If you have multiple characters around you when you're in the workshop, or they're working with you on multiple missions, each will react differently to the character's actions.

If you want to improve your relationship with a companion or love interest, you should travel with them as often as possible so that they observe your behavior more often. If you're going to do something they won't like, it's best to send them away. Their field of view is quite small, so you can command them to stay put from a distance, but sometimes they can see you through walls. Save your game before attempting such actions.

Each time your relationship status with companions increases, a message will appear on the screen (such as "Piper tolerates you") and the characters will want to talk to you, which allows you to get to know them better.
