What subjects should I take to become an economist? What do they study at the Faculty of Economics?

Details

The profession of an economist is extremely important. Important and popular. What subjects should applicants applying to universities take to become an economist, how easy is it to get in, and what are the prospects for a graduate? Let's find out.

The labor market offers a sufficient number of vacancies for economists with higher education. Therefore, if you have chosen this profession for yourself, you can rest assured that you will not be left without work. You can get an economic education at both a higher and a secondary vocational educational institution.

But in order to be confident in your career advancement, you must obtain a higher education. And in order to successfully pass the entrance examination to a university, you need to know what subjects you need to take to become an economist.

Economist: subjects for admission

Competition for economics faculties is consistently high. The popularity of economics is justified by the wide scope of application of such education. In order to successfully pass the competition for admission to a university, you need to start preparing for admission already in high school.

The standard set of subjects to be taken as an economist includes three subjects. These are mathematics, Russian language and social studies/social studies/history. To get into a budget place, you need to focus on the required exams. The highest possible score in Russian and mathematics will allow, if necessary, to compensate for lower scores in social studies.

Mathematics is the most necessary subject of those that need to be taken as an economist and for any economic specialties, since they are based on analytics and carrying out the necessary calculations. Therefore, this subject is specialized. Without knowing mathematics, you will not be able to work as an economist, just as you will not be able to enroll in the Faculty of Economics.

Admission will be difficult for those who have problems with this subject. Mathematics is a compulsory subject required to become an economist. You will have to hand it over in any case. Russian language is also a mandatory exam. You need to pass this subject as well as possible.

What other subjects should I take to become an economist?

Social studies is the third additional subject for the vast majority of economic specialties. Especially for those related to management, management, global economics, and politics. Sometimes, instead of social studies, Russian history may be taken into account when applying for admission.

Also, in some universities, the list of subjects to take for economics often includes English as an additional third subject. As a rule, these are universities with specialties related to the global economy, such as MGIMO, etc. Such universities prepare their students for the modern realities of an open foreign policy. If you are planning to go to such a university, worry in advance about your knowledge of a foreign language at a good level. Without it, it will be impossible to enter there. Excellent knowledge of mathematics will not help you here.

However, there is a loophole. Many universities regularly hold specialized Olympiads for schoolchildren in order to carry out some selection among them at a preliminary stage, to prepare them for choosing a profession. Participation in the Olympiad allows you not only to test your knowledge, but also to understand to some extent whether you want to do this particular thing. Winning the Olympics is a big plus for admission.

She provides a budget place at the Faculty of Economics. This greatly helps schoolchildren determine their choice in advance, even before taking the Unified State Exam. When passing the Unified State Exam, in this case, it will be enough to score above average, but not necessarily maximum, since the selection committee will primarily take into account the results of the Olympiad.

This is not so simple, since such an Olympiad will require serious knowledge of economic theory. The student must be familiar with the basic concepts of building an economy, know the basic economic models and their functioning. It is desirable to have knowledge in the field of finance and credit, management.

If you decide to enroll in a technical university to major in economics, the subjects for admission may also include physics, which, however, is quite rare. This may happen if the specialty is related to the production process or technology. But, nevertheless, it is worth focusing on three main subjects - mathematics, Russian language and history/social studies.

Also, as the most reasonable advice, we can say that it is best to find out what subjects are needed to enroll in economics in advance by writing or calling the admissions office of the chosen university. And preferably several years before admission, and not a year before admission. We also recommend that you study the website of the chosen university and clarify any questions that are unclear to you in advance.

When choosing between a specialized economics university and an economics department, you need to keep in mind that if it is better to choose a specialized university for a career in economics. Since, if you study, say, at a mechanical engineering university, then your economic education will be focused on this industry.

Despite the fact that many young people want to become economists, those who are truly motivated will definitely be able to fulfill their dream. You just need to score the maximum number of possible points for yourself on the Unified State Exam and be confident in yourself.

All in your hands. Everything is in your power. And the actions here are simple - at least study well, and in those subjects that need to be taken as an economist - study excellently. And then there will be no problems with admission!

mathematics, social studies and Russian

Answer from Ksenia Lazareva[guru]
In 2009, you need to pass 3 exams: Mathematics, Russian Language, Social Studies.
From 2010 it is planned to add English to these 3 exams.
But personally, from my point of view, I think that for professional activities it is better to focus on mathematics, from the point of view of the basic vital need for competent speech and business communication - it is useful to know the Russian language well; English is also quite necessary, but as for social studies, it is only necessary to get admitted, and then at the institute it is no longer essential.
I recommend enrolling here if you want to be closer to home and don’t want to go to Moscow universities:

Universities sometimes name their curriculum with the word “economics,” but the specialty there is not economics at all. Whatever the name of the profile, look carefully to ensure that the specialty code is 03/38/01.
The undergraduate major "Economics" has more than a hundred profiles link
It is clear that exams will be different in different universities for different profiles. All of them require the Unified State Exam in the Russian language, almost all in Mathematics. The third exam varies: Social Studies, Foreign Language, History, Physics, Computer Science.

To choose a future profession, you need to listen to yourself. As a rule, a person is drawn to a certain field of activity. If economics is an attractive branch of life for you, then it makes sense to make it your profession. This is beneficial because specialists earn a lot of money. Although some people believe that there are too many economists, and good workers are worth their weight in gold.

An economist is one of the most important specialists of any enterprise. Without it, not a single financial investment or plan for the future can be made. To get into university, you need to know what subjects you will have to take.

To successfully enter a prestigious institute, you need to study some disciplines in depth in advance. The question of what subjects need to be taken to become an economist is relevant every year, since there are a lot of people who want to get an education in this direction. Pay attention to the following disciplines:

  • Mathematics. This subject is important for any economist, because this profession is directly related to numbers, graphs, formulas and statistics. If math is too difficult for you, consider choosing a different profession.
  • Russian language. The subject is mandatory for admission to any major, but for an economist it is of particular importance. This is due to the fact that people in this profession have to communicate and write letters a lot. The delivery of a speech and the competence of a specialist can either attract partners for the company or repel them.
  • Social science. The discipline is not difficult, but an economist must be fully developed.
  • Foreign language. Recently, employers have been reluctant to enter into contracts with specialists who do not know a foreign language. This especially applies to economists. Any self-respecting company considers its pride to be employees who know how to conduct a dialogue with foreigners.

To find out for sure which subjects you need to take to become an economist at the educational institution you want to enroll in, it is better to call the admissions office and personally discuss the issues of interest with a representative of the institute.

What you will have to face at the institute

If you manage to pass, you will soon realize that you have only completed the easiest part of the path. The basic subjects in preparing an economist at the institute are much more difficult than any preliminary tests.

You will have to study philosophy, political science, languages, microeconomics, macroeconomics, various applied economic sciences, investment activities, and this is not a complete list, since the availability of additional subjects depends on the specialty for which you have entered. After all, there are a lot of varieties of the economist profession.

To become a competent specialist, you need to develop the following personal qualities:

  • Ability to identify relevant information and analyze it.
  • Memory.
  • The ability to concentrate on the right things.
  • Patience.
  • Sociability.
  • Ability to organize a team.

Of course, your chances of getting into university do not depend on these qualities, but they will affect your success in what you love.

Advantages and disadvantages of the profession

When you are interested in what subjects you need to take to become an economist, do not forget to analyze the features of this specialization to make sure that you want to receive such an education. The advantage of the profession is that financiers have been and remain the most sought-after specialists in the labor market.

But there are also disadvantages:

  • Work experience is often required during interviews. It is difficult for a beginner to get it.
  • It will take a lot of time to develop skills.

If economics is your dream, then you will undoubtedly find yourself in this field of activity.

As for Ukraine, graduates take the External National Examination. The EIT certificates required for this specialty depend on the specialty (there are differences between economists and economists). In the field of preparation Economic Theory, Personnel Management and Labor Economics, Finance and Credit, Accounting and Auditing, certificates are required: Ukrainian language and literature, mathematics and history of Ukraine or geography (to choose from).

International economics - Ukrainian language and literature, mathematics, history of Ukraine or geography.

Everything increasingly depends on the university where you want to enroll, since entrance exams change every year, and you can only find out about this directly at the institution where you want to enroll. I know that disciplines such as mathematics and language are the main ones when passing, and additional ones go to choose from, either history or geography.

Unfortunately, the Ukrainian mass media report rather contradictory information about the state’s need for economic specialists. Some declare a significant surplus of them for several decades to come, while others elevate this profession to the top of the most in demand. Turning to the list of vacancies on the labor market, I discovered that there is still a demand for specialists in the field of economics in the state, but it is:

    • not too high, for example, in Kyiv there are only a few hundred vacancies;
    • mainly in new, small companies;
    • Minimum 1 year work experience required.

So, if, after reading all of the above, you still decide to enroll in the Faculty of Economics, you need to pass the External Examination in the following subjects: Ukrainian language and literature, mathematics - mandatory, and also, depending on the higher educational institution and specialization, optionally: history of Ukraine, geography, foreign language, or chemistry.

When I enrolled in economics, I had to take mathematics, so high that even the institute teacher could not solve the problem.

The second most compulsory subject was Russian language.

Now everything is much simpler. The Unified State Examination in mathematics, Russian and social studies must be passed in order to enroll in economics.

For the economist It is very important to be able to do calculations and analysis well. Mathematics teaches this. An economist must also be able to competently compose business papers, reports and analytical notes. To do this you need to have a good command of the Russian language. And further economist should have a fairly broad outlook in order to understand the processes that take place in society.

From here those follow subjects to be taken as an economist: mathematics, Russian language and social studies.

When I entered the Faculty of Economics (Republic of Belarus), the required subjects were Russian, mathematics and a foreign language. And despite the fact that this was more than 10 years ago, nothing has changed now.

There is now an economics department at almost every university, whether it is focused on agriculture or training heavy engineering engineers. So the mandatory list of mathematics and the state language can be supplemented with a choice of other subjects, for example foreign languages. language, social studies or even history. Be sure to check the information with the institution where you are going to enroll.

To enter a university at the Faculty of Economics, you will need to pass several exams in subjects such as mathematics, the Russian language exam is also required, and social studies.

All future economists must take mathematics and the Russian language (like all graduates), social studies or a foreign language to choose from. However, some universities require passing both social studies and a foreign language. Find out more precisely at each university; usually everything is written on the official websites.

Mathematics and Russian are compulsory subjects.

Social studies, English is an additional requirement. subjects. (for applicants after 11th grade)

To obtain certification in economic specialties, you must pass mathematics, Russian language and social studies. When entering some faculties, for example, world economics, also a foreign language and history (or geography).

In order to enter the economics department of any university, you must pass three subjects in the Unified State Examination form: mathematics (you can easily guess that this is the main subject), Russian language and social studies.
