Returned

"The Returned" is an immersive show using immersive technology. Instead of a stage, four floors of a mansion are used, where everyone determines their own path. Spectators wear masks and participate in the show, which lasts up to three hours and is strictly 18+.

Description

The “highlight” of the show can be called the unique technologies for working with actors and space from American directors Victor Karin and Mia Zanetti. Before the opening of The Returned, the actors spent a long time mastering unusual methods of interacting with the audience. During this time, dozens of secret labyrinths and doors were also created in the mansion.

Guests are necessarily divided into groups, and the entrance to the mansion is initially divided into three streams with a 30-minute interval.

This distribution helps to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the performance. Complete immersion occurs due to modern lighting and sound effects. Therefore, pregnant women and people suffering from claustrophobia or epilepsy should not attend the show.

The immersive show “The Returned,” which premiered in Moscow on December 1, 2016, has been extended for a new season. Immersion is a new concept for the Russian public; it involves the viewer’s complete immersion in the action of the performance, the freedom of choice to independently determine their own path, build their own story and react to what is happening. The format originated in New York. “The Returned” is the first in Russia and only the fourth successful project in the world of this genre, comparable in scale to the famous shows in New York and Shanghai. In the new season, the creators of the project, in their characteristic manner, have prepared new surprises for the sophisticated Moscow public. The acting team will be enriched with stars who will first undergo special training under the strict guidance of the creators and authors of the project. New faces in the acting team are called upon to reveal the plot twists and meaning of the play by the Norwegian classic in a new way. The first to take part in the production, which has captivated the Moscow public, will be theater and film actress Kristina Asmus. Before the start, spectators find themselves in a waiting area where there is a real bar, where they can have a drink and a snack before a difficult journey that threatens emotional shock. After this, they are given masks and given detailed instructions: do not take off the masks, remain silent, do not touch anyone, but be prepared to be touched. The Returned is distilled immersive theatre. This is now the customary name in Russia for all fashionable interactive productions. But in its pure form, such “immersiveness,” that is, the immersion and involvement of viewers in what is happening, as it was conceived in America back in the last century, has probably not been shown here before. That is, there were successful experiments, but here all the laws of the genre were observed almost for the first time with precision, as in the New York production of Sleep No More, exemplary for this kind of performance, by the famous British group Punchdrunk.

The producers of our show Vyacheslav Dusmukhametov and choreographer Miguel decided to invite foreigners to stage the play. The directors of “The Returned” are Americans who spent six months in Moscow, accustomed our actors, and then us, the audience, to a new type of theater for our country. To do this, a mansion in the center of Moscow, where a bank with plasterboard was previously located, was completely vacated and brought into historical form, that is, the atmosphere of a mysterious house from the end of the century before last was recreated, where bad things happen on different floors. Viewers are masked and encouraged to walk through these living rooms, rooms, closets, laundry rooms and mysterious spaces and are left to explore the space for themselves. And this is where that ideal immersiveness manifests itself, when no one leads the audience by the hand, they themselves decide where to go, which storyline to follow, which hero to join. That is, complete freedom is provided, which may even make many viewers feel uncomfortable and unpleasant, because it is in the psychology of our people that they are led somewhere by someone. But here you have to do it yourself, real democracy.

Inside the house, different scenes take place over the course of three hours, the characters of Ibsen’s play wander through the rooms, then unite at one point, for example, in the dining room, where the main action takes place, as in a real psychological theater. At the same time, the viewer can simply wander chaotically; there are even many hidden rooms and labyrinths. You can find something interesting for yourself, spy on the characters, living and dead, watch rather explicit scenes, for example, young people who indulge in an orgy in a laundry room (all this is a spectacular choreographic scene that may recall an erotic scene from “Titanic” , thanks to fogged windows). But you have to be prepared, because someone might suddenly grab you by the hand, take you somewhere to a separate place, blindfold you…. But I won’t give away all the secrets of this mansion; this interaction, for example, happened to me, and it was very unusual, and I wish the same for you.

The most rational move for the viewer is to choose any character and follow him. For the late Captain Alving, the mistress of the house Fru Alving, or their son Oswald, who arrived from Paris, or for the maid Regina, who ultimately turns out to be a noble lady and the illegitimate daughter of that same dissolute captain, who turned out to be not at all pious, but quite a dubious person. But for me personally, the most interesting figure is the figure of the rather dissolute Pastor Manders, who experiences his sinfulness very emotionally, which is worth one scene of his sexual act with a painting depicting a naked woman. In general, this story is about lust and morality, about what Ibsen wrote. This is a play about skeletons in the closet that haunt you, about the secrets of the past that result in hereditary sins, suffering and illness. About the fact that nothing passes without a trace. It is precisely about these ghosts and those who have returned that the mother of the family correctly speaks in one key monologue: “This is something outdated, like ghosts, which I just can’t get rid of... all sorts of old outdated concepts, beliefs and the like. All this no longer lives in us, but still sits so firmly that it is impossible to get rid of it.” And, indeed, you will have to answer for everything. And vice is nearby, and who doesn’t have this? And every viewer should definitely feel this.

At the very least, the audience themselves become participants in this show, and it is precisely through this that the ghosts, who bashfully spy on all this and inevitably project what is happening onto their inner experiences, may even be revealed. Such a good psychoanalysis session. Because, really, it’s better to go through it all alone, from beginning to end. This is the only way you can feel everything to the end, maybe understand your ghosts. Try it, experience it for yourself. “The Returned” in Dashkov Lane.
