighty, Holy King, punish and do not kill, strengthen those who fall, and raise up the overthrown, correct bodily sorrows of people, we pray to You, our God, visit Your weak servant (name) with Your mercy, forgive him (her, me) every free sin and involuntary.

To her, Lord, Thy healing power was sent down from Heaven to direct the mind and hand of Thy servant the doctor (name of the doctor) so that he would perform the necessary surgery safely, as if the bodily ailment of Thy sick servant (name) was completely healed, and every hostile invasion would be driven far away from him.

Raise him from his sick bed and grant him health in soul and body, pleasing Thy Church. For You are a merciful God, and to You we send glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

A complication has developed. The time spent in the hospital was prolonged.

You keep getting sick and sick, but there is no outcome in sight, one body One grief pulled another one along with it. Is this really a coincidence?! The Lord, the Mother of God, the saints are near you, don’t they really see your suffering, and seeing why they make you languish. If they are love and truth, why allow this?

Put yourself in God's hands and wait. Everything is in God’s hands, and you are all fussing, restless, trying to outwit yourself. Stop doing this and lie quietly, complacently enduring what happened, thanking God for everything. Another thing is to calmly think about strengthening your patience. How to do it? In your case, it is appropriate to invite a priest to partake of the Holy Mysteries of Christ. If you are about to undergo a repeated major operation (especially abdominal or neurosurgical), you should receive unction and receive communion before the operation. Meanwhile, the attitude towards this, of course, great and gracious support for the patient is for some reason completely connected with the superstitious opinion that one who has been unctioned with oil must certainly die soon. Meanwhile, the sacrament of consecration of oil is one of the most beneficial sacraments of the Holy Church, which is performed on the sick for their recovery: physical, mental and spiritual.

After the operation, daily consumption of prosphora and holy water, anointing oneself with holy oil from the relics of saints of God or from Miracle-working icons promote a speedy recovery.

Prayer before useprosphora and holy water

Lord my God, may Your holy gift be: Your holy prosphora and Your holy water for the remission of my sins, for the enlightenment of my mind, for the strengthening of my mental and physical strength, for the health of my soul and body, for the subjugation of my passions and infirmities in the infinite Thy mercy through the prayers of Thy Most Pure Mother and all Thy saints. Amen.

Unexpectedly diagnosed with cancer

If you suddenly find yourself after being discharged from an oncologist, there is no need to lose heart and grumble. Regardless of whether the alleged diagnosis is confirmed or not, try to perceive this situation correctly, in a Christian way: as a kind of God’s mercy, when the Lord gives you time and a reason to think about Eternity, into which sooner or later from earthly, “temporary” life the immortal soul of each of us leaves. In what eternity it will go - into eternal bliss, or into eternal suffering - depends on us. From how they believed, from how they filled their faith with righteous deeds and repentance. The mercy of the Lord is so boundless that even at the end of our sinful earthly existence he is ready to grant us Salvation: if our prayers were warm and strong, our repentance would be deep and sincere, our love for our neighbor would actually become visible. And, most importantly, there would only be time left for all this! The bigger, the better. That is why even such a situation should be perceived with thanksgiving to God, as his saving, advance answer to your prayer requests for a “shameless Christian death.” So that sudden weakness, which can lead to the death of the body, does not take the soul by surprise. In any case - no matter how many years, months and days the Lord gives you now - this is unconditional. God's Call to Recognize the Time of Strengthened and More frequent prayers, good deeds and deepened repentance, combined with more frequent Communion of the Holy Mysteries of Christ (in agreement with the confessor).

About fasting in hospital conditions

Often this question serves as a stumbling block for Christians, a source of temptation for medical staff and a subject of disobedience for confessors. The cross of illness is intended, first of all, to cleanse the soul, so that it is enriched with the spirit of meekness, the spirit of kindness, mercy, love and the spirit of other Christian virtues. The meaning of any fast is hunger and compassion with Christ and for Christ, and not blind oppression of oneself only in food. Illness replaces fasting, and if it is endured with thanksgiving to God, then it is accepted by him as equivalent to fasting, and often even higher. Whoever endures it with patience, thanking God, through patience receives the fruit of his salvation. Instead of weakening the strength of the body by fasting, it is already weakened by illness. Thus, the most reasonable thing for a sick person would be not to do his own will, but to fulfill the commandments of the Holy Fathers, and eat everything that is given in the hospital canteen and that is brought, in agreement with the attending physician, by relatives.

Health and illness

St. Theophan the Recluse says: “God sends something as a punishment, as penance, another as a discipline, so that a person comes to his senses; another, to save him from the trouble that a person would fall into if he were healthy; another, so that a person shows patience and deserves all the more reward; other, to cleanse from some passion, and for many other reasons... There are diseases, the healing of which the Lord imposes a ban on when he sees that illness is more necessary for salvation than health.... If you feel and see that you yourself are guilty, then start with repentance and regret before God for not taking care of the gift of health He gave you. And then, nevertheless, reduce it to the fact that illness is from the Lord, and nothing happens by chance. And after this, thank the Lord again . Illness humbles, softens the soul and eases its usual burden from many worries... The Lord takes away strength in order to at least calm a person down. He no longer knows how to fix it any other way. And mercies, and sorrowful visits - everything has been re-experienced, and everything is of no use ".

Anyone recovering from an illness, especially after a serious and dangerous one, must feel and say: “I have been granted reprieve from Above, so that I may repent and correct my life according to the commandments of Christ.” Amen.

Prayer of thanksgivingupon healing from illness (St. John of Kronstadt)

Glory to Thee, Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of the beginningless Father, who alone heals every ailment and every illness among people, for you have had mercy on me as a sinner and delivered me from my illness, not allowing it to develop and kill me according to my sins. Grant me from now on, Master, the strength to firmly do Your will for the salvation of my damned soul and for Your glory with Your beginningless Father and Your consubstantial Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayers to God and various saints before an operation, which is a difficult test for the soul and body of the patient, will help to internally gather, calm down, and tune in to a positive outcome. You can pray not only for yourself, but also for your family and friends, for your children who are awaiting surgical intervention.

The choice of prayers that can be read before surgery is very large. Many people have favorite saints who have helped them more than once. Those who are going to read prayers for the first time are guided by the most famous saints, who are known among the people as healers. These include Panteleimon the Healer, Saint Luke, Matrona, Saint Nicholas, Agapit of Pechersk. You can also pray to your guardian angel.

      • How to pray before surgery?

First of all, one should not grumble at God because the illness was sent undeservedly. Infirmities are sent by God not only as punishment for sins. Words of the Creator: “My strength is made perfect in weakness.” The great Russian saint Seraphim of Sarov said: “Health is a gift of God.” And another Saint Mark the Ascetic said: “If you see someone who sins, never repents in his life and has never been sick, know that an merciless judgment awaits him.”

When an operation is scheduled, then, placing hopes on the mercy of God, you need to ask for a blessing for this manipulation, because everything that happens to a person is done according to the will of God. After praying, you need to be internally sure that the Lord hears your prayers, and not a single hair from a person’s head will fall without His holy will.

On the eve of the operation, you should ask God to bless the hands of surgeons, assistants, anesthesiologists and all personnel who will participate in the operation. May the Lord give you strength, knowledge and ability to accomplish your plans the best way and grants healing. If possible, it is advisable to visit the temple a few days in advance and order a prayer service for a good deed. The note of names indicates not only the name of the person being operated on, but also the names of the doctors.

While moving to the operating room, you can recite the following prayers:

        • A short prayer: “Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me.”
        • “Lord, I am in Your hands, have mercy on me according to Your will and, if it benefits me, heal me.”
        • Troparion of the canon to the Guardian Angel in Russian: “Angel of God, my holy guardian, keep my life in the fear of Christ God, establish my mind in the true path, and wound my soul to the love on high, and guided by you, I will receive great mercy from Christ God.” .

You can and should also pray in your own words, because the most sincere and fervent prayer is the one that comes from the heart.

When the patient is taken to the operating room, it will be appropriate to cross yourself. You can also bless the place where the operation was performed. If the pectoral cross needs to be removed from the neck, you can attach it to the wrist. As a last resort, you can put it where it will not interfere with the work of doctors. If you are under general anesthesia, while falling asleep, you can say a short prayer Jesus Christ, Mother of God, saints or Guardian Angel. You can read a prayer to yourself until you lose consciousness. If the anesthesia is local and the person being operated on is conscious, then you can read the prayers that he knows during the entire operation. If the patient is accompanied by relatives, you can ask them to read any chosen akathist or canon during the operation.

Surgeries on vital organs are considered especially difficult cases. During heart surgery, it is necessary to involve all your caring friends so that they can prayerfully participate in the treatment and successful recovery.

After the operation is completed, when consciousness returns, you should thank God according to the words of the Apostle Paul: “Give thanks in everything.”

        Prayer by agreement

As you know, joint prayer is always heard by the Lord. It is necessary to ask all loved ones to participate in prayer by agreement. To do this, everyone agrees to simultaneously pray for a specific need at the icon of the saint. The text and rules of prayer are in Orthodox prayer books.

For those who are lonely or do not have Christian acquaintances on the Internet, there is an option to pray with other people who are faced with similar problems. A list of names is distributed to all participants, after which prayer begins at the appointed time.

        Prayer to Saint Luke

Luka (in the world Valentin) Voino-Yasenetsky was at one time a famous surgeon. Today's doctors also use his manuals on purulent surgery. The saint treated not only bodily illnesses, but also souls. A healer had to combine two missions in life: to be a doctor and a priest. Contemporaries said that Valentin Voino-Yasenetsky had hands from God. His successful operations were legendary. Throughout his medical career, the saint did not abandon his church duties. Before any operation, the saint overshadowed sign of the cross the patient and everyone involved. He always did this, regardless of the patient’s religion, saying that although religions are different, God is one. Some time later, after the death of his wife, Luke accepted the monastic feat. It was named in honor of the holy Apostle of Christ Evangelist Luke.

Since the saint healed illnesses during his lifetime, he helps now with his holy intercession. Orthodox Christians pray to the saint for health, during and after the operation, for its successful completion and for a successful recovery. You need to consciously turn to the saint in prayer. They read the prayer rule not mechanically, but heartily and with faith, asking for good.

For prayer you will need the image of Christ the Savior, at the request of the Mother of God, the Guardian Angel and St. Luke of Crimea. In icon shops at churches there is a wide range of so-called “warehouses”. These are folding icons that combine several images.

In a place where it is convenient, where you feel a prayerful mood, you should say prayers to the saint out loud or silently. If you have difficulties understanding the Church Slavonic text, you need to find a version in Russian, since understanding what is spoken is very important.

Text of the prayer to Saint Luke:

How to pray before your child's surgery?

If a loved one or child is about to undergo surgery, you should try to use all your spiritual strength for prayerful support during such a difficult period. For moral support, it would be useful to study the numerous testimonies of the help of saints in operations and treatment. Someone else's experience may be useful and will tell you where it is better to go, where the relics of revered saints are located and miraculous springs are located.

There are many testimonies when, following the prayer of the Mother of God in the image of “The All-Tsarina” and pouring water from a life-giving source, miracles occurred. Without surgery, patients were cured of cancer, fibroids on the uterus disappeared, and surgery was avoided.

For a successful outcome of the operation and complete recovery, you should constantly ask, tearfully and tirelessly praying to God and heavenly patrons. It would be appropriate to seek help from godfather and the child's mother. Their duties include praying for the child entrusted to them for Christian care. In the church, prayer intensifies many times over, since the whole church prays for all the baptized people written in the note. You need to submit lists of names about health, order a “magpie” and a prayer service.

Magpies are special strong prayer, which is read in the temple every day for 40 days.

        Prayers to Saint Matrona

The holy old woman born blind, Matrona of Moscow, is considered a special intercessor of children. The ascetic was born crippled and was the fifth child in the family. Middle-aged parents wanted to leave the girl in a shelter, but the mother in labor dreamed prophetic dream. In a dream, an unearthly snow-white bird appeared and sat on the mother’s chest. After a clear divine instruction to leave their daughter, they changed their minds. From the age of eight, it was noticed that the girl had the gift of healing. A line of people who were suffering and wishing for recovery reached out to the girl. In addition, while still a child, she could foresee the future. From the age of seventeen, the saint of God lost the ability to walk, but this did not cause her to grumble or make her angry. The saint answered that it was so pleasing to the Lord. Upon moving to Moscow, the saint received free of charge a large number of petitioners, and through her prayers people received what they asked for.

Before her death, the blessed one left a covenant so that after her death people would come to her and ask - she would definitely hear and help. Through the prayers of Saint Matrona, many miracles and healings happen even to unbelievers and people of other faiths. In the Church of the Intercession, where the relics of the saint are located, evidence of healing is recorded.

Text of the prayer to Matrona of Moscow:

Prayer to Panteleimon the Healer for health

Saint Panteleimon is considered the most powerful heavenly healer. According to legend, the young man studied the art of medicine and visited a Christian presbyter every day, who taught him the faith. Once, while walking down the street, the saint saw a child being bitten by an echidna, after which the child fell dead. The young man prayed to the Lord, asking for the resurrection of the boy and the death of the poisonous snake. He told himself he would accept holy baptism, if his requests are heard. A miracle happened, the child stood up healthy, and the snake burst - only pieces remained of it. After this event, the young man was baptized and devoted his life to healing the sick, helping the poor and poor.

And also a video of prayer to Panteleimon the Healer:

        Prayer to Saint Nicholas

Those who consider Saint Nicholas only the patron saint of travelers and children will be interested to know that the saint also helps the sick. According to the testimonies left behind, already during his lifetime the saint raised seriously ill people to their feet. Prayer to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker before surgery or during the recovery process helps everyone. It is often used by mothers when praying for their child. There are many prayers to the holy wonderworker. You should choose the one that is closest and most suitable to the situation.

Prayer to Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker:

        Prayers after surgery

When a patient is in the hospital recovering and has the strength to read, the opportunity to pray morning and evening should not be missed. In Orthodox prayer books you can find morning and evening rules. These are obligatory prayers for Orthodox Christians throughout their lives. Having thanked the Almighty for the completion of the operation, you can ask for a speedy recovery with these words:

When the strength of the recovering person is strengthened, it is imperative to visit the temple and worship service, as well as order a thanksgiving prayer service.

Do not hesitate to ask God for help - He is the only one who will always help. The main condition is faith in God and that He will definitely hear the prayers of those asking - then the illnesses will go away. The Lord is omnipotent, He is able to send healing just as easily as He can send illness.

Any special prayer in case surgery does not exist, but a Christian can and should prepare for such an event.

What to take with you to the hospital

A Christian must remember: illness is sent by God precisely so that a person can escape from the everyday bustle and think about the eternal. This is how you should perceive your condition. Often to modern man There is not enough time to read the Gospel, the works of the Fathers of the Church, other books of spiritual content, or to think calmly. The disease provides such an opportunity - and we must take advantage of it.

You can ask your loved ones to pray for the sick person - for this there is special prayer"About the sick." They can also order a prayer service at the temple.

On the eve of the operation, you need to not only read the usual evening prayers, but also pray for the doctors and nurses who will operate and assist. On the morning of surgery, you need to pray as usual, and then repeat from time to time short prayers: "Lord have mercy! God bless! Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner!”

If the doctor insists that the patient remove the pectoral cross during the operation, there is no need to argue - perhaps this is really necessary. In this case, you can help.

There is no need to be like those people who cry out to God when things are difficult for them and forget about Him as soon as the danger has passed. After leaving the hospital, you should definitely visit the temple and thank the Almighty for your healing. At the same time, you definitely need to pray for the doctors.

Ask any person what prayer is, and everyone, without thinking too much, will answer that it is an appeal to God, to To the Higher Powers asking for help in difficult moments. Difficult moments in human life are diseases, especially those that involve surgery.

And this is understandable: to a normal person It’s always scary when he is “turned off” from life through anesthesia, even for a while. No, no, and the thought will creep in: what if the anesthesiologist makes a mistake? What if I don’t wake up? Is the surgeon experienced enough? shows that in such situations even the most inveterate skeptics often begin to pray. What prayer should you read during surgery?

Which saints should I contact?

Traditionally it is believed that intercessors for the sick - martyrs-healers:

  • Panteleimon.
  • His teacher Ermolai.
  • Miracle Workers Cosma and Damian.
  • Cyrus and John.
  • Canonized literally at the end of the last century St. Luka Krymsky, who during his lifetime was both an operating surgeon and a bishop.
  • If surgery is being performed on a child or mother, it is best to contact Mother of God.
  • They also turn to other saints, to whom they are accustomed to pray on all occasions in life and to whom the soul is especially disposed - St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Blessed Moscow, St. Spyridon of Trimifuntsky, martyr Tryphon, Archangel Raphael.

However, in any case, we must remember that the saints of God have no “specialization”: this one, they say, is “responsible” for this, that one is responsible for that. This is how they appear in folk tradition.

The saints are only intermediaries in transmitting our worldly petitions to the Lord Almighty: we bring our prayers to them, and they intercede for those praying before the Heavenly Father, in this case asking Him for healing. Therefore, it is most logical to ask the Savior for this.

How to pray?

It is easiest to give recommendations about prayers before an upcoming operation. A man is preparing for a responsible event. He needs to visit, confess and receive communion, and forgive his offenders. This is important not only for the future patient himself in the sense of his peace of mind, but also to the Guardian Angel who cares for him - after all, he also prays for health, and it is much easier to pray for those who do not carry a stone in their bosom.

Believers usually take a blessing from the priest so that the operation is successful. and also ask to pray for their recovery.

When preparing to come to the hospital, it is a good idea to order a magpie about health for the patient. This can be done the day before by the patient himself or by one of his relatives. In many monasteries the Indestructible Psalter is read, and this prayer for health can also be ordered. Both serve for forty days, so it will cover both the time of the operation itself and the period after it.

Upon entering the hospital, on the eve of the operation, before going to bed, reading the evening rule, you must include in it a prayer for the operating surgeon and all the medical personnel who will be involved in the process. Morning - greet with reading morning rule and pray until the operating table.

Appeal to the great healers

When there are health problems for themselves or their relatives, first of all, people turn to Saint Panteleimon.

Prayer to the Holy Great Martyr Panteleimon during surgery:

Oh, great saint of Christ, passion-bearer and merciful physician Panteleimon! Have mercy on me, a sinful slave, hear my groaning and cry, propitiate the heavenly, supreme Physician of our souls and bodies, Christ our God, may He grant me healing from the illness that oppresses me. Accept the unworthy prayer of the most sinful man above all. Visit me with a gracious visit. Do not disdain my sinful sores, anoint them with the oil of your mercy and heal me; May I, healthy in soul and body, be able to spend the rest of my days, by the grace of God, in repentance and pleasing to God and be worthy of receiving a good end to my life.

Hey, servant of God! Pray to Christ God, that through your intercession he may grant health to my body and salvation to my soul. Amen.

Prayer Luka Krymsky about health during surgery:

Like a bright and sparkling star, you illuminate our path with your virtues. your angelic, your holy rank, we pray to you. The godless subjected you to persecution and brought suffering upon you. Your faith was unshakable; you did not deprive the suffering of your help and affection. Your medical wisdom entered homes with healing. We bow before your face, we bend our knees before your relics, we glorify your body and spirit. We praise your deeds. We pray that you grant us healing and strengthen our health. Amen.

What prayer should I say?

If surgery is not performed under general anesthesia. You can read all known prayers; you can contact specific saints with a request for successful outcome operations; You can express your prayer in your own words - with faith and hope.

Good to learn by heart about assistance during surgery:

Master Almighty, Holy King, punish and do not kill, strengthen those who fall, and raise up the overthrown, correct bodily sorrows of people, we pray to You, our God, visit Your weak servant (name) with Your mercy, forgive him every sin, voluntary and involuntary. To her, Lord, Thy healing power was sent down from heaven, to guide the mind and hand of Thy servant the doctor (name), so that he would perform the necessary surgery safely, as if the bodily ailment of Thy sick servant (name) was completely healed, and every hostile invasion would be driven far away from him. . Raise him from his sick bed and grant him health in soul and body to Thy Church, pleasing and doing Thy will. It is Yours to have mercy and to save, our God, and to You we send glory, to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

If the operation is to be performed using general anesthesia, it is recommended to literally read the short and very effective Jesus Prayer before falling into a narcotic sleep: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner!”, or just repeat: "Lord have mercy! God bless!, or contact your Guardian Angel.

Do not hesitate to cross yourself and cross your operating bed before lying on the operating table.

The prayer of loved ones for a sick person undergoing surgery is also of great importance. As a rule, its time is known, so it would not be superfluous to light a candle for health at this hour; If there is a service in the church, order a prayer service.

Considered strong common prayer by agreement on the successful outcome of the operation, which can be read at the appointed time by several close people:

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, Thou hast declared with Thy most pure lips: “Amen, I say to you, that if two of you take counsel on earth about every thing, and if you ask for it, you will have it from My Father who is in Heaven: where are the two? or three gathered in My name, I am I in the midst of them.” Thy words are immutable, O Lord, Thy mercy is unconditional and Thy love for mankind has no end. For this reason, we pray to Thee: grant to us, Thy servants (names), who have agreed to ask Thee (request), the fulfillment of our request. But not as we want, but as You want. Thy will be done forever. Amen.

Rules

Any prayer requires special attention and concentration. The morning and evening prayer rules are read in front of the icons, if possible - out loud, if not - silently. The situation will tell you how to read them in the hospital, the main thing is that they are read thoughtfully, without irritation, in a calm mood. If your roommates do not object, read the prayers out loud - it will benefit them too.

  • Prayer, both for yourself and for loved onemust be extremely sincere and heartfelt, and every word she says is balanced and meaningful.
  • Praying during surgery focuses on conversation with the saint, to whom he turns, all his thoughts are with him.
  • A prayer appeal to a saint should not be a one-time thing. Many people recommend reading the selected prayer 40 times. Often people read it constantly - until they fall into a deep narcotic sleep.
  • When preparing for an operation, we must understand that illnesses befall us not “for something,” but for “something”: this means that the Lord considers it necessary to enlighten us in this way, to teach us a lesson in patience and humility. And therefore, this lesson must be accepted, no matter how paradoxical it may seem, with gratitude and faith in the mercy of God. A simple and short “formula” “Thy will be done” will help you accept the situation with dignity.
  • In the hours and minutes before the operation, being in a prayerful mood, in no case should you remember grievances, scold, blame, and especially curse anyone, even suspecting him of malice. Reconciliation with offenders is a direct path to recovery.
  • We must take the spoken words of prayer seriously and thoughtfully. This is why it is necessary to distinguish true prayer from conspiracies, spells that turn the patient rather to pagan examples of folklore.

Conspiracies often use definitions and comparisons that have nothing to do with true faith, and sometimes contradictory requests. So, in one of them, in an appeal to Jesus Christ, it is said: “Jesus, just as you were taken down from the cross, so take me off the operating table.” The ambiguity of the phrase is obvious, but many people pronounce it that way without thinking about it.

  • Prayer assumes that the person asking sincerely repents of his sins, of which many have accumulated over a lifetime.

Did it seem to you that what you asked for was not fulfilled to the extent that you would like? This is also not for us, mere mortals, to judge, but we definitely cannot lose faith. Prayer strengthens the connection between the Almighty and human souls. Of course, prayer does not work instantly, like a painkiller, but it helps to create an attitude of faith and trust in the Lord and healers working for His glory.
